RESUMEN

Lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostate hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH) and depression are both increasing in Chinese aging males. However, the relationship still remains unknown. To explore their relationship, a retrospective cohort study based on propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted by analyzing the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study dataset. After data cleaning, a total of 5125 participants were enrolled and subjected to PSM; 1351 pairs were matched and followed for 2 years. Further logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were performed to evaluate, model and visualize the relationship between depression and LUTS/BPH. Moreover, subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were adopted to verify the robustness of the conclusions. Before PSM, depressive patients showed higher odds of LUTS/BPH in all three models adjusting for different covariates (P < 0.001). After PSM, univariate logistic regression revealed that depressive patients had higher risks for LUTS/BPH than participants in the control group (odds ratio [OR] = 2.10, P < 0.001). The RCS results indicated a nonlinear (P < 0.05) and inverted U-shaped relationship between depression and LUTS/BPH. In the subgroup analyses, no increased risks were found among participants who were not married or cohabitating, received an education, had an abnormal body mass index (<18.5 kg m

RESUMEN

This study aimed to propose an operational definition of late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) that incorporates both clinical symptoms and serum testosterone measurements to evaluate the prevalence of LOH in aging males in China. A population-based sample of 6296 men aged 40 years-79 years old was enrolled from six representative provinces in China. Serum total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured and free testosterone (cFT) was calculated. The Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) scale was used to evaluate the LOH symptoms. Finally, 5078 men were included in this analysis. The TT levels did not decrease with age (P = 0.59), and had no relationship with AMS symptoms (P = 0.87 for AMS total score, P = 0.74 for ≥ 3 sexual symptoms). The cFT levels decreased significantly with age (P < 0.01) and showed a negative association with the presence of ≥ 3 sexual symptoms (P = 0.03). The overall estimated prevalence of LOH was 7.8% (395/5078) if a cFT level <210 pmol l

RESUMEN

Erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition closely related to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, is frequently associated with obesity. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of ED and evaluate the associated risk factors in a cohort of 254 young (18-49 years) nondiabetic obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30 kg m-2) men from primary care. Erectile function (International Index of Erectile Function [IIEF-5] questionnaire), quality of life (Aging Males' Symptoms [AMS scale]), and body composition analysis (Tanita MC-180MA) were determined. Total testosterone was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to study the factors associated with ED. ED prevalence was 42.1%. Subjects with ED presented higher BMI, waist circumference, number of components of the metabolic syndrome, AMS score, insulin resistance, and a more unfavorable body composition than those without ED. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a pathological AMS score (odds ratio [OR]: 4.238, P 40% of subjects. A pathological AMS score, the degree of obesity, and age were positively associated with ED, while elevated HDL-cholesterol levels were inversely associated with the odds of presenting ED. Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the long-term consequences of ED in this population.

RESUMEN

Purpose: An open-label, single-arm study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of porcine placental extract (PPE) ingestion to improve late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) syndrome symptoms. In addition, we reported the safety of continuous PPE ingestion in biochemistry tests.Materials and Methods: Test food containing PPE was given daily to healthy male subjects with an Aging Males’ Symptoms (AMS) score of ≥27, who were assessed as having LOH syndrome. AMS score, blood hormone level, and other parameters were measured before the start of PPE ingestion, Week 4, and Week 8. And adverse events that occurred during the ingestion period were accumulated. Results: Excluding one subject who withdrew from the study due to an adverse event unrelated to the test food, 14 subjects were included in the analysis. In terms of AMS score, no improvement was observed at Week 4, whereas a significant improvement was observed at Week 8. AMS scores were further categorized into three subscales (psychological, somatic, and sexual) and analyzed. The results showed a significant improvement from baseline in somatic scores at Week 8. Meanwhile, no significant change in sexual hormone levels was observed. At Week 8, improvements from baseline were observed in renal function and LDL cholesterol level. There were no adverse events related to the test food. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that 8-week PPE ingestion in middle-aged and elderly men can improve LOH syndrome symptoms while having little effect on sexual hormone secretion.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there are differences between men's and their couples' perception of health related quality of life during the male climacteric period. METHOD: Cross-sectional and correlational design. The studied sample consisted of 49 couples, made up of men in a range of 40 to 65 years of age and women in a range of 40 to 60 years of age, enrolled in a Community Health Center in Concepción, Chile. Couples were interviewed in their homes after providing informed consent. Both members answered the Aging Males' Symptoms independently. Descriptive statistics, Kappa and Student-t tests were used. RESULTS: The average age was 53.2 years and 50.7 for men and women, respectively. 58.4% of the men showed any kind of alteration of their quality of life, having more deterioration in the somato-vegetative and sexual subscale. By comparing men scores in three sub-scales to their couples' perception, only psychological sub-scale (p<0.01) presented a significant difference. CONCLUSION: Men's perception of quality of life related to health during the male climacteric period is not different from their couples' in somato-vegetative and sexual sub-scales. The psychological subscale is the only exception.

