RESUMEN

This was a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study of 400 healthcare professionals recruited from primary healthcare centres in northern Jordan between April and October 2015. The questionnaire included questions about smoking behaviour, risks, opinions and providing anti-smoking counselling. More than 80% of participants reported that smoking-free policies were not enforced at primary healthcare centres. Compared to hospitals and the general population, smoking was less prevalent among primary healthcare professionals and more prevalent in men. More than 90% of participants believed that smoking was dangerous and associated with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Around 92% believed that they should set a good example to patients by not smoking and advise them about smoking cessation. Only 15.3% of participants felt well prepared when counselling patients about smoking and 92.8% believed that they needed training. This study suggests that primary healthcare professionals should act as anti-smoking role models after receiving professional training

RESUMEN

Although HIV counselling and testing (HCT) service plays important roles in prevention and control of AIDS; many young Nigerians under-utilize it. A peer education intervention was implemented to promote use of HCT among secondary school students and apprentices in Ibadan; Nigeria. Baseline data were collected from 1281 students from six schools and 100 apprentice workshops in four Local Government Areas of Ibadan. A total of 897 students from four schools and apprentices from 25 workshops were assigned as experimental group while 682 students from two schools and apprentices from 25 workshops were the controls. Three intervention activities were implemented: a one-day sensitization workshop for 31 apprentice instructors and 20 secondary school teacher-supervisors; training of 75 students and 46 apprentices as Peer Educators (PE); and development of Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) materials including posters and handbills. Six months after implementing these interventions; a follow-up survey was conducted to assess the effects of the PE on young person's knowledge of HIV and HCT and reported use of HCT services. Follow-up data were collected from 760 respondents from the experimental sites and 298 from the control areas using the same questionnaire administered during the baseline survey. PE educated a total of 1;917 persons with information on HIV/HCT-related issues. In addition; at follow-up; records of use of HCT services were obtained from two HCT centres situated in the experimental sites and one from the control. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The results showed significant increase in knowledge of HCT among experimental (1.3 to 7.5) (p0.05) and control groups (0.6 to 6.8) (p0.05) at follow-up. At baseline; 29.0% of the experimental and 36.0% of control knew of the location of a HCT centre; at follow-up the percentage of experimental groups who could do so increased to 62.0%; while the number dropped to 34.0% among controls. Records at HCT centres showed that a greater number (309) of experimental groups used HCT services than control (43). PE were successful in influencing behaviour of their peers to use HCT services

This paper discusses the formation of counselors in HIV / AIDS, requirement of the Ministry of Health for health professionals to develop this practice among users seeking HIV testing. To addressing training is strategic to qualify their practice, building more efficient and effective responses to AIDS. Analyses of manuals of the ministry and interviews with advisors, conducted within a research thesis (in progress), subsidize the discussion. From the analyses of textbooks are highlighted the concept of subjectivity-identity, as a relentless brand defined by the user's sexual practices, and prescriptive and directive trend in recommendations for professionals. From the analysis of interviews, we highlight the identified advising ways - education and respect. These findings add to the reflections on the advice - treated as health device and non material production in the context of reflections on the world of labor in capitalist societies. It is suggested that counseling tends to be captured by the commodity perspective, the close association between scientific and economic rationality in the health field. This arrangement is supported by the still hegemonic ideology in biomedical health practices. To escape this direction, it is suggested critical positioning for counselors in conducting their work, avoiding directive and protocol posture. The counseling-relationship is presented as an alternative advisory way by using lightweight technologies, aligned relationships, respect for differences and the role of the user in his own care. Finally, propositions (principles and contents) are presented to conduct training processes towards relationship-advice.

(HTLV I / II) e identificar as facilidades / dificuldades na realização desta avaliação.

It is a qualitative research aimed to analyze the opinion of health professionals at the Testing and Counseling Center/ Specialized Attention Service (TCC/ EAS) comparing to advise provided to people living with human T-lymphotropic human type I and II (HTLV I / II) and identify the facilities/difficulties in implementing such advice. It was held in Santo Antonio de Jesus/Bahia/Brazil, in the CTA/SAE, with eight health professionals as informants. The strategy for collecting information was a semi-structured interview guided by a script. The information from the interviews was analyzed using thematic content analysis as proposed by Minayo. Ethics permeated the entire research process, according to Resolution 196/96 of the National Health Results. The results showed that the completion of counseling is usually compromised by limited information about HTLV. It is necessary to create a training program for HTLV, thus allowing the creation of multipliers of information, encouraging the knowledge of serological status, promoting prevention and reducing the infection rate.

