RESUMEN

Purpose: To explore straight incision technique in terms of efficacy for intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering by small-incision cataract surgery (SICS) trab versus modified 揻rown incision with triangular scleral flap technique. Methods: This study was done at a tertiary health center. It included 44 eyes diagnosed with cataract and coexisting primary glaucoma that underwent SICS with trabeculectomy using modified 揻rown incision with triangular scleral flap technique and straight incision in group A (n = 22) and B (n = 22), respectively. Postoperative evaluation was done at first postoperative day, then at the end of first week, third week, and 6 weeks; at the end of third month and finally at the end of sixth months. Data were entered and analyzed via Microsoft Excel sheet and SPSS software using Mann朩hitney U test for averages and Chi-square test for categorical values. Results: Mean preoperative IOP in groups A and B were 38.6 and 29.1 mm Hg respectively, by applanation tonometry. After 6-month follow-up, mean of difference in IOP (preoperative postoperative) for group A was 20.8 8.3 mm Hg and that for group B was 17.2 13.5 mm Hg. Conclusion: Capacity of IOP reduction of both techniques was found to be comparable and did not show much difference up to the end of 6 months. Mastering technique of group A (modified 揻rown incision with triangular scleral flap technique) requires more expertise; the simpler straight incision technique provided in group B may be effectively used by the novice and current era Ophthalmologists to combat glaucoma coexistant with cataract.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The study was conducted to calculate and compare the surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) in chevron, frown, and straight incisions in manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS). Methods: A prospective, hospital-based study was conducted on 90 patients aged 50 years and above with nuclear sclerosis of grade 4 or more. Each group had 30 patients, divided into Group V (chevron incision), Group S (straight incision), and Group F (frown incision). Patients who had with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism were operated on through a chevron or straight incision superiorly, while patients who had against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism underwent MSICS through a temporal frown incision. The patients were followed up post-operatively on days 1, 7, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks, and at each visit, the uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and SIA were calculated and compared. Results: The mean age of all the patients was 66.22 8.05 years. BCVA of at least 6/18 or better at 12 weeks post?operatively was achieved in 29 patients (97%) in Group V, 28 patients (93%) in Group F, and 29 patients (97%) in Group S. The mean SIA in Group V was 0.34D 0.22D, in Group S was 0.97D 0.29D, and in Group F was 0.575D 0.25D. Conclusion: SIA by chevron incision is the least followed by the frown incision and straight incision. The superiorly placed chevron incision in WTR astigmatism provided optimal results for the best UCVA and minimal SIA. The temporal frown incision in ATR astigmatism also had good results.

RESUMEN

Objective To establish the instability model of goat cervical vertebrae, and test biomechanical stability of the novel arc cervical titanium mesh with endplate ring. Methods The anatomical data from cervical vertebrae of adult goats were measured, so as to select a new type of arch cervical titanium mesh with endplate ring which was suitable for goat cervical vertebrae. A total of 24 goats with preserved articular capsule, ligaments and intervertebral disc were randomly divided into 4 groups. Group A (n=6, normal group) didn’t receive any special treatment, while Group B (n=6, model group) received partial resection of C4 vertebrae as well as upper and lower intervertebral disc. On the basis of models in Group B, Group C (n=6, experimental group) was installed with the novel arch cervical titanium mesh and fixed by plate and screw, and Group D (n=6,control group) was installed with traditional straight titanium mesh and fixed by plate and screw. The ranges of motion (ROMs) for 4 groups of specimens during flexion, extension, left/right lateral bending, left/right rotation under 2.0 N·m load were measured, and their three-dimensional (3D) motion stability was tested. The displacement of Group C and Group D under 200 N compression force was measured, the stiffness was calculated, and the anti settlement ability of the whole specimen was tested. Results The ROMs of Group A in all directions were smaller than those of Group B,the ROMs of Group A were larger than those of Group C, and the ROMs of Group C during flexion were smaller than those of Group D (P<0.05). The stiffness of Group C was higher than that of Group D (P<0.05).The compression displacement of Group C was smaller than that of Group D(P<0.05). Conclusions Compared with the straight titanium mesh, the novel arc titanium mesh is more consistent with the physiological curvature of cervical verebrae, and has better stability than the traditional titanium mesh during the most frequent flexion activities of cervical verebrae. Moreover, compression displacement of the novel arc titanium mesh under short-term stress is smaller than that of the straight titanium mesh, and its postoperative anti-settlement is better than that of the straight titanium mesh, which is worthy of further experiment and clinical promotion.