RESUMEN

Background: According to the Indian census 2011, India has the largest population of the elderly. Very few studies have been carried out in North India to assess the awareness about andropause in men, which is why this study was conceived. Objectives: To assess the awareness about andropause and its treatment modalities among the men of Chandigarh. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted at an Urban Health Training Center (UHTC-44 B) of Government Medical College and Hospital Sector 32, Chandigarh (GMCH) in male patients attending the outpatient department. This non-interventional individual cross-sectional study was carried out from August 2010 to August 2011 in men aged 40 years and above. Systematic, random sampling was carried out and the study sample comprised 757 men. The subjects were given pre-structured and pre-tested questionnaires that had questions pertaining to socio-demographic profile, ADAM scale, views about andropause, its treatment modalities, etc., Results: Out of the sample size of 757 men, subjects from the urban area (323; 43.1) were more in contrast to that of the peri-urban (41; 31.9) and slum areas (393; 259). Maximum number of patients belonged to the age group of 40-49 years (342; 26.3), followed by those in age group 60-69 years (141; 18.6). It was found that awareness about the term andropause was found only among 17 (2.2%) subjects, whereas the knowledge of a syndrome synonymous to that of menopause in females was even less 7 (0.9%) patients positive for andropause were found to increase with increase of age (40-49; 35.7, 50-59; 81.2, 60-69; 96.5). Only 123 (11.4%) had an idea about the treatment of andropause. The keenness to resort to treatment or seek medical advice was shown by 355 (47.3%). Subjects in the age group of less than 60 years resorted to injections (15; 4.7) and transdermal patches (6; 1.09) as testosterone-replacement therapy. Herbal medicines were especially taken by those subjects in the age group 60-70 years, (74.3%; 101). Conclusion: Awareness about andropause and its treatment modalities is less in men.

RESUMEN

Background: Most of the country has been increasing the life expectancy and to relate aging man also have been increasing among population. Affected by human aging internal major factor is the change of Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonadal axis. Thus, we have proposed to study to change of regulating gonadothropin-gonadal axe in aging males. Goal: To study the serum total testosterone, gonadothropin hormones level in aging males and its correlation with aging. Materials and Methods: In this study were involved 149 healthy Mongolian men aged above 35 years. Subjects were randomly selected. Blood samples were collected in the morning 8.30-10.00 AM, 4ml blood from vein vassal. The serum concentration of total testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone was assayed by ELISA. Results: Total participant’s average age was 57.8±13.4 years. Average level of testosterone was 4.95±2.08ng/ml and there is no significant correlation with aging (r=0.084, p=0.331). But average level of FSH was 9.12±9.09 IU/L and FSH has increased with aging. Between age and FSH was found moderate and direct correlation (r=0.425, p0.05) correlation of LH (β=0.170) with Testosterone, which was stronger than FSH (β=0.156).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is regarded as a risk factor of cardiovascular disease. We observed and compared aging males symptoms (AMS) between healthy and metabolic syndrome patients in middle-aged Korean men to evaluate clinical significance of AMS. METHODS: From May 2009 to July 2009, 171 middle-aged men (over 40 years-old) who visited a health promotion center of a university hospital in Gyeonggi Province were enrolled in study. The subjects were divided into two groups; metabolic syndrome (N = 87) vs. control (N = 84) and measured the aging male symptoms (AMS) scale. AMS were also grouped according to its severity. RESULTS: There were no significant differences except, weight, body mass index between two groups. In AMS severity, 'severe' group show higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome. And the group of metabolic syndrome gets higher AMS score than control. Among the five constitutive factors of metabolic syndrome, the prevalence of fasting blood sugar (> or = 100 mg/dL) and triglyceride (> or = 150 mg/dL) level is higher 'moderates' and 'severe' groups in AMS severity. In the subscale analysis of AMS, there are significant differences between two groups in sexual and somato-vegitative axis, but are not in psychological axis. With age-adjusted analysis, the results still show same trend. CONCLUSION: It might be necessary to approach aging males symptoms comprehensively during the management of metabolic syndrome in middle-aged men. And it could be helpful in treatment to recognize and control metabolic syndrome factors for the patients with severe aging males symptoms.
