RESUMEN

Abstract This study investigated the changes in the ingredients in Fallopia multiflora Thunb. Haraldson (FMT) root after processing it with different methods such as soaking, stewing, and steaming or combined methods. The total polyphenol, 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilben-2-O-ß-D-glucoside (THSG), and physcion contents in FMT products after processing were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) methods. The results demonstrated that the processing method and time significantly affected the contents of polyphenol, THSG, and physcion. The physcion and total polyphenol content increased or decreased during processing depending upon the processing time, while the THSG content gradually decreased with an increase in the processing time. The content of physcion (a substance that can cause liver toxicity) was analysed, and the suitable conditions for processing of the FMT products were determined as initial soaking in rice swill for 24 h and subsequent stewing with black beans and water for 12 h

RESUMEN

This study analyzes the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties of ethanolic leaf extract of Alafia barteri Oliv., Apocynaceae, based on its medicinal use in the treatment of toothaches, inflammation and fevers. The antinociceptive effect was assessed in mice using acetic acid-induced writhing, tail clip, tail immersion and formalin assays. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated on carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats, and xylene-induced ear oedema in mice. In acetic acid-induced writhing test, the extract at different doses (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly (p < 0.05) and dose-dependently reduced pain by 35.04, 56.49 and 84.25%, respectively. The extract also significantly inhibited both the early and late phases of formalin-induced nociception in mice. In the tail immersion test, the extract caused a significant inhibition of pain (34.43% inhibition, after 90 min) at a dose of 200 mg/kg, while the effect of the extract in the tail clip test was only significant at the 100 mg/kg dose. A. barteri caused a significant inhibition of paw oedema development in the carrageenan and xylene-induced oedema tests. There was no mortality recorded following treatment with the extract (5 g/kg, p.o.). The results support the traditional use of A. barteri in the treatment of various diseases associated with pain and inflammation.

Bee pollen has been reported to show antioxidant and radical scavenging activities; contributing to anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective properties. Venezuelan honeybee pollen has been little studied, but is consumed because its properties are known from other countries reports. On the basis of these reports, water, ethanol and methanol soluble fractions were prepared from dried bee-pollen commercially available and produced by La Montaña farm (Mérida, Venezuela). These fractions were evaluated for their functional properties, specifically, polyphenol content and total antioxidant activity. Pollen samples were separated by color in four fractions: yellow, brown, orange and ochre. Polyphenol content ranged between 396.7 to 1286.7 gallic acid equivalents GAE/100 g pollen; it was highest in pollen homogenates obtained with ethanol, followed by those obtained with methanol and water. The antioxidant activity ranged from 0.50 to 1.84 μmoles Trolox equivalents TEAC/100 g for water and ethanol homogenates respectively. The results presented in this work suggest that the ethanol extract of bee pollen show a potent antioxidant activity, comparable to human plasma, probably due to total polyphenol content of bee pollen. This is important because the bee pollen would be beneficial not only as a dietary supplement but also as a functional food.


Actividad antioxidante de polen apícola de Mérida, Venezuela, fraccionado en cuatro colores. Se ha reportado que el polen de las abejas tiene actividad antioxidante y secuestra radicales libres; relacionada con sus propiedades antiinflamatorias y gastroprotectivas. El polen apícola de Venezuela ha sido poco estudiado, pero se consume gracias a las propiedades conocidas por reportes provenientes de otros países. Tomando como base estos reportes, se prepararon fracciones solubles en agua, etanol y metanol del polen apícola seco comercialmente disponible y producido por la Granja La Montaña (Mérida, Venezuela). Estas fracciones fueron evaluadas en cuanto a sus propiedades funcionales, específicamente, contenido de polifenoles y la actividad antioxidante total. Las muestras de polen fueron separadas en cuatro fracciones de acuerdo al color: amarillo, marrón, naranja y ocre. El contenido de polifenoles se encontraba entre 396,7 a 1286,7 equivalentes de ácido gálico EAG/100 g de polen, y fue mayor en los homogenatos obtenidos con etanol, seguido por aquellos obtenidos con metanol y agua. La actividad antioxidante varió entre 0.50 a 1.84 μmoles equivalentes de Trolox TEAC/100 g par los homogenatos de agua y etanol respectivamente. Los resultados presentados en este trabajo sugieren los extractos de etanol de polen de abejas presentan una potente actividad antioxidante, comparable al plasma humano, probablemente debida a su contenido total de polifenoles. Esto es importante ya que el polen de abejas podría servir no solo como un suplemento alimenticio sino como una alimento funcional.

