RESUMEN

SUMMARY: Partial or total dental loss (edentulism) is associated with decreased quality of life. Chile has large socioeconomic gaps, which are also recognized in oral health, but it is not known how Edentulism has evolved throughout the country. The aim of this study was to determine the edentulism in people born during the 19th and 20th centuries in Chile, who died in the 20th century, and to compare it with current data from the Chilean Ministry of Health (MINSAL) to observe its evolution in the country. For this purpose, 60 3D models of skulls from the Subactual Osteological Collection of Santiago were analyzed (30 individuals per sex), in which the presence and absence of teeth in antemortem in the maxilla were analyzed. A high percentage of tooth loss was observed, with 65 % partial edentulism, a 30 % total edentulism, and only 5 % had complete dentition in this osteological collection. In addition, a significant decrease over time was found; in 2017, the percentage of complete dentition at the national level was 32.8 %. A higher frequency of edentulism was also found in females from the osteological collection, with a significant probability of twice as much edentulism as in males. However, this sex difference was smaller than those found in the current study. Our study is the first to compare edentulism in Chile in two different time periods, since, in addition to studying it in the 19th and 20th century, it is carried out with data from the present day and in line with previous research, reveals the importance of socioeconomic and sex variables for dental loss.

Introduction: Infant mortality is a health phenomenon directly related to the deleterious living conditions of both the infant's home and adverse socioeconomic and sanitary factors. Objective: To characterize inequalities in infant mortality according to differential living conditions in two populations districts of Santiago de Cuba. Methods: A descriptive, exploratory ecological study was carried out in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba in 1995-1997. The units of analysis were constituted by the areas framed in two populations districts of the city. Results: Bothe population districts were stratified, according to their living conditions, in settlements with less unfavorable and more unfavorable living conditions. Higher infant mortality was estimated in the settlement with more unfavorable living conditions (8.7 deaths per 1000 live births), where asphyxia, anoxia and hypoxia predominated as clinical causes of death and clinical causes reducible for good care at birth. Conclusions: A differential profile of infant mortality, according to living conditions, was identified within the population settlements of the urban districts of Santiago de Cuba. The distinctive risks of infant death were at the expense of the neonatal component, mainly for clinical causes reducible by good care at birth.

The present report aims to sequentially and visually present the maxillary protraction of a Class III skeletal patient using the BAMP protocol. After conducting a clinical analysis of the case, it was decided to perform orthopedic treatment using titanium miniplates with Class III intermaxillary elastics following the BAMP protocol, in conjunction with dentoalveolar orthodontic treatment using fixed bimaxillary appliances with Roth prescription 0.022" Mini Sprint Forestadent. The success of the interceptive approach using the BAMP protocol is observed. This approach managed to reduce both the time and complexity of orthodontic treatment and also decreased the need for orthognathic surgery in adulthood. The BAMP treatment, designed for specific ages and growth stages, proved successful in a 12-year-old patient without growth potential. Miniplates as anchorage are effective for maxillary protraction in various cases, although post-surgical follow-up and education are required. It is recommended to remove the miniplates when they are no longer necessary, adapting the protocol to each patient. In summary, miniplate treatment is effective in correcting Class III skeletal anomalies.

