RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the long-term outcomes of modified transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy in a large cohort of patients affected by primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Methods: This study, conducted from January 17 to June 2022, encompassed 141 patients (159 procedures) who underwent modified transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy (MT-DCR). The procedure employed an 810-nm diode laser. Patients were monitored for at least a year after the intervention. Anatomical success was determined by ostium patency upon irrigation, while functional success referred to epiphora resolution. Parameters studied included patient demographics, procedure duration, complications, and both anatomical and functional success. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, with results considered significant at a 95% confidence interval (p≤0.05). Results: A total of 159 lacrimal drainage systems (141 patients: 112 women and 29 men) were included in this study. Among them, 18 underwent bilateral procedures. The average patient age was 58 years (range: 34-91 years), and the average surgical duration was 24 minutes (range: 18-35 minutes). One year after the surgery, MT-DCR exhibited anatomical and functional success rates of 84.9% (135/159) and 83% (132/159), respectively. Conclusion: MT-DCR achieved an anatomical success rate of 84.9%, reflecting an excellent outcome. However, further extensive studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are necessary to substantiate these findings.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Periodontitis is an inflammatory clinical condition caused by dysbiotic biofilm that results in progressive destruction of periodontal attachment and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of high-power diode laser as an adjunct to mechanical instrumentation in periodontal pockets of a patient with generalized, stage III, grade C periodontitis. Methods: 126 sites of a patient were examined at the Clinical Research Laboratory (LabClin) of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), where the parameters of probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL) and bleeding on probing (BoP) were evaluated at the beginning of the study and after 3 and 6 months of basic therapy. All sites received non-surgical periodontal treatment which corresponds to scaling and root planing (SRP) and coronary polishing. The deep periodontal pockets with PD ≥ 5 mm, received the adjuvant therapy with diode laser light. Results: There was a significant improvement of periodontal parameters of PD, CAL and BoP in all treated sites. In those with PD ≥ 5 mm, the results were similar, with statistically significant reduction of PD, CAL and BoP before and after treatment. After 6 months, all periodontal pockets with PD ≥ 5mm were reduced to values lower than 3. Conclusion: The irradiation of deep pockets with high-power diode laser proved to be effective as adjuvant therapy to SRP in patients with generalized, stage III, degree C periodontitis.

RESUMEN

Introduction. Over time, efforts have been invested in the design of new instruments that overcome the disadvantages of the gold standard instrument in surgery, the scalpel. As a result, electronic equipment has emerged such as the electric scalpel and laser devices. The available evidence on these instruments suggests that the tissue response is related to each instrument's physical and biological cutting principles. Objective. To compare the histological changes in gingiva samples associated with surgical cutting performed with a 940 nm diode laser, a 2780 nm erbium, chromium: yttriumscandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser, and an electric scalpel, by presenting a series of cases. Case presentation. We present three cases of healthy patients undergoing cosmetic surgery. The clinical examination revealed exposure of a keratinized gingiva band greater than 4 mm, normal color and texture in gingival tissue, with a firm consistency and no bleeding on periodontal probing. Gingivectomy was indicated with the following protocols: Diode laser of 940 nm at 1 W, in continuous mode; Er,Cr:YSGG laser of 2780 nm at 2.5 W, 75 Hz, H mode, air 20, water 40, gold tip MT4); and electric scalpel in cutting mode at power level four. Gingival tissue samples were taken and stored in 10% formaldehyde for histological analysis. Conclusion. All the evaluated cutting instruments generated histological changes produced by the thermal effect, the main ones being collagen coagulation and carbonization. The depth of thermal damage caused by the 2780 nm Er,Cr:YSGG laser was much lesser than that induced by the electric scalpel and the 940 nm diode laser.

This paper focuses on the current state of the semiconductor industry at the global level as well as in India. With semiconductor chips emerging as the new gold, its demand is highest now than it was ever before. The demand for semiconductor chips in India is said to reach a gure of whopping US 110 billion dollars by 2030. In recent years, this industry has witnessed a crunch in its supply due to supply-side and demand-side constraints. This paper sheds light on the causes of these limits. Moreover, many countries are acquainted with this industry's scope in the future. India recognizes its dependence on countries like China for semiconductors. So, it aims to become a manufacturing hub for this industry and not just remain a fabless industry. However, India is encountering hurdles in this process. With this perception, this study has tried to explore India's initiatives in this direction. Keeping in mind India's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, it seems like it's a long and rough road ahead to make the semiconductor industry in India, a self-reliant industry. This analytical study infers that overcoming these obstacles is going to become increasingly onerous.

