RESUMEN

Nursing workforce accounts for about 59 percent of health care professionals. Various benefits and barriers associated accrue to the organisations and individuals by investing in nursing. The barriers in investing in nursing include lack of resources, non-cooperation from the management and other health care professionals and lack of quality education. The main objective of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitude of staff nurses regarding the perceived benefits and barriers regarding investing in nursing and correlating them followed by administration of information handout on techniques to improve the delivery by nursing workforce. A quantitative approach, with non-experimental correlational descriptive design was adopted. A sample of 100 staff nurses were selected in selected hospitals through convenient sampling method. The tool used was a structured questionnaire to assess the knowledge and a 4-point Likert scale to assess attitude and perceived barriers and the tool was found to be reliable. The study showed that majority of the staff nurses were 26-30 years old, and female. Most of them were graduates and were working in general and surgical wards with 1-6 years of experience and having re- ceived awards/appreciation at their work place. Majority of them had average knowledge (63%) and positive attitude (68%). The correlation was 0.3 which is weak positive correlation. The most perceived benefit was organisational benefit with a modified mean, and barrier was reluctance of organisation to solve the staff shortage issues by the management. The most perceived benefit was organisational benefit with a modified mean of 0.9. There was no significant association between attitude and demographic variables but there was significant association of knowledge with age and gender. Based on the above, an information handout was developed and adminis- tered which outlined few techniques to improve delivery of services by nursing workforce.

Results: A total of 101 nurses took part and 57% of the participants scored poorly in the knowledge section of the questionnaire. In all 72% had scored poorly when asked regarding complications of diabetic foot ulcers; 49.5% of the nurses had positive attitude towards diabetic foot care; and 79.3% thought that care for diabetic foot ulcer is timeconsuming. Majority of them think that their colleagues are the main source of information. All demographic variables were deemed to be confounders with the knowledge and attitude of nurses towards diabetic foot ulcers and its care. Conclusions: Nurses in this centre had poor knowledge towards diabetic foot ulcers and its care. None of the variable studied were correlated with the level know knowledge. Good or poor knowledge of nurses does not correspond equally to good or poor attitude towards diabetic foot ulcers care. More frequent formal training of diabetic foot care would be needed to ensure better knowledge.

Written consent was taken and pre-defined questionnaire was prepared based on a review of literature on the subject. Scrutiny was done for the data for any logical inconsistencies, skip patterns and missing values. Coding of the data was done and entered into a Microsoft Excel. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied for data analysis. Results: 150 participants took part in the questionnaire based study. The study showed that majority of participants have adequate knowledge, attitude and practice toward biomedical waste management but still, there were gaps in the knowledge and practice in essentially quite a lot of participants which should not be there. Conclusions: There is a need for strict implementation of biomedical rules at all the tiers of healthcare. There should be regular orientation programs for nursing staff and other health personnel working in the institutes.

RESUMEN

Drug administration is an integral part of nurses role in nursing practice. In relation to their diverse roles, nurses are required to have adequate knowledge and good practice. The purpose of this study is to examine the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of nurses in the medical wards administering oral medication and to assess whether nurse’s knowledge, attitude and practice is associated with working experience and professional education (post basic training). A cross-sectional study was conducted on forty (40) nurses working in the Medical wards in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). Questionnaires were used to measure the level of knowledge and attitude of nurses and a direct observation technique with checklist to record the practice of nurses. The mean score for knowledge (13.8), attitude (16.4) and practice (10.7) were all within average distribution. No significant difference was found between knowledge and practice of nurses with working experience and post basic training. However, the influence of working experience on attitude of nurses in serving oral medication was found to be significant (p= 0.045). Nurses in medical ward, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, were found to possess an average level of knowledge and attitude in administering oral medication. In addition, this study suggest that work experience of nurses has no influence on knowledge gain and good practice in administering oral medication.