ABSTRACT The present research focused its efforts on discovering methodological alternatives that benefit the possibility of applying high levels of strength in the straight punch, thus favoring the probability of a victory by knockout. The working hypothesis proposed that, if exercises with a post-activation performance enhancement effect are used, the strength applied to the straight punch can be increased. This quasi-experiment aimed to determine the acute effects of post activation performance enhancement on the strength applied to the straight punch, using the bench press or the Landmine as the conditioning activity. It was worked with 20 boxers (eight professional and 12 amateur), and the population was divided into two groups, matched according to body weight. The maximum impact strength was evaluated with a load cell model WLCC01, then the maximum dynamic strength was determined for each exercise, and from this data, a load was placed to mobilize 60 % of the maximum dynamic strength, performing repetitions until the speed of the movement decreased by more than 10 %. Then, the maximum impact strength was re-evaluated. Records were taken immediately after, at one, two, three, four and five minutes. The results showed an increase of 9.3 % in the bench press group and 12.46 % in the Landmine group. It was concluded that both exercises, when used as conditioning activity, generate a significant increase (p 0.05) of the maximum impact strength in the straight punch.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In orthodontic treatment, there will be different degrees of external apical resorption. Severe root resorption will reduce the root/shoot ratio, reduce the stability of teeth, and even cause teeth to loosen and fall out. OBJECTIVE: To compare the difference of external apical root resorption between high torque self-locking bracket and traditional straight wire bracket in orthodontic treatment of bimaxillary protrusion patients. METHODS: Forty-nine patients with bimaxillary protrusion, aged 13-16 years, who were treated in the Hospital of Stomatology of Southwest Medical University from January 2016 to December 2019, were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided into the high torque self-locking bracket group (n=24) and the traditional straight wire bracket group (n=25). Cone beam CT was taken before and after orthodontic treatment. The root morphology and length of maxillary central incisors and lateral incisors were observed by CS 3D Imaging Software. The amount of external apical root resorption between maxillary incisor and lateral incisor was calculated. This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of Hospital of Stomatology of Southwest Medical University. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The two groups after orthodontic treatment had achieved a good correction effect. The course of treatment was shorter in the high torque self-locking bracket group than that in the traditional straight wire bracket group (P 0.05). In the same appliance group, the amount of external apical root resorption of the maxillary central incisors was less than the lateral incisors (P < 0.05). (4) Results indicate that compared with the traditional straight wire bracket, the high torque self-locking bracket may have the advantages of short treatment course and low risk of apical absorption in the orthodontic treatment of bimaxillary protrusion.

Idiopathic scoliosis is the abnormal flexion and rotation of the vertebral bodies, causing respiratory symptoms and altered pulmonary function. Straight back syndrome is a decreased in the anteroposterior diameter of the thorax. We present a 13-year-old patient with idiopathic scoliosis who developed progressive dyspnea, inspiratory stridor and a significant decrease in pulmonary function, because of extrinsic compression of the right main bronchus and the middle third of trachea by the thoracic vertebral bodies. She had also a decreased anteroposterior diameter of the thorax, being a determining factor in the appearance of symptoms. Surgery was performed by thoracic vertebra fixation T3 to T11, with subsequent clinical and functional respiratory improvement.Scoliosis associated with altered pulmonary function and stridor should make us suspect the existence of airway compression, especially in patients with reduction of the anteroposterior diameter of the thorax

