RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To validate the feasibility of real time kinematography with four-dimensional (4D) dynamic functional wrist joint imaging using dual source CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two healthy volunteers performed radioulnar deviation and pronation-supination wrist motions for 10 s and 4 s per cycle in a dual source CT scanner. Scan and reconstruction protocols were set to optimize temporal resolution. Cine images of the reconstructed carpal bone of the moving wrist were recorded. The quality of the images and radiation dosage were evaluated. RESULTS: The 4D cine images obtained during 4 s and 10 s of radioulnar motion showed a smooth stream of movement with good quality and little noise or artifact. Images from the pronation-supination motion showed noise with a masked surface contour. The temporal resolution was optimized at 0.28 s. CONCLUSION: Using dual source CT, 4D cine images of in vivo kinematics of wrist joint movement were obtained and found to have a shorter scan time, improved temporal resolution and lower radiation dosages compared with those previously reported.

RESUMEN

Background and Objectives: Aim of this study was to determine the validity of cervical vertebrae radiographic assessment to predict skeletal maturation. Materials and Methods: Left-hand wrist and lateral cephalometric radiographs of 100 Bangalore children aged 8-18 years, divided into 10 groups of 10 subjects each with equal distribution of males and females, were measured. On left-hand wrist radiograph, the classification of Fishman was used to assess skeletal maturation. Cervical vertebrae maturation was evaluated with lateral cephalometric radiograph, using the stages developed by Hassel and Farman. The changes in hand wrist and cervical vertebrae were correlated. Results: Significant association was observed between skeletal maturation indicator stages and cervical vertebrae maturation indicator stages. Correlation coefficient was found to be significant (P<0.0001). Conclusion: The results of the study indicated that the cervical vertebrae maturation and hand wrist skeletal maturation was significantly related.

RESUMEN

The traditional methods of skeletal age estimation mainly include Numeration, Atlas, and Counting scores. In recent years, other new methods were proposed by several scholars. Utilizing image logical characteristics of X-ray film to extrapolate skeletal age is a key means by present forensic medicine workers in evaluating skeletal age. However, there exist some variations when we present the conclusion of skeletal age as an "evidence" directly to the Justice Trial Authority. In order to enhance the accuracy of skeletal age determination, further investigation for appropriate methodology should be undertaken. After a collective study of pertinent domestic and international literatures, we present this review of the research and advancement on skeletal age evaluation methods of X-ray film.

RESUMEN

The assessment of age is an important facet in providing information in demographic studies and is of clinical use to diagnose and plan the treatment. The objective of this study was to determine whether the standards of dental maturation given by Demirjian et al are applicable to Davangere children and to assess the relationship between the obtained dental age and skeletal age. The study group comprised of 151 healthy children of 6-15 years age. It was found that Davangere children were dentally more advanced. Demirjians method gave an over estimation of 1.20 +/- 1.02 years and 0.90 +/- 0.87 years in males and females respectively. The obtained dental age was found to be different from the skeletal age. It may be concluded that Demirjians method of dental maturation is not applicable to the children of Davangere.

RESUMEN

The hand with its numerous secondary centers in phalanges and metacarpals and the wrist with its tightly packed primary centers are useful for the purpose of recording progress of skeletal maturation and in identification. This study aimed to establish both a chronological sequence of postnatal skeletal maturation in the Egyptian children and the intersexual differences. In this study, 156 radiographic plates of the hand and wrist in posteroanterior projection of the Egyptian children between 1-13 years of age. All cases were free from any pathological conditions that could alter the normal skeletal development. The ossification centers studied in each case, corresponded to the distal epiphysis of ulna and radius, the campus, the metacarpals and the phalanges. It was found that there was a significant differences in mean [Ba] between girls and boys at 9 and 11 years where girls showed significantly higher mean [Ba] than boys. The difference between [Ba] and [Ca] was a negative value in more males than females. A detailed and ordered study of ossification center of each bone of the hand and wrist was made and the intersexual differences were demonstrated. The [Ba] and [Ca] was related statistically and the results was represented graphically. A high statistical correlation between the two variables was found. Standards representing the length of metacarpal bones and phalanges were obtained. Girls have significantly longer second metacarpal bone than boys in all age groups except at 1 and 9 years of age. Males have significally higher mean total diameter of second metacarpal than females in all age groups from 1 to 10 years except at the age of 5 years

RESUMEN

Skeletal age of 50 football players participating in the Asian Junior Youth Tournament was assessed in an attempt to verify their stated chronological age to have a fair competition. Roentgenograms of hand and wrist (Greulich - Pyle standards), ilium and ischium were used for evaluation. More than half of the players had a bone age over the 16 year age limit of the Tournament and 30 percent of them had reached the maximum skeletal maturity of 19 years of age or over. Skeletal age is a reliable and dependable guide for assessing the physical maturity in this age group provided that proper local or international standards are set up.
