RESUMEN

Proliferative fasciitis is a pseudo-sarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferation characterized by the presence of unusual giant cells resembling ganglion cells, which usually occurs in the adult population with a mean age of 54 years. It usually affects the upper extremities and is rare in head and neck region with only 11 cases described in the literature so far. Because of rapid growth and histological similarity to various malignant tumors such as rhabdomyosarcoma, recognition of this benign condition is a matter of utmost importance when a pathologist is concerned. In this study, we report a case of a 11-year-old boy presented with a lesion on the right side of chin, along with a literature review involving those cases reported in the head and neck region.

RESUMEN

Proliferative fasciitis is a rare, rapidly growing, pseudosarcomatous nodule of subcutaneous tissue. It commonly occurs on the extremities. Lesions on the head and neck are exceedingly rare. Histopathologically, it is characterized by several large basophilic ganglion-like cells deposited in a myxoid stroma with spindled cells. Herein, we report a case of a 54-year-old man who noticed a nodule on his right cheek about six months before examination. At first, its size abruptly increased, and then remained without any change in size. Microscopically, many basophilic ganglion-like cells and spindled cells were deposited in a myxoid stroma. Immunohistochemically, ganglion-like cells and spindled cells were strongly positive for vimentin and weakly positive for smooth muscle actin and CD68. Although it was not radically excised, the lesion has not been found for 3 months.

RESUMEN

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an easy convenient non-invasive method in the diagnosis of superficial palpable masses. The cytologic findings by FNAC of reactive and neoplastic lesions in various organs including breast, lymph node, thyroid, salivary gland, etc., have been described, but, those of soft tissue lesions including proliferative fasciitis are relatively rare to find. We recently experienced a case of FNAC of proliferative fasciitis in the left back of a 72-year-old male. The FNAC smears were scant in cellularity and contained large cells with abundant basophilic cytoplasm, one to two nuclei lying at the periphery, and prominent nucleoli that resemble ganglion cells.

RESUMEN

We present the cytologic features of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the liver metastasized from the uterine cervix. Cytologically, tumor cells were arranged in a pat- tern of solid sheet in necrotic background. The tumor cells were characterized by uniform, small cells, round hyperchromatic nuclei, and high nuclear cytoplasmic ratio. The smears showed frequent mitotic figures and rosette formation, These findings were identified with the previous histologic sections of uterine cervix. To make a diagnosis of metastatic small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma on the Papanicolaou smear, a high index of suspicion and careful review of clinical history are needed