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE@#This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects and advantages of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion treatment by transmission straight wire technique.@*METHODS@#Ninety-seven patients who received treatment for skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion at the Department of Stomatology, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from January 2012 to January 2017 were selected for this retrospective study. All these patients refused surgery. They were divided into two groups in accordance with the type of skeletal malocclusion: mild-to-moderate skeletal malocclusion group (-4°≤ANB <0°) and severe skeletal malocclusion group (-8°≤ANB<-4°). Each of the two groups was divided further into two small groups in accordance with the technique used: T group (transmission straight wire technique) and M group (MBT technique).@*RESULTS@#The crossbite of all 59 patients in the mild-to-moderate skeletal malocclusion group was successfully treated. The molars were classified as classⅠrelationship, and the facial profile improved. Significant differences were found in the values of U1/SN angle, L1/MP angle, and Lip-Diff between the T and M groups before and after the treatment (P<0.05). The extent of incisor root resorption was lighter in the T group than in the M group (P<0.05). In the severe skeletal malocclusion group, the crossbite of all 38 patients was cured or partially cured. Fourteen patients showed severe lower anterior teeth inclination (five in the T group and nine in the M group), and the profiles did not significantly improve. Significant differences were observed in the values of U1-NA value, U1/SN angle, L1-NB value, L1/MP angle, LLP, and Lip-Diff between the T and M groups before and after the treatment (P<0.05). The extent of incisor root resorption was lighter in the T group than in the M group (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Relative to the MBT technique, the transmission straight wire technique has great advantages in improving facial profile, reducing the compensatory inclination of the upper and lower anterior teeth, and reducing the risk of root resorption in the treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Side-step cutting is the most common offensive technique in the field of sports that greatly increases the risk of knee injury. However, the biomechanical performance strategies and the characteristics of lower limb joint load during the side-step cutting are not very clear. OBJECTIVE: To carry out the biomechanics test of the side-step cutting in lower limb movement strategy among college female basketball and football players, and to analyze the kinematics and dynamics parameters of the lower limbs, providing an important reference for athletes and trainers to prevent lower limb injuries, especially cruciate ligament injury. METHODS: Twelve female football and basketball players coming from a university were selected as the experimental subjects. The kinematics and dynamics parameters of the side-step cutting were acquired synchronously by using the three-dimensional dynamometer and the motion image shooting system. The relevant data were processed and analyzed by SPSS 21.0 software. The study protocol was approved by Tianjin University of Sports in China. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) Football players had greater ankle metatarsal flexion angle and hip abduction angle, maximum ankle valgus angle, knee flexion and rotation angle with knee flexion and rotation angle changes. (2) Football players had greater peak ankle rotation and hip adduction moment, while basketball players had larger plantar flexion moment. (3) Basketball players have smaller first and second peak values of forward and backward partial braking force, the first peak value of vertical partial braking force and larger peak value of forward and backward partial pushing force. In the process of side-step cutting, football players are accustomed to stop in a sudden way with their forefeet touching, thus producing higher ground reaction force and increasing knee flexion angle to buffer, while having greater ankle valgus angle and knee rotation angle. Basketball players have smaller knee flexion angle in the process of side-step cutting. A smaller angle is not conducive to the lower limb joint to buffer the ground reaction force, and then increases the risk of anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Abstract At present, there are different ways of approaching Class III malocclusion, all of which have the main objective of solving malocclusion and are aimed at diagnosing and bringing the patient to a stable, aesthetic occlusion and above all without any damage to the tissues that make up the Stomatognatic system. This paper deals with the handling of Class III malocclusion with Multiloop Edgewise Arch Wire (MEAW) as a fast, stable and excellent choice for solving this type of discrepancy. Class III malocclusion can be treated in different ways such as early treatment, den tal compensation, skeletal camouflage and surgical option. The dental compensation can be of different forms, as for example: extractions of lower premolars, negative inferior torque and superior positive, with the aid of skeletal anchorage (TAD) and many more that are not stated. In cases, involving facial profile or symmetry and its origin is the characteristics of ADF (Maxillofacial Dentocranial Anomaly) require orthognathic surgery for its solution, since it is of skeletal origin and due to severity is not compensable. This article shows a different management as an option for class III malocclusion compensation. It is a clinical case report of a patient of the Orthodontics Postgraduate of the Antonio Nariño University of the straight arch clinic handled with MBT Gemini Unitek 3M slot 0.022 "x0.025" brackets which are placed with Multiloop Edgewise Arch arcs Wire (MEAW) after eight months of treatment, four months in alignment and leveling, and four months of use Multiloop Edgewise Arch Wire (MEAW) correction is corrected by bilateral canine and molar retraction by rotating the plane Of occlusion according to the philosophy of the treatment of Mul tiloop Edgewise Arch Wire (MEAW) obtaining the six keys of the Andrews occlusion.

