RESUMEN

Objective:We conducted a new physical fitness test and assessed activity and social participation in pediatric cancer survivors who participated in our hospital events and examined its characteristics and issues.Subjects:A total of 30 children aged 5 years or older (median age 9 years, 17 boys, 13 girls) were enrolled in the study. They were chosen from a pool of 44 pediatric cancer survivors who participated in our hospital's long-term follow-up events from August 2018 to August 2019.Methods:Medical records and evaluations performed at the events were examined retrospectively. Survey items included sex, diagnosis, age at evaluation and onset, years since discharge, physical and cognitive functions, new physical fitness test results, and ability to perform basic physical activity. Results:Regardless of the number of years since discharge from the hospital, physical fitness tended to be lower than the national average for both sexes and all ages, with a particular decline in endurance. Twenty-six of the 30 subjects (87%) were able to attend school all day and go out for a day. In addition, 11 (37%) participated in physical activities other than physical education and club activities. Conclusions:Childhood cancer survivors may have a long-term, persistent decline in physical fitness, even if they are able to participate in academic, leisure, and social activities, such as exercise lessons. It is beneficial to provide continuous support for physical fitness during hospitalization and throughout life, as well as to accomplish activities and social participation in accordance with growth.

RESUMEN

Beach volleyball is an intermittent sport composed of moments of intense physical performance due to the rallies, that is, playing time, with small intervals of rest between them. This feature requires players to develop physical qualities such as strength and cardiorespiratory endurance necessary for the correct execution of fundamental technics and the development of offensive/ defensive actions with maximum performance throughout the game. This study aimed to analyze the impact of an intervention program on the neuromotor capacities of muscle strength and cardiorespiratory endurance in beach volleyball athletes. This is a quasi-experimental quantitative study, in which 11 athletes were submitted, before and after intervention, to the following tests: vertical jump; medicine ball throw; 20-meter (Beep) cardiorespiratory endurance. The intervention circuit lasted two months, applying the strength exercises, followed by the endurance exercises with a one-minute rest from one session to the other. It was verified that the neuromotor capacities analyzed in this study obtained significant values (p = 0.0001) in all the tests when compared to the pre-intervention results. It was concluded that the intervention program showed an increase in muscle strength and cardiorespiratory endurance in beach volleyball athletes

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of rhythmic exercise program on perceived health status, depression, life satisfaction and physical strength in elderly. METHOD: A convenience sample of 20 elderly, participated in the study from a community health center located in an urban city, South Korea. SPSS/WIN 17.0 was used for descriptive analysis, paired t-test and Pearson correlation. RESULTS: After 8 weeks exercise program, perceived health status (t=0.48, p<.001), depression (t=-0.93, p=.001), life satisfaction (t=1.01, p=.002 and physical strength (t=1.70, 0.70, 0.72, all p<.001) in elderly were significantly improved. Three were significant correlations between depression and perceived health status (r=-.63, p=.004) and life satisfaction (r=-.70, p=.001). CONCLUSION: Further are warranted to validate the effects of a rhythmic exercise program for the elderly in a larger sample.

RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVES</b>To evaluate the physical strength, cerebral function, and mental health conditions in elderly persons, and to examine the correlation between these functions.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The subjects were 151 independent-living elderly Japanese women, mean age 70 +/-5 years (+/-SD; range, 60 to 80 years), with normal abilities in daily life. The health check-up was conducted from April to May 1997. Physical strength was estimated by measuring seven activities. Cerebral functions were assessed by six sub-tests of the General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB). Their mental health status was measured by four sub-scales of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ)-28.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The physical strenght and almost all of the cerebral functions decreased with age. Social dysfunction and severe depression on the GHQ sub-scales also worsened with age. Physical strength was strongly correlated with cerebral functions after adjusting for the confounding effect of aging. There were also interrelations between physical strength and mental health.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>This study provided important information on the correlation between physical and mental status in elderly women. Future longitudinal studies with the intervention of physical training are required to determine whether a causal relationship exists between these factors.</p>

RESUMEN

The effect of tubal obstruction on sexual behavior and physical strength has been observed in mice. The appearance of vaginal plug was used as an index of coitus and the interval that the mice could swim in the water tank till death as an index of physical strength. There was no significant differences between the operation group and the control group. Besides, the oestrous cycle still appeared regularly in the operation group. It shows that the tubal obstruction may not affect the normal sexual behavior, physical strength and the ovarian function
