RESUMEN

ABSTRACT@#Salmon skin extract contains high proline and hydroxyproline, and has been suggested as a potential topical agent for traumatic oral ulcer healing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of salmon skin extract as traumatic oral ulcer healing. A total of 32 Wistar rats (200 g to 250 g) were distributed into four groups. Group 1 served as the control group (no treatment), Group 2 was topically treated with salmon skin extract agent 4%, Group 3 was topically treated with salmon skin extract agent 5%, and Group 4 was topically treated with salmon skin extract agent 6%. Traumatic ulcers at lip mucosa were performed in all rats and 0.1 ml salmon skin extract was applied on the ulcer twice daily for seven days. The animals were euthanised on the last day of treatment. Biopsy specimens were taken from the lip mucosa in all rats for epithelial thickness evaluation and the study for number of fibroblasts by histological analysis. Significant increase in epithelial thickness and the number of fibroblasts (p > 0.05) was observed in salmon skin extract treatment groups as compared to the control group. Salmon skin extract 6% treatment group had the highest epithelial thickness and the number of fibroblasts amongst the study groups. Salmon skin extract promises an innovative topical application treatment for traumatic oral ulcer healing. Salmon skin extract 6% was the most effective concentration for traumatic oral ulcer healing.

RESUMEN

Background@#Traumatic ulcer is a lesion formed by a local tissue damage due to trauma on epithelial layer. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) plays an important role in wound healing, especially in angiogenesis. Golden sea cucumber (Stichopus hermanni) is believed to accelerate the wound healing process. @*Objective@#To prove that golden sea cucumber extract can increase VEGF expression in oral mucous membrane traumatic ulcer in rat.@*Method@#S. hermanni extract was prepared by freeze-dry method, then an extract was made using PEG 400 or PEG 4000 at 40% and 80% concentrations, respectively, and applied to the animal’s oral wounds. The animals were divided into three groups: control; 40% S. hermanni extract gel; and 80% S. hermanni extract gel. The ulcers that formed on day 3 were rubbed gently with S. hermanni extract gel. After being sacrificed on day 4, sample tissues from the lower lips were prepared for histopathology to count the number of VEGF expression. The results were analyzed using the One-Way ANOVA statistical test. @*Results@#A significant increase in the VEGF expression of 80% concentration S. hermanni extract gel was found compared with those in the control group (p=0.00).@*Conclusion@#Golden sea cucumber extract (Stichopus hermanni) gel increased the VEGF expression in oral mucous traumatic ulcer.

Introduction: dentistry has been gaining a fundamental place in the hospital environment, especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), where the dental surgeon (CD) acts in several situations, ranging from the diagnosis of oral pathologies to the various procedures required for oral health And maintenance of the patient's quality of life. Among the oral complications that may occur in patients with this profile are traumatic lesions, which, when present, require dental treatment and follow-up. Objective: the present case illustrates the performance of CD in a neurological ICU where an advanced stage breast cancer patient presented a traumatic ulcer on the lower lip requiring preventive planning and treatment for the condition. Method: this is a case report with a descriptive method. Results and Discussion: the patient was followed by the staff of a private hospital who attended the patients once a day. However, when a new trauma occurred, there was not on-call CD and the severity was greater. Conclusion: therefore, with this article we emphasize the importance of the integral presence of a CD in the ICU in order to minimize oral complications and provide a better quality of life for the patient.