RESUMEN

Abstract Background: The Brief Measure of Preoperative Emotional Stress (B-MEPS) is a suitable screening tool for Preoperative Emotional Stress (PES). However, personalized decision-making demands practical interpretation of the refined version of B-MEPS. Thus, we propose and validate cut-off points on the B-MEPS to classify PES. Also, we assessed if the cut-off points screened preoperative maladaptive psychological features and predicted postoperative opioid use. Methods: This observational study comprises samples of two other primary studies, with 1009 and 233 individuals, respectively. The latent class analysis derived emotional stress subgroups using B-MEPS items. We compared membership with the B-MEPS score through the Youden index. Concurrent criterion validity of the cut-off points was performed with the severity of preoperative depressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing, central sensitization, and sleep quality. Predictive criterion validity was performed with opioid use after surgery. Results: We chose a model with three classes labeled mild, moderate, and severe. The Youden index points −0.1663 and 0.7614 of the B-MEPS score classify individuals, in the severe class, with a sensitivity of 85.7% (80.1%-90.3%) and specificity of 93.5% (91.5-95.1%). The cut-off points of the B-MEPS score have satisfactory concurrent and predictive criterion validity. Conclusions: These findings showed that the preoperative emotional stress index on the B-MEPS offers suitable sensitivity and specificity for discriminating the severity of preoperative psychological stress. They provide a simple tool to identify patients prone to severe PES related to maladaptive psychological features, which might influence the perception of pain and analgesic opioid use in the postoperative period.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the effectiveness of a customized distalizer with Variety SP® screws anchored on palatal miniscrews for upper molar distalization. Methods: Seventeen patients aged between 12.5 and 24 years underwent distalization with a customized distalizer. Lateral cephalogram and cast analysis were performed before and after distalization. Linear and angular parameters of the upper first molar, first premolar, and central incisor were assessed. Results: Distalization with the force passing near the center of resistance (CRes) of the upper first molars resulted in distal movement, with minimal distal tipping (2.8±0.45°, p<0.05). However, distalization passing occlusal to the CRes led to greater distal tipping (13.6±1.63°, p<0.05). Statistically significant spontaneous distal tipping and distal movement of the upper first premolars occurred, with a mean of 6.2±1.24° (p<0.05) and 0.68±0.34 mm (p<0.05), respectively. The positional change of the upper central incisors presented a mean of -0.23±0.1 mm (p>0.05) and 2.65±1.1° (p<0.05). Upper first molar intrusion was statistically significant, with a mean of 0.88±0.2 mm (p<0.05). Upper right and left first molars rotation towards palatal midline presented mean of 4.1±0.19° (p<0.05) and 3.4 ±0.1° (p<0.05), respectively. Additionally, the distance between upper right and left first molars increased significantly, with a mean of 2.54±0.01 mm (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study successfully demonstrated the efficiency of molar distalization without anchorage loss using a customized distalizer anchored on palatal miniscrews.

ABSTRACT Objective: To estimate the serum levels of non-radiologic biomarkers, Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), and Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3 (IGFBP-3) to potentially identify the pubertal growth spurt in skeletal Class II malocclusion subjects. Material and Methods: Eighty subjects (M-38, F-42) with skeletal Class II malocclusion in the age range of 11-18 years were recruited for the cross-sectional study. Human serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were quantitatively assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the cervical stage (CS) was evaluated from a lateral cephalogram. Results: Gender-wise comparison of the mean serum IGF-1 levels revealed that the initial peak was detected at CS2 in both genders, [males (87.87 ng/mL), females (78.49 ng/mL)]. However, there was a cognizable difference in the second peak of the mean serum IGF-1 levels between males (CS5, 68.58 ng/mL) and females (CS4, 74.63 ng/mL). Mean IGFBP-3 serum levels in male subjects were high in CS4 (47.24 ng/mL) with a further spike in CS6 (50.54 ng/mL), and in female subjects, it was found to be highest in CS3 (51.95 ng/mL) and then in CS5 (49.68 ng/mL). Conclusion: Mean IGF-1 levels exhibited both sexes' prepubertal and late pubertal spikes. Mean IGFBP-3 levels revealed a pubertal and a late pubertal spike in both sexes, with an earlier growth trend observed specific to females compared to males.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the relationship between the mother's educational level and family income on the dental caries experience of their children. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, University of Babylon, Iraq. The sample comprised 100 children aged 5-15 years. Data was collected in two parts: first, a self-administered questionnaire was obtained from mothers: Mother's age, level of education, family income, child age, and gender. Another part included the clinical examination of dental caries that was measured for mothers and their children using the DMFT/dmft index for permanent and primary dentition sequentially. The collected data were statistically analyzed using mean ± standard deviation (SD mean and standard deviation, t-test, and F-test. Results: The sample showed 60% were boys and 40% were girls, 86% with dental caries. Mothers with a high level of education and high monthly income have significantly lower dental caries experiences than their children (p<0.05). In contrast, there was a significant difference between the two age groups (p=0.000), a considerable difference between the level of family monthly income and dmft (p=0.01), and there was a correlation value between the caries index DMFT value of the children and their mother with mother's education level. Conclusion: Many dental caries were reported among Babylon City/Iraq children. Mothers with high educational levels and family monthly income were correlated to lower dental care for their children than those with low educational levels and economic status, so they need to focus on oral health knowledge and encourage prophylactic intervention and preventive measures for the population.