RESUMEN

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the morphology, proliferation, and differentiation of gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) irradiated with a 970 nm Diode Laser (LLLT). It is essential to validate the efficacy of treatment, optimize irradiation conditions and guarantee the safety and quality of stem cells for future use in dental applications. Materials and Methods: GMSCs were cultured in standard conditions and irradiated with a Diode laser (970 nm, 0.5W) with an energy density of 9J/cm2. Cell proliferation was assessed with the WST-1 proliferation kit. GMSCs were differentiated into chondrogenic and osteogenic lineages. Cell morphology was performed with Hematoxylin/eosin staining, and quantitative nuclear analysis was done. Cell viability was monitored with trypan blue testing. Results: GMSCs subjected to irradiation demonstrated a significant increase in proliferation at 72 hours compared to the non-irradiated controls (p=0.027). This indicates that the 970 nm diode laser has a stimulatory effect on the proliferation of GMSCs. LLLT-stimulated GMSCs exhibited the ability to differentiate into chondrogenic and osteogenic lineages. A substantial decrease in cell viability was observed 24 hours after irradiation (p=0.024). However, after 48 hours, the cell viability recovered without any significant differences. This indicates that there might be a temporary negative impact on cell viability immediately following irradiation, but the cells were able to recover and regain their viability over time. Conclusions: This study support that irradiation with a 970 nm diode laser could stimulate the proliferation of GMSCs, maintain their ability to differentiate into chondrogenic and osteogenic lineages, and has minimal impact on the mor- phological characteristics of the cells. These results support the potential use of NIR Lasers in combination with GMSCs as a promising strategy for dental treatments.

Quantum Dots (QDs) are ultra-fine nanometer-sized semiconductor particles with a core-shell structure possess both electrical and optical properties. Their unique ability to emit pure, monochromatic light on being exposed to light makes them extremely versatile in their applications. The color of the light emitted directly depends on their size and shape. Smaller QDs emit shorter wavelengths, closer to the violet end of the visible light spectrum (~380-450 nm), while larger QDs emit longer wavelengths i.e in reddish spectrum (~620-750 nm). Owing to their “tunability”, QDs can be exploited in a wide range of fluorescent, photonic, and electrochemical applications. QDs represent elements mainly from Group II-VI (e.g., CdSe) or Group III-V (e.g., InP) with the resultant optical and electronic properties of the quantum dots being somewhere between bulk semiconductor material and individual atoms or molecules. Besides applications in energy and photonics, they are under extensive investigation and development for use in disease diagnosis and therapy, specifically in the area of controlled drug delivery, biosensing and imaging. This review surveys the progress of research explores their properties, synthesis, applications, delivery systems in biology, and their toxicity

RESUMEN

Aim: The present study aimed to asses enamel microhardness after office bleaching with diode laser and LED light compared to the conventional bleaching procedure. Methods: Thirty-nine human premolar teeth were collected and randomly divided into three groups regarding of the bleaching technique. Group 1: Snow O bleaching gel with LED light-curing unit; Group 2: Snow L bleaching gel with diode laser irradiation; and Group 3: Opalescence Boost bleaching gel with no light source in group 3. Enamel surface changes were evaluated in one tooth in each study group and one intact tooth as a reference under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the remaining samples (n=12), enamel microhardness was determined by Vickers microhardness test before and after bleaching. Data were analyzed with repeated-measures ANOVA to compare microhardness changes, followed by post hoc Tukey tests at the 0.05 significance level. Results: Enamel microhardness decreased in all the groups after bleaching, with the maximum decrease in microhardness in the Snow O bleaching group with LED light, which was significantly higher than the other groups (P=0.002). The two other groups did not exhibit any significant difference in microhardness decrease (P>0.05). Conclusion:Based on the limitations of this study, it can be concluded power bleaching with 980nm diode laser was less time-consuming compare to conventional bleaching procedure and yielded better outcomes in terms of enamel surface microhardness compared to the use of an LED light-curing unit

