RESUMEN

PURPOSE@#The disparity between conducting research and putting it into practice has remains a global healthcare issue, with less than 50% of nurses utilizing research. This study aims to determine the level and relationship between Evidence-based practice (EBP) competency, current EBP beliefs and research utilization among nurses.@*DESIGN AND METHOD@#This quantitative study utilized a descriptive-correlational design and mediation analysis. A purposive sampling was used to select six Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) hospitals. Simple random sampling was used to recruit 544 nurses from the six CHAG hospitals. The study utilized mean and standard deviation, Pearson Correlation, ANOVA, and GLS mediation analysis. The researcher obtained ethical approval from the Saint Louis University Research Ethics committee and, the institutional review board of the CHAG.@*FINDINGS@#The results showed that nurses had a low level of EBP competency (M=2.27, SD= 0.255), strong positive EBP beliefs (M=2.58, SD=0.322) and low research utilization (M=2.57, SD=0.300). There was a moderately significant positive relationship between EBP competency and research utilization (r= .431, p= .000), EBP competency and EBP beliefs (r= .327, p= .000) and EBP beliefs and research utilization (r= .306, p= .000). There is no significant difference in terms of EBP competency and research utilization when EBP training attendance was considered. Nurses with 1-2 years of experience had a higher level of EBP competency. Theatre nurses had a higher level of EBP competency, however, emergency nurses had a lower level of research utilization than nurses in the surgical unit. EBP beliefs mediated the relationship (B= 0.0604, z= 3.99, p < .001) between EBP competency and research utilization.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Nurses in CHAG hospitals have a limited ability to implement the EBP process. The respondent perceived the value of EBP in nursing practice to be significant and has the confidence to implement the EBP process. The nurses' respondents use of research in nursing practice is limited due to the organizational barriers in CHAG institutions in Ghana. Based on the findings, it is recommended for nurse administrators and policy makers to prioritize the provision of adequate resources, support, EBP policies and targeted training programs to facilitate a culture of evidence-based practice and research utilization in CHAG institutions. By improving EBP competency and promoting research utilization, nurses can enhance the quality and safety of patient care.

Abstract Evidence-informed policies can produce social and economic impacts and equity and health benefits. Interaction between researchers in politics depends on the interests of social stakeholders and favorable political environments. This paper seeks to understand the meanings and researchers' perspectives of interaction processes between scientists and decision-makers that would influence the research impact on the health policy. This is a qualitative content analysis study conducted in 2014 to identify the core meanings and relationships between research and politics. The paper builds on the RAPID program approach of the Overseas Development Institute. Fourteen researchers who conducted maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality studies sponsored by the Health Ministry were interviewed. Researchers focused on the production of knowledge, strengthening of research capacities and dissemination of results. On some occasions, researchers also participated in the definition of clinical care policies and performance of health services. They pointed to barriers to interact and produce an impact on politics due to tensions in the political, economic and social context, as well as to institutional and organizational changes in the health sector and to the academic evaluation system.

RESUMEN

@#
Nursing science needs to adopt a paradigm that can be used to apply its knowledge. Notably, how nursing science is applied in nursing practice or education remains confusing. This article aims to discuss the pros and cons of the two ways to implement nursing science, that is, evidence-based practice (including translational research and research utilization) and intuitive nursing. Also, I differentiated evidence-based practice (EBP), translational research (TR), and research utilization (RU). I argued that EBP as the paradigm of choice will be the optimal strategy for the future of nursing science. Adopting EBP improves patient, organizational, and staffing outcomes. While basing clinical decisions on intuition alone may imperil patient's safety due to multiple cognitive biases inherent in our intellectual devices. Combining EBP, TR, RU, and intuitive nursing resulted in a model Consilience in Evidence-based Practice. Implications of the model for nursing practice, education, and research were also discussed.

RESUMEN

The present study is a descriptive study to investigate nurses'perception of barriers to research utilization. A total of 274 participants in this study consisted of registered nurses working in a large, urban and academic medical center. A questionnaire packet containing the Barriers Scale, and a demographic profile was distributed to nurses and they were asked to return the packet to a return-box in the Nursing Office after completion. The greatest barrier was insufficient time on the job to implement new ideas. Next was `implications for practice are not made clear'. Also the item of the English language in research articles was considered to be the ninth barrier. The greatest mean score of each of the sub-scales was the communication factor. The were followed by the organization, research, and nurse factors. Compared with the means from other studies, the mean scores of the communication and research factors were higher in this study. Nurses who had not taken a class of research methods found the communication and research factors as a higher barrier than those who did. Also, nurses who did not participate in a conference last year perceived the research factor as higher than those who did. It is recommended that English and research classes should be strengthened in educational nursing programs. The researchers should also describe the section of implication for practice as more detail and clearer for the understanding of nurses; Lastly journals in a libraries or online journal systems should be easily accessible.
