RESUMEN

Prevalence, pattern, and prognosis of tetanus was studied in 100 admitted patients in Civil Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad between January 1992 to October, 1995. Tetanus was found to be more common in men and was more prevalent in summer. Survival of our tetanus patients was comparable with various centres equipped with intensive therapeutic supports, Prevention campaign need to be enforced to enhance mainly status of the community

RESUMEN

The neonatal tetanus, toxi-infection to clostridium tetani, is the most dangerous clinical shape of tetanus. It's dignosis is purely clinical. The therapy has been progressing thanks to the modern equipment in the reanimation service which makes it possible to cure some dangerous cases. In developed countries, the rate of this disease has become rare, but it is a high one in developing countries. In Mornoco, the frequency of neonatal tetanus was obviously reduced thanks to the generalization of vaccination and to the prevention system. In fact, the yearly number of the cases declaring in the country in 1995 [14 cases] is eight time lower than the one declared in 1985 [104 cases]

RESUMEN

Tetanus is a serious problem which follows injuries, accidents, surgery, injections and sometimes no obvious cause. In civilized communities it has been almost eradicated with adequate immunization. Illiteracy, poverty and lack of awareness are the main reasons for higher incidence of tetanus in third world countries. Proper immunization of the whole population, adequate management of injuries and by adopting the hygienic measures we can get rid of this highly fatal but preventable disease

RESUMEN

Tetanus is caused by the spore forming gram positive, anaerobic organism clostridium tetani. It is a well known killer in neonates. In Islamabad this disease is especially seen in its Katchi Abadis. Over the past three years 88 patients of neonatal tetanus were admitted to the Children's Hospital, PIMS, out of which we were able to save sixty eight. Advanced and sophisticated techniques like intermittent positive pressure ventilation and endotracheal intubation helped to save patients who would probably have died if these facilities were not available. These measures are not available in most of the hospitals in a poor country like Pakistan. It is felt that, under the circumstances, a preventive programme consisting of immunization of women of child bearing age would be a more practicable and cost effective solution