RESUMEN

In 2023, drug discovery develops steadily, with improvement of small molecule drugs discovery keeps pace with biological drugs in this year. The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research of U.S. Food and Drug Administration has totally approved 55 kinds of new drugs which have significantly promotion compared to 37 new drugs approval in 2022, including 38 kinds of new molecular entities, 17 kinds of biological drugs, 5 kinds of gene therapeutics and 2 cell therapeutics. The proportion of first-in-class drugs increased steadily, with 13 small molecule first-in-class drugs and 7 biological first-in-class drugs approved this year, mostly in the fields of cancer and rare diseases. Among them, a plurality of first-initiated small molecule drugs exhibits breakthrough significance, such as the first neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor antagonist fezolinetant, the first retinoic acid receptor (RIG-I) agonist palovarotene, the first protein kinase B (AKT) inhibitor capivasertib, the first complement factor B inhibitor iptacopan, etc. The pioneering drug has huge academic and commercial value, and has become the target of the academic and industrial circles. However, first-in-class drugs not only need new targets, new mechanisms and new molecules, but also need to comprehensively verify the causality between new targets and diseases, study the correlation between new mechanisms and drug efficacy, and explore the balance between new molecules and drug-manufacturing properties. This article analyzed the research background, development process and therapeutic application of three first-initiated small molecule drugs in this year, expecting to provide more research ideas and methods for more first-in-class drugs.

RESUMEN

Objective Hippocampal atrophy is a clinically important marker for the diagnosis of many psychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease‚ so accurate segmentation of the hippocampus is an important scientific issue. With the development of deep learning‚ a large number of advanced automatic segmentation method have been proposed. However‚ 3D hippocampal segmentation is still challenging due to the effects of various noises in MRI and unclear boundaries between various classes of the hippocampus. Therefore‚ the aim of this paper is to propose new method to segment the hippocampal head‚ body‚ and tail more accurately. Methods To overcome these challenges‚ this paper proposed two strategies. One was the spatial and frequency domain features adaptive fusion strategy‚ which reduced the influence of noise on feature extraction by automatically selecting the appropriate frequency combination through fast Fourier transform and convolution. The other was an inter-class boundary region enhancement strategy‚ which allowed the network to focus on learning the boundary regions by weighting the loss function of the boundary regions between each class to achieve the goal of pinpointing the boundaries and regulating the size of the hippocampal head‚ body and tail. Results Experiments performed on a 50-case teenager brain MRI dataset show that our method achieves state-of-the-art hippocampal segmentation. Hippocampal head‚ body and tail had been improved compared to the existing method. Ablation experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of our two proposed strategies‚ and we also validated that the network had a strong generalization ability on a 260-case Task04_Hippocampus dataset. It was shown that the method proposed in this paper could be used in more hippocampal segmentation scenarios. Conclusion The method proposed in this paper can help clinicians to observe hippocampal atrophy more clearly and accomplish more accurate diagnosis and follow-up of the condition.

