Abstract To evaluate the effects of Prenatal Exposure of Cocaine-EPC- (25 or 50 mg / kg / day) from 8-21 day of gestation, on oral cocaine use in female and male mice in early adulthood, was used the test of "free choice of two bottles" that measures the oral cocaine consumption in milliliters. This was evaluated for 14 consecutive days from the 7th week of age. Repeated measures MANOVA was used for the analysis of consumption. It was found that EPC 50mg/kg/day increased oral cocaine consumption in female and young adult male mice both in the acquisition and maintenance phases. And the EPC 25mg/kg/day increased the consumption only in the males in the maintenance phase, showing the greater susceptibility of these to the EPC, whereas the high cocaine consumption observed in the females was not dose-related, which can be attributed to situational factors. In this way, it is seen how the EPC in the two doses evaluated increases oral cocaine consumption in early adulthood in mice; the high dose (50mg / kg) the consumption of females and males and the low dose (25mg / kg) increases the consumption only in males. It is observed that the effects are related to the dose, and that males are more vulnerable to the EPC effects.

RESUMEN

Objective@#To research the variation of subgingival microorganisms after 65 μm glycine powder air-polishing (GPAP) in patients with periodontitis during periodontal maintenance phase and make comparison with conventional method.@*Methods@#From Department of Periodontology, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, twenty-one patients at the age of 35-72 (8 males and 13 females) who were systematically healthy were recruited in this study. According to splitting-mouth design, one side of a mouth was randomly assigned to the experiment group (21 patients, 248 teeth, 1 488 sites) with 65 μm GPAP therapy while the opposite side served as the control group (21 patients, 249 teeth, 1 494 sites) with ultrasonic scaling plus polishing paste therapy. The clinical periodontal parameters including probing depth (PD), bleeding index (BI), bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque index (PLI) were recorded. Using sterile currette, the subgingival plaque samples were collected at the mesio-buccal site of the first or second molars at baseline, 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after therapy, respectively. After Congo red staining, the microorganisms were classified into cocci, bacilli and spirochetes and counted respectively.@*Results@#All clinical periodontal parameters have no difference between two groups at baseline and after treatment 12 weeks. In the experiment group and the control group, PD ([2.33±0.90] and [2.37±1.18] mm), BI (0.96±0.70 and 0.98±0.78) and PLI (0.00[1.00] and 0.00[1.00]) of two groups after treatment 12 weeks were better than those at baseline (PD: [2.48±1.17] and [2.46±0.99] mm; BI: 1.07±0.72 and 1.08±0.75; PLI: 0.00 [1.00] and 0.00 [1.00]) (P<0.05). But BOP(+)% was observably reduced only in the control group after treatment 12 weeks ([17.25±2.21]% vs [25.23±2.83]%) (P<0.05). The percentages of cocci, bacilli and spirochetes were stable and there were not significant differences between the two groups (P>0.05).@*Conclusions@#After 65 μm GPAP therapy, the differences of proportion of subgingival microorganisms are not significant, while the control group has the same trend. The spirochetes remained at a low level, but they rebounded fasterly in the test group than that in the control group. The results indicate that 65 μm glycine powder air-polishing has the similar clinical effects compared with ultrasonic scaling plus polishing paste. However, the clinical indications should be limited to the patients with shallow pockets and without obvious dental calculus.

RESUMEN

The long term success of periodontal treatment is dependent upon the effectiveness of the maintenance care program after active treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether nutraceutical containing PRF-K2 as natural product from plant and seaweed has beneficial effects on clinical parameters, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) volume and GCF cytokine levels during maintenance phase after periodontal treatment. Among the generally healthy and non-smoking, moderate to severe chronic periodontitis patients during maintenance phase in Department of Periodontics, Chonnam National University Hospital, twenty eight patients took nutraceutical containing PRF-K2 (Oscotec Inc. Cheonan, Korea) for 3 months as experimental group and sixteen patients received only maintenance care as control group. Clinical examination and GCF collection were performed at baseline, 1, 2 and 3 months of experiment. Total amounts and concentrations of GCF IL-1beta, IL-1ra and PGE2 were evaluated using ELISA kit. In probing pocket depth, experimental group showed the tendency of more reduction than control group after 3 months of experiment. Sulcus bleeding index (SBI) and GCF volume were significantly decreased in experimental group(p<0.05), whereas they were increased in control group. GCF IL-1betalevel tended to decrease in both experimental and control group and IL-1ra concentration tended to increase in experimental group and to decrease in control group. IL-1ra/IL-1beta ratio tended to increase in experimental group and to decrease in control group during experimental period. GCF PGE2 amount did not show any change in experimental group and tended to increase in control group. These results suggest that nutraceutical supplement which contain PRF-K2 could improve periodontal condition during maintenance phase after periodontal therapy.

RESUMEN

Reports on the comparison of clinical effect between non-surgical and surgical therapy, and the change of the clinical parameters during maintenance phase have been rarely presented in Korea. This study was to observe the clinical changes during maintenance phase of 6 months in patients with chronic periodontitis treated by non-surgical or surgical therapy in Department of Periodontics, Chonnam National University Hospital. Among the systemically healthy and non-smoking patients with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis, twenty eight patients (mean age: 47.5 years) treated by non-surgical therapy (scaling and root planning) and nineteen patients (mean age: 47.3 years) treated by surgical therapy (flap surgery)were included in this study. The periodontal supportive therapy including recall check and oral hygiene reinforcement was started as maintenance phase since 1 month of healing after treatment. Probing depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level and tooth mobility were recorded at initial, baseline and 1, 2, 3 and 6 month of maintenance phase. The clinical parameters were compared between the non-surgical and surgical therapies using Student t-test and repeated measure ANOVA by initial probing depth and surfaces. Surgical therapy resulted in greater change in clinical parameters than non-surgical therapy. During the maintenance phase of 6 months, the clinical effects after treatment had been changed in different pattern according to initial probing depth and tooth surface. During maintenance phase, probing depth increased more and gingival recession increased less after surgical therapy, compared to non-surgical therapy. The sites of initial probing depth less than 3 mm lost more clinical attachment level, and the sites of initial probing depth more than 7 mm gained clinical attachment level during maintenance phase after non-surgical therapy, compared to surgical therapy. Non-surgical therapy resulted in greater reduction of tooth mobility than surgical therapy during maintenance phase. These results indicate that the clinical effects of non-surgical or surgical therapy may be different and may change during the maintenance phase.