RESUMEN

The unique characteristics of 2-dimensional hetero structure offers efficient gas sensing with high selectivity to identify gases from the interference gases which is quite difficult. In the present work, ZnO: SnO2Nano composite clusters (NCC) is prepared. A resistive metal oxide volatile organic compound (VOC) gas sensor is fabricated with nullifying the effect of humidity by increasing temperature optimally. A single-step SOL-GEL (SG) synthesis is used to prepare ZnO: SnO2 NCC with maximum Zn/Sn molar concentration ratio of 3. The morphological studies through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), electrical properties due to oxygen vacancies and energy band variations of Nanocomposite are measured. The enhancement of gas sensor sensitivity due to highly mesoporous nature of the composite is observed. From the findings, the abundant mesopores in the range of 2 nm-14 nm and specific surface area of 54.2 m2 g?1 with the average crystal size of 14.236 nm, and polar surface area of the composite 25.9651Åis achieved. When compared to bare ZnO and SnO2 gas sensors, the present gas sensor offers the higher selectivity with enhanced performance due to the mesoporous structure. Fast repeatability rate of 2200 sec at 350?C to ethanol is attained and the overall selectivity of the sensor increased twice as 2.085. The NCC compound is tested firstly with micro organisms such as B. subtilis (B. S), Bacillus cereus (B. C), B. coagulans (B. C), Pseudonymous auriginosa (P. A) are considered for antimicrobial activity. From the findings, zinc stannate compound showed good efficacy towards B. cereus Gram positive and P.A gram-negative. A bacterial growth is arrested highly with B. cereus.

RESUMEN

Objective:To investigate the clinical efficacy of low-energy laser in the treatment of erosive oral lichen planus (OLP) and its effect on patients' pain.Methods:Eighty-six patients with erosive OLP who were treated in Shanxian Central Hospital from February 2018 to January 2020 were included in this study. They were randomly divided into control and observation groups ( n = 43/group). The control group was treated by local injection of dexamethasone, and the observation group was treated with semiconductor low-energy laser irradiation. All patients were treated for 8 weeks. Pain scores and physical sign score before and after treatment were evaluated in each group. Therapeutic effects were compared between the two groups. Area of lesion was measured in each group. Recurrence of erosive OLP was calculated at 3 and 6 months after surgery. Results:Before treatment, there were no significant differences in visual analogue scale (VAS) score and physical sign score between the two groups (both P > 0.05). At 7, 14, 28 and 56 days after treatment, VAS score and physical sign score were significantly decreased in each group compared with those before treatment, and VAS score and physical sign score in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (all P < 0.05). Total response rate in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group [93.02% (40/43) vs. 83.72% (36/43), χ2 = 1.81, P > 0.05). Before and 1 month after treatment, there was no significant difference in area of lesion between control and observation groups (both P > 0.05). At 3 and 6 months after surgery, area of lesion in the observation group was (0.31 ± 0.14) cm 2 and (0.32 ± 0.12) cm 2, respectively, which were significantly smaller than those in the control group [(0.42 ± 0.18) cm 2, (0.48 ± 0.19) cm 2, t = 3.16, 4.67, both P < 0.05). At 3 and 6 months after treatment, recurrence of erosive OLP in the observation group was 2.33% (1/43) and 13.95% (6/43), respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the control group [13.95% (6/43), 37.21% (16/43), χ2 = 3.89, 6.11, both P < 0.05]. Conclusion:There is no significant difference in the short-term efficacy of low-energy laser versus conventional corticosteroids in the treatment of erosive OLP. However, low-energy laser has a more obvious short-term pain relief effect than conventional corticosteroids. It can accelerate the healing of injured tissue and decrease the recurrence rate of erosive OLP.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness in intraocular pressure reduction and safety of micropulse transscleral diode cyclophotocoagulation in refractory glaucoma. Methods: We prospectively evaluated a case series of 21 eyes of 21 consecutive patients with refractory glaucoma treated with micropulse transscleral diode cyclophotocoagulation at 12-month follow-up. The total treatment time was at the discretion of the surgeon, considering baseline and target intraocular pressure and glaucoma diagnosis. Intraocular pressure, inflammation, visual acuity, and number of medications were monitored. Success was defined as intraocular pressure between 6 and 21 mmHg and/or 30% reduction from baseline intraocular pressure with or without the use of antiglaucoma medications. Visual acuity loss was defined as a loss of ≥2 lines of vision on the Snellen chart or a ≥2-level decrease in visual function in patients with nonmeasurable chart acuity. Results: The mean age was 61.04 ± 12.99 years, and 11 (52.4%) patients were male, with most (95%) patients showing low visual acuity at baseline (count fingers or worse). The mean intraocular pressure was 33.38 ± 15.95 mmHg, and the mean number of medications was 3.5 ± 1.1 at baseline. After 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, 76.19%, 57.14%, 55.56%, and 66.67%, respectively, of the patients were classified as treatment successes. Seven (33.3%) patients required new laser treatment and were considered treatment failures. The mean intraocular pressure reduction was 44.72% ± 29.72% in the first week and 41.59% ± 18.93% at the end of follow-up (p=0.006). The mean number of medications significantly dropped to 2.00 ± 1.7 at the 12-month visit (p=0.044). Complications included hypotony (4.8%), intraocular inflammation after 1 month (19%), and visual acuity loss (4.8%). Conclusions: Micropulse transscleral diode cyclophotocoagulation was safe and effective for reducing intraocular pressure in eyes with refractory and advanced glaucoma, with reduced need for ocular antihypertensive medication.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Diode lasers are the gold standard for removing unwanted hair. Lowering the energy should result in less pain and could theoretically affect therapeutic efficacy. This study evaluated the efficacy of an 808-nm diode laser at different fluences for permanent axillary hair removal in Korean women. METHODS: Twenty-four Korean women were divided into two groups. Each patient received laser treatment at both axillae, which were divided into upper and lower parts. Each part received different fluence from an HR808 prototype diode at 1-month intervals: 8, 10, 12, and 14 J/cm². Hair count and thickness were recorded at each follow-up visit and at a 3-month follow-up after the final laser treatment by photography and using a folliscope. At the final visit, pain and patient satisfaction were surveyed. Three plastic surgeons assessed the results on photographs. RESULTS: The mean hair follicle density reduction was 62.18%, 65.28%, 73.08%, and 78.29% on the right upper side, right lower side, left upper side, and left lower side, respectively. The mean hair follicle thickness reduction was 45%, 48%, 54%, and 59% on the right upper side, right lower side, left upper side, and left lower side, respectively. In the plastic surgeons' assessment, the left upper and lower sides scored 2.71. The right upper and lower sides scored 2.38 and 2.04, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: High-fluence (14 J/cm²) treatment with an HR 808 prototype diode laser efficiently removed unwanted hair. No significant difference in comfort was reported compared to the low-fluence mode (8–10 J/cm²).

