(AU)

This article presents the adaptation and validation of the scale Older Workers' Intentions to Continue Working (OWICW) in a sample of older workers from a northeastern Brazilian higher education institution. The study was conducted with 283 federal employees with ages between 48 and 69 years (M = 56.8; SD = 5.1) with an average working time of 34 years (SD = 4.4). The data were submitted to exploratory factor analysis resulting in six factors with a structure similar to five factors of the original study. The psychometrics properties suggest the adequacy of the scale, which can be a useful instrument to the management of older workers who wish to continue working. We suggest further studies with other populations. (AU)

A amostra envolveu 278 estudantes universitários portugueses.

ABSTRACT We seek to understand (a) if the penta-dimensional structure (dimensions: adaptability, value of older people to the organization, conscientiousness and loyalty; capital and generosity; performance) of the measuring instrument of managers' attitudes towards older workers previously developed is replicated in a sample of university students and (b) whether these attitudes help to explain the decisions of students. The sample involved 278 university students. The main results are the following: (a) the penta-dimensional structure obtained with Portuguese and Brazilian managers is replicated in the sample of students; (b) although students recognize qualities in older workers, they tend to reveal discriminatory practices with respect to such employees, and those practices appear to be more pronounced than those observed with managers.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of aged individuals in the Korean workforce continues to increase. This research determined the health and working conditions of Korean older wage workers and confirmed the effects of factors on the health-related quality of life of Korean older workers. METHODS: Of the 25,534 persons surveyed in the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1368 older (>55 years of age) wage workers without missing variables were selected. Their general characteristics, health status (cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disease, and mental health), working conditions (type of occupation, employment status, full- or part-time work, weekly average working hours, and shift work), and health-related quality of life assessed by the EQ-5D questionnaire were examined. RESULTS: The mean values of the EQ-5D index of the male and female older workers were 0.956 +/- 0.087 and 0.917 +/- 0.124, respectively (p < 0.001). The factors that caused statistically significant differences in the EQ-5D index for all subjects were age, education, household income, cerebro-cardiovascular event, osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal pain, stress, occupation type, employment status, and working hours. In logistic regression analysis, the factors that associated with perceived problems in each EQ-5D dimensions were age, musculoskeletal pain, stress, diabetes, smoking, occupation type, employment status, and working hours. CONCLUSIONS: To eventually raise the quality of life of older workers through health maintenance and management, it is necessary to manage related factors that include of musculoskeletal pain and diseases, stress, diabetes, smoking, occupation, employment status, and working hours.

RESUMEN

Aims: The objective of the Study on Transitions in Employment, Ability and Motivation (STREAM) is to acquire knowledge on determinants of transitions in employment and work productivity among persons aged 45-64 years. Research Framework: A research framework was developed, in which transitions in employment (e.g. leaving the workforce, entering the workforce, job change) and work productivity are influenced by the following determinants: health, job characteristics, skills and knowledge, social factors, and financial factors. Central explanatory variables in the framework are the ability to work, the motivation to work, and the opportunity to work. Study Design: STREAM is a prospective cohort study among 12,055 employees, 1,029 self-employed persons, and 2,034 non-working persons, all aged 45 to 64 years at baseline. The study sample was stratified by age and employment status (employed, self-employed, non-working), and was drawn from an existing internet panel. The baseline measurement was carried out in 2010 (response: 70%), and with yearly followup measurements in 2011 (response: 82%), 2012 (response: 80%), and 2013. At each wave, participants fill out an online questionnaire covering all aspects of the research framework. Place and Duration of Study: The Netherlands, between October 2010 and December 2013. Methodology: Quantitative data on all aspects of the research framework were assessed with an online questionnaire, qualitative data were assessed with interview studies, and the questionnaire data can be linked to register data at Statistics Netherlands for 89% of the participants. Results: Transitions in employment between the first three waves of data among the participants are described. Conclusion: STREAM will provide insight in the determinants of healthy and productive labour participation among persons aged 45 years and older, which will support the development of interventions prolonging working life in good health, while maintaining good work productivity.

In recent years many organizations have been forced to accept mergers, downsizing, and layoffs due to economic conditions and financial constraints imposed by global markets. In these organizational contexts, the older workforce, over 50 years of age, is the one that runs the highest risk of becoming the main target of downsizing policies. The principal aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between age and the perception of psychological contract (PC) breach in a sample of 498 employees from the banking sector. Additionally, we analyze the mediating role played by perceived organizational support (POS) in this relationship. The results indicate that employees over 50 years of age perceive more PC breach in comparison with younger workers, although POS can mitigate this perception. Results are discussed in light of possible ageism of these organizational policies and practices, as well as their practical implications.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to identify the attitudes of nutrition majors toward hiring older workers who are over fifty-five years of age. Questionnaires were sent to 500 students who are studying food and nutrition in three colleges and three universities located in Seoul and its suburbs. Data from 490 usable responses were analyzed using the SAS package program. The study showed that although the students have a favorable perception about hiring older workers, they prefer to hire younger people under the age of 30 father than older workers(over 55 year old). Additionally, even though both the younger and older people have the same ability, they would still choose to hire younger people. Also, they think that older workers are harder to train, find it more difficult to adapt to new ways of working and are slower in their work. On the positive side, the response did show that students realize that older workers are not absent from work as frequently as younger workers and that they are more cooperative than younger workers are. The data also showed that the students who had a more positive experience with older workers also perceive those workers in a more positive way than the students who did mot have experience with older workers(p<0.0001). Finally, students who have family members who are older workers(p<0.01) and students who are planning to work past fifty-five years of ages show more positive attitudes toward older workers(p<0.01). Moreover male students showed more positive attitudes toward older workers than female students did(p<0.0001).