RESUMEN

Chronic renal failure is becoming one of the most impacting diseases on the Egyptian population, alongside with cardiovascular and hepatic diseases, diabetes mellitus and cancers. Studies support the importance of dietary management on different aspects related to end-stage renal failure [ESRF] and other studies also suggest that active nutritional counselling can improve certain important biochemical parameters and fluid overload problems in patients on maintenance haemodialysis [HD]. To assess the effect of dietary counselling on the overall health status of ESRF patients subjected to haemodialysis, particularly their renal functions. A pretest-posttest study was conducted through several phases; Phase 1: Pre-intervention assessment using; an interview questionnaire to collect socio-demographic, nutritional knowledge and dietary pattern data; Malnutrition Inflammation Score [MIS]; Karnofsky Performance Scale [KPS] and anthropometric measurements. Phase 2: Implementation of nutritional counselling sessions communicating evidence-based practices. All patients were given one-to-one nutritional counselling over a six-month period. Phase 3: Post-intervention reassessment of patients using phase one tools. A sex-stratified random sample of about 50% of all patients attending El-Harem Centre for Dialysis [82] during the period from October, 1[st] 2008 till March, 31[st] 2009 were included. Intervention participants totalled 41 ESRF patients. In this study, 97.5% of patients were considered mildly to moderately malnourished. Multiple malnutrition problems detected among these patients were protein-energy malnutrition, hypocalcaemia, anaemia and hyperphosphataemia. Nutritional counselling sessions resulted in statistically significant changes in the Malnutrition Inflammation Score [MIS] and Karnofsky Performance Scale [KPS] of the patients, the patients' nutrition related knowledge and to some extent their dietary practice. Providing one-to-one nutritional counselling is an effective intervention that can improve the ESRF patients' nutrition related knowledge and practice as well as their compliance to the dietary guidelines for the dialysis patients, which in turn can improve their health status and daily performance

RESUMEN

In developing countries, the study of intellectual disability has enormous knowledge gaps, especially in the areas of intervention, utilization of services and legislation. This article provides information not only for aiding in the potential development of sexuality in individuals with intellectual disability, but also for fostering their social integration. In Mexico and the region, in order to develop educational interventions for promoting sexual health, it is necessary to consider the following priorities: a) mental health professionals should have the knowledge or receive training for carrying out a sexual education and counseling program; b) educational interventions for subjects with intellectual disability should be adapted for the different stages of life (childhood, adolescence and adulthood); c) during childhood, educational intervention should emphasize the concept of public and private conducts; d) in adolescence, intervention should consider the actual mental age and not the chronological age of the subjects receiving intervention; e) the expression of sexuality in the adult with intellectual disability depends on the early incorporation of factors for promoting social inclusion; f) for educational interventions to be successful, it is fundamental that sexual educators and counselors, in addition to working with the clients, also work with their parents and other close family members; g) intervention programs should establish development objectives for developing in persons with intellectual disability a positive attitude towards sexuality and the improvement in self-esteem; h) in subjects with intellectual disability, their linguistic comprehension level should be taken into consideration and techniques for open discussion and non-inductive education should be used; i) social integration programs should address the needs of developing countries and their individuals, since it is not feasible to import external programs...

The first section discusses the meaning of counselling; as well as the different types of counselling which exist. Section two looks at the place of counselling as a strategy in the overall national programmes against HIV/AIDS; and the settings in which it takes place. Section three deals with what emerged as a major component of the counselling strategy: training. The fourth section looks at some of the innovatory strategies of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in counselling for HIV/AIDS. In section five; the constraints faced by those dealing with HIV/AIDS counselling are discussed; while section six deals with the controversial issue of confidentiality and its relationship to counselling

RESUMEN

Counselling was established as one of the major components of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) in the Medium Term Plan (MTP) running from 1989 to 1993. The overall aim of counselling is to help initiate and maintain appropriate behaviour change in the general population and certain target groups. In the absence of a cure or vaccine for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which causes the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS); counselling has assumed great importance both as a prevention and a care strategy. Counselling enables individuals; their families and the community at large to deal and cope with AIDS-related problems effectively

RESUMEN

Finding out one's own serostatus is a problem but it is a greater problem when one tests HIV+. The immediate feeling is loneliness; who to tell next? What will be the implication to my family? It becomes another sickness. In Uganda; a self help project focusing on shared care for PWA has been set up under the umbrella of Philly Lutaya Initiative (PLI). Description: PLI was set up four years ago with the following objectives:1. To give AIDS a human face. 2. Bring together PWAs to share experiences and support each other. 3. Build working capacity among PWAs. 4. Educate the community through life experienced. Many members of Philly Lutaya have pernalised the feeling of being HIV+ i.e. copping and acceptance of the problem. Being HIV+ has been used as an entry point to draw attention to educate the community; minimise stigma and descrimination. The sensitised communities have developed positive attitudes to PWAs and this gives positive people continously upheld the morale of PWAs. If funds can allow; more PWAs initiatives should be implemented in other districts of the country