RESUMEN

Objective • To optimize the method of the flow cytometry MoFlo Astrios EQ on single-cell sorting in 96-well plate. Methods • Using different aperture nozzles and sorting ways, the 32D, U937, iBMDM and 293T cells were used for single-cell sorting after the precise adjustment of the instrument and various parameters. The hole numbers with single cell and single-cell clones were detected after sorting. Results • In the single-cell sorting mode, the hole numbers with single cell were 83-91 by 70 μm nozzle and 87-93 by 100 μm nozzle. After 7-10 days of culture, the hole numbers with single-cell clones were 36-58 by 70 μm nozzle. In 100 μm nozzle, the hole numbers with single-cell clones were 53-78 by electrostatic charge sorting and 69-81 by straight-down sorting, respectively. Conclusion • In single-cell sorting, a better cell viability and higher cloning rate are observed in 100 μm nozzle and straight-down sorting.

RESUMEN

Objective To investigate the application of the cross-sectional area ratio of internal jugular vein and common carotid artery (IJV/CCA) in the evaluating the volume responsiveness of critically ill patients. Methods The capacity of critically ill patients were prospectively assessed. The diameter and sectional area of the IJV and CCA were measured by bedside ultrasonography. The cross-sectional area ratio of IJV/CCA was calculated and compared with the variety of cardiac output (ΔCO) after passive leg raising (PLR). Then the correlation index between the cross-sectional area ratio of IJV/CCA and ΔCO was evaluated, and the sensitivity and specificity parameters of capacity status were assessed by the cross-sectional area ratio of IJV/CCA. Results Of 55 critically ill patients in this study, 34 cases had positive volume responsiveness, and 21 case negative volume responsiveness. The general clinical data of the two groups had no statistically significant difference. The cross-sectional area ratio of IJV/CCA in the positive group was significantly less than that of the negative group (1.38±0.55 vs. 2.16±0.68, P<0.01). There was a significant correlation between the IJV/CCA cross-sectional area ratio and the ΔCO value of PLR (r=-0.67, P<0.01). When the ratio of the cross-sectional area of IJV/CCA was 1.65, the sensitivity of the assessment capacity was 86.4% and the specificity was 78.8%. Conclusions The use of portable bedside ultrasonography is a noninvasive, convenient and reliable method to evaluate the capacity state of the critically ill patients.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study compared the different sling and resistance exercises on pelvic rotation during active straight leg raises (ASLR) and on pain in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). METHODS: Twenty subjects were divided randomly into a sling group (SG) and a resistance exercise group (REG). Internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), rectus abdominis (RA), and rectus femoris (RF) muscle activity; pelvic rotation angle during ASLR; and visual analogue scale, pressure pain threshold were measured. Sling and resistance exercises were then performed for 30 minutes and the measurements taken again. RESULTS: Both groups showed significantly lower RF muscle activity and significantly higher EO and IO muscle activity (p < 0.05). The RA muscle activity decreased significantly in the SG, but increased significantly in the REG (p < 0.05). The pelvic rotation angle was significantly lower in the SG (p < 0.05). The pain press threshold increased significantly in both groups (p < 0.05). The visual analogue scale decreased significantly in the SG (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Both exercises appear to be beneficial for modifying the muscle activity and pain control in the intervention of CLBP. On the other hand, the sling was more effective in increasing the pressure threshold than resistance exercise, and the pelvic rotation angle was reduced. Therefore, both exercises can help patients with CLBP change their muscle activity and control pain. CLBP patients should use a sling for short periods of time to learn to reduce the pain and control pelvic rotation.