RESUMEN

@#Skeletal Class III malocclusion is a complex malformation with a prevalence of 81.6% in Airlangga University Dental Hospital, distributed in patients aged 15-45 years old. Camouflage treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion improves prognosis with a mild-to-moderate shift. This study aimed to discuss orthodontic camouflage as an option for adult patients with Class III malocclusion, emphasizing its indications, implications, and expected results. This report presents the case of a 17-year-old male patient with poor facial aesthetics associated with protruded chin, abnormal functional shift, and temporomandibular joint pain. The facial profile was concave with lower anterior multiple diastemas, mandibular lip protrusion, mandibular displacement, and anterior crossbite. This case was treated by camouflage therapy using straight wire appliance system combined with elastic class III. After 24 months of treatment during the pandemic, the mandibular displacement and the crossbite were corrected, the teeth were arched, the anterior crossbite fixed, and the profile became convex. Camouflage orthodontic treatment can be an effective management option to achieve functional occlusion, stability, and a satisfactory aesthetic impression in adult patients with mild to moderate skeletal Class III deformities, anterior cross bite, and functional shift.

CBCT images of eighty-one untreated patients (40 anterior open bite patients and 41 normal overbite patients) with high-angle skeletal Class Ⅱ malocclusion were selected before treatment. Dolphin software was used to study the root length of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth and central incisor crown-root morphology, and the differences between the two groups were analyzed.@*Results@#There was no statistical significance in the root length of maxillary lateral incisor and canine between the open bite group and the normal overbite group, significant differences were found in the root length of maxillary central incisor (11.12 ± 1.37) mm、mandibular central incisor(10.15 ± 1.09)mm, mandibular lateral incisor(11.27 ± 1.15)mm and mandibular canine(12.81 ± 1.48)mm between the open bite group and the normal overbite group(P<0.05). On the other hand, the two groups were significantly different in crown-root morphology of the maxillary central incisor (1.10° ± 3.62° vs. 4.53° ± 2.30°, P<0.01) but not in the mandibular central incisor.@*Conclusion@#The root length of the maxillary central incisor, mandibular central incisor, mandibular lateral incisor, mandibular canine in high-angle Class Ⅱ open bite patients is shorter than that in high-angle Class Ⅱ normal overbite patients, and the long axis of the crown of the maxillary central incisor in high-angle Class Ⅱ open bite patients obviously deviates toward the labial side relative to the long axis of the root. The crown-root angle is smaller, which is beneficial to torque control or adduction movement of the anterior teeth in high-angle Class Ⅱ open bite patients.

RESUMEN

@#CpG oligonucleotide(CpG ODN)is a synthetic oligodeoxynucleotide containing non-methylated CpG,which has broad application prospects in disease prevention and clinical treatment. Among them,B class CpG ODN is widely used in vaccine research because of its strong immune stimulation and some motifs have entered the clinical research stage. At the same time, the problem of bacterial resistance in clinical treatment has become increasingly serious, and the development of bacterial vaccine with B class CpG ODN as adjuvant has become a research hotspot. This paper reviewed the current research status and related progress of the existing B class CpG ODN 1826,2006,2007 and 1668 motifs in bacterial vaccines, with a view to providing a reference for the subsequent development and application of bacterial vaccines.

RESUMEN

Objective@#To research the effectiveness of deep learning techniques in intelligently diagnosing dental caries and periapical periodontitis and to explore the preliminary application value of deep learning in the diagnosis of oral diseases@*Methods@#A dataset containing 2 298 periapical films, including healthy teeth, dental caries, and periapical periodontitis, was used for the study. The dataset was randomly divided into 1 573 training images, 233 validation images, and 492 test images. By comparing various neural network models, the MobileNetV3 network model with better performance was selected for dental disease diagnosis, and the model was optimized by tuning the network hyperparameters. The accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were used to evaluate the model's ability to recognize dental caries and periapical periodontitis. Class activation map was used to visualization analyze the performance of the network model@*Results@#The algorithm achieved a relatively ideal intelligent diagnostic effect with precision, recall, and accuracy of 99.42%, 99.73%, and 99.60%, respectively, and the F1 score was 99.57% for classifying healthy teeth, dental caries, and periapical periodontitis. The visualization of the class activation maps also showed that the network model can accurately extract features of dental diseases.@*Conclusion@#The tooth lesion detection algorithm based on the MobileNetV3 network model can eliminate interference from image quality and human factors and has high diagnostic accuracy, which can meet the needs of dental medicine teaching and clinical applications.

