RESUMEN

Abstract Except for a few stick insects that are economically valuable, most species be considered to be forest pests, so it is extremely important to obtain plant host-use information of more stick insects. In this paper, the plant hosts of three species of stick insects were recorded for the first time. We also discovered these stick insects can feed upon the flowers or leaves of plants. Lopaphus unidentatus (Chen & He, 1995) (Phasmida: Lonchodidae) attacked Hypericum choisianum Wall. ex N. Robson, 1973 (Hypericaceae), Leurophasma dolichocercum Bi, 1995 (Phasmida: Aschiphasmatidae) attacked Antenoron filiforme (Thunb.) Roberty & Vautier, 1964 (Polygonaceae) and Megalophasma granulatum Bi, 1995 (Phasmida: Lonchodidae) attacked Debregeasia orientalis C. J. Chen, 1991 (Urticaceae). Finally, we were lucky enough to also obtain photographs of them mating and feeding.

RESUMEN

Abstract Introduction: The olfactory system is affected by the nutritional balance and chemical state of the body, serving as an internal sensor. All bodily functions are affected by energy loss, including olfaction; hunger can alter odour perception. Objective: In this study, we investigated the effect of fasting on olfactory perception in humans, and also assessed perceptual changes during satiation. Methods: The "Sniffin' Sticks" olfactory test was applied after 16 h of fasting, and again at least 1 h after Ramadan supper during periods of satiation. All participants were informed about the study procedure and provided informed consent. The study protocol was approved by the local Ethics Committee of Gaziosmanpaşa Taksim Education and Research Hospital (09/07/2014 no: 60). The study was conducted in accordance with the basic principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. Results: This prospective study included 48 subjects (20 males, 28 females) with a mean age of 33.6 ± 9.7 (range 20-72) years; their mean height was 169.1 ± 7.6 (range 150.0-185.0) cm, mean weight was 71.2 ± 17.6 (range 50.0-85.0) kg, and average BMI was 24.8 ± 5.3 (range 19.5-55.9). Scores were higher on all items pertaining to olfactory identification, thresholds and discrimination during fasting vs. satiation (p < 0.05). Identification (I) results: Identification scores were significantly higher during the fasting (median = 14.0) vs. satiation period (median = 13.0). Threshold (T) results: Threshold scores were significantly higher during the fasting (median = 7.3) vs. satiation period (median = 6.2). Discrimination (D) results: Discrimination scores were significantly higher during the fasting (median = 14.0) vs. satiation period (median = 13.0). The total TDI scores were 35.2 (fasting) vs. 32.6 (satiation). When we compared fasting threshold value of >9 and ≤9, the gap between the fasting and satiety thresholds was significantly greater in >9 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Olfactory function improved during fasting and declined during satiation. The olfactory system is more sensitive, and more reactive to odours, under starvation conditions, and is characterised by reduced activity during satiation. This situation was more pronounced in patients with a better sense of smell. Olfaction-related neurotransmitters should be the target of further study.

Conclusão: A função olfatória melhorou durante o jejum e diminuiu durante a saciedade.

The term asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy indicates persistent actively multiplying bacteria within the urinary tract without showing any symptom in pregnancy. A total of 500 pregnant women were screened for the incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria by comparing the reliability of urine dip stick evaluation for nitrites and leukocyte esterase activity with that of urine culture in diagnosing asymptomaticbacteriuria. The efficacy of single dose antimicrobial therapy (2 g of Cephalexin or 3 g of Amoxycillin) was evaluated for eradicating asymptomatic bacteriuria. The incidence was found to be 9.2% among the 500 cases in the study group. The dip stick screening could detect the bacteriuric patients correctly in 89.1% of cases. Single dose therapy cured 76.1% of asymptomatic bacteriuria patients. Amoxycillin was found to be more effective when compared to Cephalexin as a single dose antimicrobial therapy.

RESUMEN

Foreign bodies in External Auditory Canal (EAC) are common in both adults and children. Removal of foreign body requires skill but usually successfully performed in the ENT department. A 40 year old female patient presented with right ear discharge with decreased hearing. On examination, a pale, scanty, mucopurulent discharge, foul smelling with blood tinge, persisting even after medications. After aural toileting, tympanic membrane was perforated with granulation tissue in middle ear. Multiple broom sticks were found in the external auditory canal, mastoid antrum was removed via post auricular approach with excision of polyp with radical mastoid exploration. Removal of foreign body from EAC is an essential skill for ENT surgeon. Careful removal can prevent further trauma and complications. An aural polyp with ear discharge, never attempt to pull/avulsion.

Resultados: Se logró seguimiento a 10 pacientes.