RESUMEN

Objective@#To compare the clinical efficacy and patient satisfaction of 755 nm semiconductor laser for hair removal during different stages of auricular reconstruction.@*Methods@#From July 2016 to September 2018, 86 patients who had ear reconstruction underwent 755 nm semiconductor laser for auricle hair removal in plastic surgery department of Tongji hospital affiliated to Tongji medical college of Huazhong university of science and technology. There were 39 males and 47 females with an average age 12 years old(from 6 to 28 years old). 28 cases were left ear, 58 cases were right ear. With random grouping, 40 patients underwent auricle hair removal treatment after posterior ear tissue expander implantation (post-operation of stage Ⅰ depilation group) and 46 patients underwent treatment after auricular reconstruction (post-operation of stage Ⅱ depilation group). Auricle hair removal treatments(pulse width 10-20 ms, wave length 755 nm, spot size 10 mm×15 mm, energy density 4-8 J/cm2) were respectively started at different intervention time. Each treatment time were 5-10 minutes. The end of the treatment was slight redness or edema of the local hairy follicle. The treatment was repeated every 4 weeks with a total of 5 times. The number of adverse reactions was recorded as while as the hair density, hair clearance rate and patient satisfaction before treatment and 6 months after the 5th depilation.@*Results@#Patients in both groups successfully were completed the treatment and were followed up to about 6 months (23 to 25 weeks) after the last depilation treatment. There were only 2 cases with scratch in skin preparation and 2 cases with blisters in the postoperative of stage Ⅱ group. None of the other patients had adverse reactions. Hair density after treatment (27.63±7.75 bar/cm2) was less than before treatment (84.55±13.68 bar/cm2) in post-operation of stage Ⅰ depilation group. Hair density after treatment was 40.52±5.92 bar/cm2 in post-operation of stage Ⅱ depilation group, less than before treatment (74.78±11.19 bar/cm2). The differences were statistically significant (both P<0.001). After hair removal, the hair density of post-treatment in the post-operation of stage Ⅰ depilation group was less than the post-operation of stage Ⅱ depilation group. The difference was statistically significant (P=0.000). The hair clearance rate of the post-operation of stage Ⅰ (67.32%) was higher than the post-operation of stage Ⅱ(45.81%). The difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). Patients’ satisfaction was 87.5% in the post-operation of stage Ⅰ and 69.5% in the post-operation of stage Ⅱ. The former was superior to the latter.@*Conclusions@#Auricle hair removal with semiconductor 755 nm laserstarted at stage Ⅰ that posterior ear tissue expander was implanted has more favorable clinical efficacy, and higher patient’s satisfaction rate.

