RESUMEN

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>We measured and analyzed the angle between the longitudinal axis of incisor crown and tooth to provide a reference for orthodontists for selecting orthodontic methods and evaluating treatment results.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A total of 120 participants were included according to the criteria of Andrews' six keys, and cephalometric radiograph under the instructions of modified natural head position acquirement method was performed. The angles of maxillary incisor crown longitudinal axis, tooth longitudinal axis, occlusion plane (OP), and true vertical (TV) plane were measured, as well as mandibular incisors.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>As for maxillary incisors, the angle between crown longitudinal axis and TV plane, OP, and tooth longitudinal axis were 11.72°±4.71°, 73.29°±5.69°, and 20.04°±3.71°, respectively. For mandibular incisors, the angle between crown longitudinal axis and TV plane, OP, and tooth longitudinal axis were 16.03°±5.40°, 81.76°±4.81°, and 14.82°±4.01°, respectively. For the maxillary incisor, the angles between crown longitudinal axis and tooth longitudinal axis were mainly within 15° to 25°, whereas those for mandibular incisors were within 10° to 20°.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The longitudinal axis inclinations of the maxillary and mandibular incisor crown and of the incisor tooth need to be considered when cephalometric radiographs are used for treatment planning or for evaluating the treatment result.</p>

Angulation and inclination of clinical crown is important for diagnosing, treatment planning and developing convenient orthodontic attachments. The aim of the study was to establish normative data with higher reliability on the angulation and inclination of clinical crown of Koreans with normal occlusion. This study employed the dental casts of 307 (male, 187; female, 120) adult normal occlusion samples. The angulation and inclination of clinical crown were measured by set-up model checker. In order to ensure reliability, intra- and inter-rater error were evaluated 3 times. The resultant data obtained had excellent reliability, however, when compared with the previous data as well as with gender difference, clinically significant interpretation was impossible because the whithin-dataset normal variation was high, which was common pattern of angulation and inclination measuring data of previous research. The result of this biometric study seemed to suggest more substantive design of the multivariate, high-dimensional interpretation methodology of these normal variation is required if more compatible orthodontic appliance could be developed.

Precise bracket positioning is essential in modern orthodontics. However, there can be alterations in the vertical position of a bracket due to several reasons. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of variations in the vertical bracket position on the crown inclination in Korean patients with normal occlusion. From a larger group of what was considered to be normal occlusions obtained from the Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, Seoul National University, each of the final 10 subjects (6 males and 4 females, with an average age of 22.3 years) was selected. The dental models of each of the subjects were scanned three-dimensionally by a laser scanner, and measurements drawn from these were made on the scanned dental casts of the subjects were input into the computer program. From this the occlusal plane and the bracket plane were determined. The tooth plane was then constructed to measure the crown inclination on the bracket plane of each tooth. From a practical standpoint, information was obtained on the extent to which the torque of a tooth would be changed as the bracket position was to be moved vertically (in +/-0.5 mm, +/-1.0 mm, +/-1.5 mm) from its ideal position. A one way analysis of the variance (ANOVA) was used to compare each group of the different vertical distances from the bracket plane on a specific tooth. Duncan's multiple comparison test was then performed. There were statistically significant differences in the crown inclination among the groups of different vertical distances for the upper central incisor, upper lateral incisor, upper canine, upper first and second molars, lower first and second premolars, and lower first and second molars (p<0.05). On the upper anterior teeth, upper molars, lower premolars and lower molars, the resultant torque values due to the vertical displacement of the bracket were different depending on the direction of the displacement, occlusal or gingival. This study implies that the torque of these teeth should be handled carefully during the orthodontic treatment. In circumstances in which the bracket must be positioned more gingivally or occlusally due to various reasons, it would be useful to provide the chart of torque alteration of each tooth referred to in this study with its specified bracket prescription.

RESUMEN

The objects of this study were to analyze the crown angulation, crown inclination, molar offset angle, and crown in and out of the Korean adults having normal occlusion. 14 subjects (7 male, 7 female) were chosen in the 80 subjects who had ideal occlusion and beautiful profile we thought. The casts were obtained from the subjects, and then they were scanned with 3-dimensional scanner machine. We analyzed them with computer program based upon Andrews methods and the following results were obtained. 1. We got the norm of the crown angulation, crown inclination, molar offset angle, and crown in and out in the Korean adults. 2. The analysis using 3 dimensional scanner and computer program was more fast and accurate than the manual methods.