Introduction: To access the sellar region we can use the transcranial, transeptal, or transnasal endoscopic approaches, which may cause different degrees of hyposmia. It has described less morbidity to use the endocopic technique, however, there are few studies directed at olfactory outcomes. Aim: To determine the presence of olfactory impairment secondary to endoscopic transnasal approach. Material and method: 12 patients with tumors in the sellar region were enrolled during 8 months. They were underwent a smell test preoperatively, operated by endoscopic transnasal approach, and controlled with postoperative retesting, after one month. Results: Follow-up was achieved to 10 patients. 6 (60%) presented a normal preoperative smell test. Within one postoperative month, olfactory improvement was found in 1 (10%) patient, 8 (80%) remained in the same category and 1 (10%) had olfactory impairment. In all, 9 out of 10 patients (90%) maintain or improve their sense of smell after surgery. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the transnasal endoscopic approach used in this study, doesn't produce olfactory impairment. Given that is also an effective and relatively safe approach, we believe that is a feasible alternative for use in patients with tumor pathology in the sellar region.

RESUMEN

Objective: To determine the prevalence of needle stick injuries (NSIs) among junior doctors of RIMS and to assess the measures undertaken by the respondents after the NSI. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in RIMS, Imphal, Manipur among internees, house officers and post graduate trainees from Sept to Oct 2011. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics like mean, percentage and standard deviation were used. Analysis was done using Chi square test. And P-value of <0.05 was taken as significant. Results: Out of 382 eligible respondents, 289 participated in the study. Males were 70.2% (n=203). Prevalence of NSI among junior doctors within the last one year was 39.4% (N=114). Of the three designations, NSI was highest among the house officers. Most NSI took place while blood withdrawal (33.3%), suturing (27.3%), giving injections (16.6%) and recapping (14.9%). Majority of those doctors injured, 56.1% attributed NSI during rush hour. Around fifty-four percent of them were not wearing gloves during the NSI. Nearly forty-five percent of the doctors washed their injured part with water and soap and also applied antiseptic as immediate measures after NSI. Only 10 (8.8%) took Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Conclusion: Needle stick injuries among junior doctors are common and often not reported and majority of them did not take post exposure prophylaxis. These findings warranted the need for ongoing attention to strategies to reduce such injuries in a systematic way and to improve reporting system so that appropriate medical care can be delivered.

RESUMEN

Streptococcus mutans is responsible for causing dental caries in humans and utilizes sucrose for its growth. The dextransucrase (EC 2.4.1.5) is responsible for sucrose metabolism, which exhibits both hydrolytic and glucosyltransferase activities. In this study, we examined the effects of the plant phenols, namely gallic, tannic and syringic acids and aqueous extracts of certain traditionally used chewing sticks (Acacia arabica, Azadirachta indica, Pongamia pinnata and Salvadora persica) for prevention of dental caries on hydrolytic activity of dextransucrsae in S. mutans. Gallic acid (4-5 mM) produced 80-90% inhibition of the enzyme, while tannic acid (0.2 mM) and syringic acid (5 mM) inhibited the enzyme activity 80% and 48%, respectively in vitro. The aqueous extracts of chewing sticks produced 35-40% inhibition of dextransucrase activity at 5 mg phenol concentration. Kinetic analysis revealed mixed-type of enzyme inhibition by polyphenols, where both Km and Vmax were altered. The value of Ki for tannic, gallic and syringic acids were 0.35, 1.6 and 1.94 mM, respectively. The enzyme inhibition by polyphenols was optimum at pH 7-7.5, while by plant extract was maximum at pH 5-6. These results suggest that plant polyphenols may find potential applications in the prevention and control of dental caries by inhibiting dextransucrase activity in S. mutans.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to present the controversial aspects in performing inferential statistical analysis with regard to selection of the experimental unit and procedures adopted in the case of pre-test failures. Methods: Eighty-seven dissertations and theses in the field of dentistry were evaluated, for which microtensile testing was made available at three public Universities in the State of São Paulo were performed, namely: School of Dentistry, USP; School of Dentistry, Unesp (Araraquara and São José dos Campos) and the Piracicaba School of Dentistry (Unicamp). Results: Regarding the experimental unit, 34 (39.08%) theses and/or dissertations used the “stick” and 53 (60.91%) the “tooth/block” type. With regard to pretest failures, 9 (10.34%) theses and/or dissertations attributed the value “0”, 6 (6.89%) disregarded the sticks, 2 (2.29%) attributed the minimum value of 2 MPa, 1 (1.14%) the minimum value of 4 MPa, 1 (1.14%) attributed half the minimum value of the group and 68 (78.16%) did not mention the occurrence of pretest failures. Conclusion: At present the experimental unit is considered to be the tooth (or ceramic block) and not the stick. As it relates to pre-test failures, the following are considered: attribution of a minimum bond strength value under experimental condition or in the group considered, an expressed number and percentage of cases of failures under each experimental condition; failures included in the statistical analysis and detailed explantion of how the authors performed with regard experimental designs (experimental unit and premature failures).

