RESUMEN

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of Lea symbols (LS) chart and Sheridan Gardiner (SG) chart for vision screening among preschool children, in a semi-urban district of South India. Methods: Vision screening was conducted among 260 preschool children aged 3–5 years in cluster sampled kindergartens using LS chart and SG chart. Pass/fail scores and time taken for visual acuity (VA) estimation were compared. VA scores and time taken were compared using unpaired t-test. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were compared between the charts. Results: There was a significant difference between LS and SG charts in the VA score in both the eyes (P = 0.04). LS showed 76.09% pass score and 23.90% fail score, whereas SG showed 87.65% pass score and 12.35% fail score with a cutoff value of > 0.3 log MAR. Time for screening using LS was higher, when compared to SG, both for the right eyes (P < 0.001) and the left eyes (P < 0.001). The sensitivity of the LS was 94.74% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 70.13%–81.06%) and that of SG was 52.63% (95% CI: 45.29%–59.8%). The specificity of LS was 66.67% (95% CI: 90.26%–97.30%) and SG was 83.33% (95% CI: 70.12%–91.30%). Conclusion: LS chart showed better sensitivity and negative predictive value when compared to SG chart. However, SG chart showed better specificity and positive predictive value, and screening was less time-consuming. Considering the high sensitivity and negative predictive value, LS is the preferred tool, when compared to SG chart in preschool vision screening in our population.

RESUMEN

This paper deals with Sheridan‟s play The Critic which was produced on October 30th, 1779. My objective is to explore the attitude of the unblushing advertising agent, Mr. Puff, one of the stock characters presented by Sheridan in this play. The paper would discuss the shrewd comments delivered by Sheridan, on the noble art of „puffing‟, whose modern version is called „advertising‟. Sheridan uses Mr. Puff to satirize the means by which the skills of the playwright are marketed in the world outside the theatre specifically in the world of advertising. Mr. Puff‟s swindling is strikingly in tune with some modern advertising practices. He catalogues four principles of his profession: the puff direct, the puff collateral, the puff collusive and the puff oblique, all of which involve some form of misrepresentation. The paper points out that a similar form of misrepresentation is a common scenario of the modern advertising world. The paper indulges in a comparative study between the eighteenth century and the modern trends among advertisers, based on certain authentic examples from both these periods. It further discusses the methods used by these advertisers to somehow affect the subconscious mind of the customers and mislead them.

RESUMEN

Vitis hybrid (Sheridan)-Robus coreanus red wine was vinified by fermentation of a mixture of Vitis hybrid and Robus coreanus must at 25degrees C for 10 days. The Vitis hybrid-Robus coreanus red wine had ethanol contents of 10.9%. It had high antihypertensive angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of 57.8% and antioxidant activity of 64.8%. Changes in the physicochemical properties and functionality of the Vitis hybrid-Robus coreanus red wine was investigated during a post-fermentation period of three months. The ACE inhibitory activity of the red wine increased as the post-fermentation period prolonged, and showed the highest ACE inhibitory activity of 70.4% 60 days post-fermentation. However, the antioxidant activity declined significantly to 47.2% during the post-fermentation period of 60 days. In terms of sensory evaluation, the Vitis hybrid-Robus coreanus red wine had the best acceptability 60 days post-fermentation.