Introduction: Intergroup contact is a good predictor of positive attitudes towards other groups, relationships that could be mediated by lower intergroup anxiety. These associations have been analyzed among different groups, such as nationality or religion. However, contact and attitudes among social classes have been scarcely explored. For this reason, we analyzed the mediator effect of intergroup anxiety on the relationship between intergroup contact and positive attitudes from people of lower subjective social class to those of higher subjective social class. We expected a positive relationship between contact (quantity and quality) and positive attitudes, with the mediation of lower intergroup anxiety. Method: In a non-representative Chilean sample (N = 118), we conducted regressions analyses to evaluate our hypothesis. Results: the results supported our main hypothesis, contact quantity and quality were associated with more positive attitudes toward individuals of higher subjective social class, mediated by lower intergroup anxiety. Conclusions: we discussed the implications for relationships among social classes and the limitations associated with the sample and assessment of the social class.

Introduction: The socioeconomic level (SES) of families has a fundamental role in the academic performance of students, during the pandemic families with a low SES had fewer opportunities and increased inequalities due to economic and technical limitations, which could influence grades and academic performance. of the students Objective: To identify th e relationship between the SES and aca demic performance of nursing undergraduate students during COVID-19. Methodology: Cross-sectional, quantitative, analytical study with students who had distance education, the instrument called Socioeconomic Level (NSE) of the Mexican Association of Market Intelligence Agencies and Public Opinion (AMAI) was used. and the averages of the semester completed online. Results: 167 students participated, between the variables of academic performance and socioeconomic level a value of p = 0.961 was obtained, for the variables of sex, marital status an association was found with a p value less than 0.05. Conclusions: No relationship was identified between the variables of academic performance and socioeconomic level, however, other variables such as marital status and sex gave statistical significance, so it is suggested to delve into these variables as well as their relationship with academic performance.

RESUMEN

Abstract HIV risk perception and Intimate partner violence (IPV) are related to HIV infection in women. However, there is a lack of information regarding on the association between risk perception and IPV in the Mexican population. This study aimed to identify and characterize subgroups based on their risk perception through the analysis of latent classes and to evaluate the variables associated with HIV risk perception. An online survey was conducted to assess sexual and preventive behavior, HIV risk perception, and intimate partner violence. Three hundred thirty-two women participated; the sampling was for convenience. Two latent classes were identified: a group with risk perception (85%) and one without risk perception (14.6%). The variables associated with the risk perception were a sexual attraction to men, not having a stable partner, perceiving oneself as at risk of acquiring HIV due to sexual behavior, and the presence of IPV. HIV prevention programs for women must address the stigmas related to HIV, such as the idea that the risk only occurs when they have multiple sexual partners, promote accurate HIV risk perception and prevent IPV in all its expressions and contexts.

Objective: Angle class III malocclusion is characterized by mandibular protrusion, maxillary retrusion or a combination of both. In addition to impairing the patient's facial aesthetics, this malocclusion can cause functional and respiratory changes. One of the treatment alternatives for these cases is the use of the Petit mask and the Hyrax breaker device. This study aims to evaluate, through orthodontic cephalometry, whether the treatment with maxillary expansion in conjunction with the reverse traction of the maxilla reduces the aesthetic and functional problems of Class III patients. Case report: the case report described in the present work is about a patient who underwent this treatment, being described through cephalometric analysis, radiographic examinations, intraoral photos and clinical findings. Final considerations: The verification of the results obtained after the end of the treatment showed that the patient had a good adherence to the use of these devices and obtained satisfactory results in her masticatory function, in her occlusion and in her facial and dental aesthetics.(AU)