RESUMEN

Background and Aim: The use of chewing sticks has been well documented since ancient times in India. Chewing sticks are a good alternative to the toothbrush for maintaining oral hygiene. The present study was designed and conducted to compare and evaluate the antimicrobial effects of the aqueous extracts of neem, miswak, mango, and banyan chewing sticks against two bacterial species considered the most important in the initiation and progression of dental caries, namely Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, respectively. Materials and Methods: Twigs of the above mentioned chewing sticks were sun dried and powdered, and sterile aqueous solutions of 10%, 25% and 50% concentrations were prepared. Culture plates for S mutans and L acidophilus were prepared and the growth was transferred to nutrient agar and Mueller-Hinton agar; antimicrobial activity of the extracts was tested after 72 h, using the disc diffusion method. Normal saline was used as control. Results: The antimicrobial activity of neem, miswak, and mango extracts increased as their concentrations increased. Both banyan extract and saline showed no antimicrobial activity against the organisms tested. Conclusion and Recommendations: Based on the zones of inhibition, aqueous extracts of neem showed the most antimicrobial activity against S mutans, while miswak extracts showed superior antimicrobial activity against L acidophilus. We recommend further phytochemical and pharmacological studies to discover newer nonsynthetic tooth pastes and mouthwashes.

RESUMEN

Ethnobotanical survey was done in Jimma, Ethiopia, to identify the plants used for oral hygiene and evaluate the same against a selected oral pathogen. The survey revealed the use of chewing sticks to manage oral hygiene/infection. In spite of their wide use, very little has been done to evaluate their antimicrobial activity. Hence 11 chewing stick plants were chosen for antimicrobial study against an oral pathogen – Candida albicans the causative organism for oral candidiasis by agar well diffusion (Perez, 1991). The results revealed that Olea europaea extract showed maximum inhibition on its own. The activity of Justicia schimperiana was increased to three fold when combined with cinnamon and brown honey. The research documents the use of chewing sticks to manage oral infection caused by Candida albicans, which will be of immense assistance to developing countries with financial constraints and limited health care facilities.

RESUMEN

The idiopathic Parkinson disease (IPD) is traditionally diagnosed by motor signs, but non-motor symptoms and signs are frequent and may help in the clinical diagnosis. PURPOSE: To evaluate the olfactory function in Brazilian healthy subjects, patients with early-onset PD (EOPD) and late-onset PD (LOPD) using the Sniffin' Sticks odor-identification test (SST). METHOD: We studied 70 patients with IPD (19 EOPD and 51 LOPD) and 70 controls matched for gender, age and years of schooling. Subjects with dementia and loss of smell for other reasons were excluded. RESULTS: The SST showed a significant difference (p<0.001) between groups: control groups (12.0±0.3), EOPD (8.3±0.7), and LOPD (6.7±0.4) when the groups were adjusted for gender, age, disease duration, and years of schooling. CONCLUSION: Both groups of IPD patients presented olfactory impairments, but those whose symptoms started before 45 years-old (EOPD) had better sense of smell than the LOPD patients.

Background and Aims: The effectiveness of an ideal antimicrobial agent depends on its ability to kill microbes while causing minimal toxicity to host cells. Several studies have been reported on the antimicrobial effects of chewing sticks (Salvadora persica) on oral bacteria. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of Persica™ and chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwashes on cultured human and mouse cell lines. Materials and Methods: This was an experimental study. The toxic effects of four dilutions of Persica™ and CHX mouthwashes on KB, Saos-2, J744 A1, and gingival fibroblast cells were evaluated by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] assay. The effect of fetal calf serum (FCS) components on the cytotoxicity of these mouthwashes was also investigated. Statistical Analysis: Analysis of variance and the Kruskal-Wallis test were used to evaluate the results. Results: The results indicated that Persica™, at concentrations higher than 0.1%, exerted a very significant cytotoxic effect on all the cell lines (P < 0.01). CHX, at a concentration of 0.001%, exerted toxic effects only on gingival fibroblasts; concentrations higher than 0.001% were required to produce significant cell death in the other cell lines. At all the concentrations under study, both Persica™ and CHX exerted significantly greater cytotoxic effects in the absence of FCS than in its presence (i.e., in control culture medium). The toxicities of both mouthwashes were attenuated in the presence of FCS (10%). Conclusion: Our results indicate that both Persica™ and CHX mouthwashes are toxic to macrophage, epithelial, fibroblast, and osteoblast cells in a concentration-dependent manner.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The aim of the current study was to investigate the changes of the olfactory function in the Korean elderly population related to cognitive decline by using the CDR (Clinical Dementia Rating scale) and KVSS Test (Korean Version of Sniffin' Sticks Test). METHODS: 41 subjects between the ages of 65-85 years, were included in this study. All subjects were screened to exclude conditions affecting olfactory functions. These subjects were divided into three groups according to CDR. 23 subjects belonged to the CDR 0 group, 9 to the CDR 0.5 group and 9 to the CDR 1 group. The KVSS Test consisted of the olfactory threshold test and olfactory identification test. RESULTS: Significant differences were found among the CDR 0 group, CDR 0.5 group and CDR 1 group (p0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the cognitive deficits were associated with the decrease of scores in the olfactory identification test and that the olfactory identification test may have clinical utility in the diagnosis of the dementia.