Buddleja globosa Hope (matico) is a medicinal shrub native to Chile whose leaves have been traditionally used for wound and ulcer healing, pathologies associated to oxidative stress. Matico leaves display a high content of polyphenols, compounds with recognized antioxidant capacity, which may contribute to its therapeutic properties. Several factors, however, can modify the polyphenol content of matico leaf extracts, including plant material, production techniques, provenances, leaf age, harvest time, irrigation, and desiccation procedures. Thus, standardized leaf extracts prepared with plants from different provenances and harvest conditions were compared in terms of polyphenol content and their protecting antioxidant effects on rat liver microsomal lipids and thiol groups. All factors tested, but irrigation, changed both polyphenol content and antioxidant properties of matico extracts; water stress only affected their antioxidant properties without changing their polyphenol content. Correlation between polyphenol content and lipid peroxidation inhibition was only significant in the provenance study.


Buddleja globosa Hope (matico) es un arbusto medicinal nativo de Chile cuyas hojas han sido utilizadas en la medicina tradicional como cicatrizante en caso de patologías relacionadas con el estrés oxidativo. Las hojas tienen un alto contenido de polifenoles, compuestos con reconocidos efectos antioxidantes relacionados con la inhibición de la lipoperoxidación. Varios factores pueden afectar a su contenido, entre ellos el origen de la planta, edad de la hoja, momento de cosecha, riego y métodos de secado. En extractos estandarizados preparados de hojas de diferentes tratamientos se compararon el contenido de polifenoles y los efectos antioxidantes protectores de lipidos y grupos tioles microsomales. Todos los ensayos de cultivo y postcosecha mostraron diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos, excepto para la inhibición de lipoperoxidación en el tratamiento de riego. Plantas de diferente origen muestran que el contenido de polifenoles en las hojas es determinado genéticamente y sufre variaciones por efectos ambientales.

It has been being some studies on biomedical effects of mulberry leaves in the world. Mulberry trees are widly cultivated in VietNam to take leaves for fed of silkworm. However, there were few studies on extraction, determination and antioxidation of mulberry leaves in VietNam. Objectives: extraction and determination of polyphenol from mulberry leaves. Evaluation of antioxidant capacities of mulberry leaf extract powders. Methods: Mulberry leaf extract powder were extracted from mulberry leaves by five solvens: methanol 100%, methanol 75%, n-hexan 100%, ethylacetat 100%. Polyphenol concentration of the extracts are determined by ferrous sulphate and follin reagent assay. Antioxidant capacities of the powders are based on peroxidation of linoleic acid at 40oC. Results: Among five solvens, the extract by methanol 75% from 50g dried leaves is best. The powder is 1.94g with 2.62% of polyphenol. Polyphenol concentraion of the extract powders are determined by two methods: ferrous sulphate and follin reagent. The result with ferrous sulphate method is more accurate than follin reagent method. The mulberry leave extract powders inhibited linoleic acid peroxidation at the 1h and 12h of reaction (only 15.5% to 42.2% linoleic acid peroxidated) in comparison with control (100% linoleic acid peroxidated). Conclusions: Polyphenol from mulberry leaves was extracted by some solvens. Among them extraction of polyphenol by methanol 75% is best. Polyphenol concentration of extract powders can be dedermined by ferrous sulphat. The extract powders from mulberry leaves exhibited antioxidant capacities in vitro. The extract powder by methanol 75% showed highest antioxidant capacitiy.

The diabetic patients are usually suffered from oxidation stress. Green tea is one of the good herbal medicines has been used for treatment of some diseases. Objectives: Evaluate change of antioxidant status in blood and effect of the green tea polyphenol on this change in the experimental diabetic rats. Methods: Using in vivo model to investigate some biological indicators in STZ - induced diabetic rats fed with high fat diet and to evaluate effect of the green tea polyphenol on the changes of these indicators. Results: Erythrocyte GPx activity and serum MDA concentration in STZ - induced diabetic rats was higher than that of normal and lipid metabolism disorder groups (p < 0.001) and effected of the green tea polyphenol. However, no change in erythrocyte SOD activity and plasma TAS level was observed. Conclusions: Green tea polyphenol improved blood antioxidant status in STZ - induced diabetic rats.
