RESUMEN

Functional orthopedic treatment seeks to improve skeletal and dental relationship of the jaws. The challenging task is to correctly position jaws antero-posteriorly and vertically with correct overbite, overjet and Centric relation. The Churro Jumper is an efficient, inexpensive and uncomplicated fixed flexible functional appliance. It is used to evaluate the efficacy of the Churro Jumper appliance in treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion with retrognathic mandible. Churro Jumper contributes in correction of Class II molar relationship by dento-alveolar effects on both jaws. There was up-righting of maxillary incisors and proclination of mandibular incisors. Churro Jumper is clinically efficient as well as effective appliance to correct skeletal class II malocclusion. The only problem with this appliance is its frequent breakage and oral hygiene maintenance causing inconvenience to both patient as well as operator.

RESUMEN

Objective To explore the characteristic of ACE gene I/D polymorphism in Han broad jumpers .Methods Distribu‐tion of ACE gene I/D polymorphism for broad jumpers was analyzed by PCR ,DNA sequencing ,Hardy‐Weinberg and SPSS ,and the results were compared with that of normal people .Results There were II ,DD and ID in gene ACE 16 ,and the Hard‐Weinberg re‐sults showed that the subjects were group representative .The ACE DD genotype and D allele in broad jumpers was statistically higher than normal controls (P<0 .05) .Conclusion The results suggest that ACE DD genotype and D allele are associated with training sensitivity of broad jumpers and could be the molecular marker for athletes choosing genetically .

RESUMEN

STUDY DESIGN: A Case report. OBJECTIVES: We report 4 cases of transverse fracture of upper sacrum with good clinical results. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: There is no clear guideline for the treatment of transverse fracture of upper sacrum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four patients, who visited our institute for transverse fracture of upper sacrum, were reviewed from January 2006 to July 2009. RESULTS: All patients had good clinical results after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: In all cases, patients were managed conservatively without reduction or internal fixation. Only for Roy-Camille type 2 and 3 transverse fracture of the upper sacrum with neurologic deficit, decompression was performed, yielding good clinical results.

RESUMEN

Displaced fractures of the upper sacrum are a rare type of high energy injury, such as a fall, with similar neurological symptoms and fracture patterns. The authors treated 4 patients with these fracture patterns surgically or conservatively and followed them up for at least 1 year. We report these 4 cases with a review of the relevant literature.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to investigate the pathologic changes of jumper's knee before and after jumping and effects of icing after jumping. Sixteen healthy college students and sixteen collegiate volleyball players with jumper's knee were divided into two groups by eight, without icing group and with icing group after jumping exercise. Without icing groups rested for 20 minutes, while with icing groups were treated with ice for 20 minutes after eighty times of jumping. Signal to noise ratio (SNR) and sectional area of patellar tendon with Magnetic Resonance Imaging and the tenderness of patellar tendon with visual analog scale were measured before and after exercise, following with or without icing and 24 and 48 hours later from the treatment. In jumper's knee group, significant increase was found in the SNR, sectional area of patellar tendon, and tenderness of patellar tendon after exercise compared to before exercise. In addition, in jumper's knee with icing group, significant decrease was found in the SNR, sectional area of patellar tendon after icing and 24 and 48 hours after icing, and the tenderness of patellar tendon after icing compared to after exercise. These results suggested that icing was an effective treatment for jumper's knee after exercise.

Side to side difference in tennis players' mid-radius and cross-sectional study on mid-tibia of jumpers and sedentary controls suggest that the improvement of mechanical properties of cortical bone in response to long-term exercise is related to geometric adaptation and not to volumetric bone mineral density. In the present study, geometric and mechanical properties of right tibia were estimated along 64 directions centering center of gravity of the bone on cross-sectional peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) images. The tibias of 17 jumpers (7 females, 10 males) and 15 controls (8 females, 7males), aged 18-23, were scanned at mid site using pQCT. Periosteal and endocortical radius were larger, cortical thickness was thicker, and mechanical properties (moment of inertia of area and strength strain index) were greater in jumpers compared to those of controls. The differences in cortical thickness between the two groups were dependent on direction of measurement. Defined a direction from tibia's center of gravity to fibula's as 0°, difference in the cortical thickness between jumpers and controls was the greatest at around 240°. Along this direction, differences in mechanical properties were also the most significant, suggesting that the site-specific adaptation of bone to long-term exercise is due to geographical relation of bone to muscle.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the jumper's knee for the symptoms and diagnostics by MRI and ultrasonography in basket ball players. METHOD: Twenty knees of 10 basketball players with chronic knee pain were assessed by the history taking, physical examination and diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography. Their average age was 17.4 years. Stanish classification is used for grading the symptoms of jumper's knee. RESULTS: Nine proximal patellar tendons were diagnosed as jumper's knees (45%) and 11 distal tendons were diagnosed as jumper's knees (55%). In ultrasonographic findings, average proximal patellar tendon thickness was 4.5 mm+/-1.2 mm, and distal patella tendon thickness was 7.1+/-1.1 mm. Sensitivity was 63% (12/19) and specificity was rated as 100% (21/21). By the MRI findings, sensitivity was rated as 32% (6/19) and specificity was rated as 90% (16/21). Study between the patient's clinical severity level by Stanish classification and thickness of patellar tendon showed no significant correlation (<0.5). CONCLUSION: The ultrasonography to be more convenient and easier as a diagnostic method for the jumper's knee than MRI.

RESUMEN

There is no sport in which the knee does not play an integral role. Blazina described the clinical aspects and treatment of the “jumper's knee”. A jumper's knee is a tendinitis of the patella or less frequently quadriceps tendon at the inferior or superior pole of the patella, respectively. It is typically encountered in athletes who are involved in some type of repetitive activity such as jumping, climbing, kicking, or running. the pathology is still ill understood and further date on the etiology and treatment are scarce. Fourty seven cases of patella tendinitis were analyzed in clinical aspects. Results of the study are as follows: l. Of the 47 cases, male were 9 or 19.1%, female were 38 or 80.9%. 2. Complained pain on proximal pole of patella were 11 or 23.4%, both pole were 9 or 19.1%, distal pole were 27 or 57.4%. 3.0f 47 cases, 22 cases or 46.8% were Grade I, 20 cases or 42.5% were Grade II, 4 cases or 8.5% were Grade III, 1 case or 2.1% was Grade IV. 4. 1 case, Grade IV, was confirmed fracture on distal pole of patella by radiologic examination. 5. The Grade I & II patients had subsided an improved by a few days rest, Quadriceps and Hamstrings setting exercise, Ice massage and medication.