RESUMEN

Objective To evaluate the dosimetric characteristics of the TomoDose diode and its application in detecting the couch velocity and assessing the beam Profile stability for convenient and efficient quality control of Tomotherapy. Methods Fundamental properties of the TomoDose detector, such as dose linearity, dose per pulse dependence, directional dependence and field size dependence were tested by the water-equivalent phantom and the results were statistically compared with those measured by the ion-chamber (0.057 cm3,A 1SL).Five different couch velocities with a time interval of 0.0005 s were designed to test the sensitivity of TomoDose for detecting the couch velocity, and then the clinical data of 7 patients with different couch velocities were selected to verify the test accuracy. The beam profile of three different jaws of 1.0,2.5 and 5.0 cm were measured using TomoDose with water-equivalent phantom in the x and y directions under the same conditions as water tank with an underwater depth of 15,50,100,150 and 200 mm,respectively. The Profile data obtained by water tank and TomoDose were evaluated using the Gamma (γ) evaluation method with the 2%/1 mm criterion. Results The dose linearity of the TomoDose and ion chamber was in a linear pattern within the beam-on-time ≤ 30 s.The difference between the TomoDose and ion chamber was less than 2% for the dose per pulse dependence, and the response trends of them were consistent.TomoDose showed angular response dependence with a maximum difference of 2.53% for the gantry angle of ±60°.For the field size dependence, the response difference between the TomoDose and ion chamber was increased with the decreasing field size when the Jaw was 5.0 cm,and the maximum deviation was 0.78% when the field size was 5.0 cm×2.5 cm.TomoDose could detect the couch distance error of 0.5 mm,and determine the couch velocity deviation of< 0.6%.For the Profile stability testing:In the x direction, there was always γ<1 at the underwater depth of 15 mm for all values of Jaw;when the underwater depth was not 15 mm,there was always γ< 1 in the main beam region (off-axis distance< 200 mm),whereas in the penumbra region (off-axis distance> 200 mm),the value of γ was larger and even with γ> l.In the y direction, all comparison results of Profile under three field width demonstrated that γ index was larger on the edge of beam, whereas γ<1 was found in all cases. Conclusions TomoDose is suitable f or the quality control of Tomotherapy, which can accurately measure the couch velocity, precisely monitor the stability of beam Profile of Tomotherapy and complete the quality control process in a convenient and efficient manner.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to describe the types of diseases that developed in semiconductor workers who have registered with the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service (KWCWS) and to identify potential common occupational characteristics by the type of claimed disease. METHODS: A total of 55 semiconductor workers with cancer or rare diseases who claimed to the KWCWS were compared based on their work characteristics and types of claimed diseases. Leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and aplastic anemia were grouped into lymphohematopoietic (LHP) disorder. RESULTS: Leukemia (n = 14) and breast cancer (n = 10) were the most common complaints, followed by brain cancer (n = 6), aplastic anemia (n = 6), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 4). LHP disorders (n = 24) accounted for 43%. Sixty percent (n = 33) of registered workers (n = 55) were found to have been employed before 2000. Seventy-six percent (n = 42) of registered workers and 79% (n = 19) among the registered workers with LHP (n = 24) were found to be diagnosed at a relatively young age, ≤40 years. A total of 18 workers among the registered semiconductor workers were finally determined to deserve compensation for occupational disease by either the KWCWS (n = 10) or the administrative court (n = 8). Eleven fabrication workers who were compensated responded as having handled wafers smaller than eight inches in size. Eight among the 18 workers compensated (44 %) were found to have ever worked at etching operations. CONCLUSION: The distribution of cancer and rare diseases among registered semiconductor workers was closely related to the manufacturing era before 2005, ≤8 inches of wafer size handled, exposure to clean rooms of fabrication and chip assembly operations, and etching operations.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The photolithography process in the semiconductor industry uses various chemicals with little information on their constitution. This study aimed to identify the chemical constituents of photoresist (PR) products and their by-products and to compare these constituents with material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and analytical results. METHODS: A total of 51 PRs with 48 MSDSs were collected. Analysis consisted of two parts: First, the constituents of the chemical products were identified and analyzed using MSDS data; second, for verification of the by-products of PR, volatile organic compounds were analyzed. The chemical constituents were categorized according to hazards. RESULTS: Forty-five of 48 products contained trade secrets in amounts ranging from 1 to 65%. A total of 238 ingredients with multiple counting (35 ingredients without multiple counting) were identified in the MSDS data, and 48.7% of ingredients were labeled as trade secrets under the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Act. The concordance rate between the MSDS data and the analytical result was 41.7%. The by-product analysis identified 129 chemicals classified according to Chemical Abstracts Service No., with 17 chemicals that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic substances. Formaldehyde was found to be released from 12 of 21 products that use novolak resin. CONCLUSION: We confirmed that several PRs contain carcinogens, and some were not specified in the toxicological information in the MSDS. Hazardous chemicals, including benzene and formaldehyde, are released from PRs products as by-products. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a systematic management system for chemical compounds and the working environment.
