Resumen Introducción: Los protistas del género Labyrinthula causan la denominada "Enfermedad del desgaste" en el pasto marino, Thalassia testudinum. Desde el 2008 los monitoreos en el Caribe colombiano han mostrado variación espacial y temporal en la incidencia de la enfermedad, pero sin la alta mortalidad observada en otras regiones del mundo. Objetivo: Analizar algunos parámetros epidemiológicos en T. testudinum y comparar metabolitos entre plantas sanas e infectadas. Métodos: Registramos la severidad, incidencia y prevalencia de esta enfermedad en el Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona e Isla de Providencia, y analizamos muestras de agua y sedimentos. Además, aplicamos cromatografía líquida y de gases, junto con espectrometría de masas, a extractos metanólicos de muestras de hojas y rizomas de brotes sanos e infectados. Resultados: Las praderas se encontraban en buen estado, a pesar de la escasez de brotes de fanerógamas marinas en Tayrona y una alta incidencia (15 %) y severidad (355 %) de la enfermedad en Providencia. Las plantas infectadas tenían niveles más bajos de fenoles, flavonoides y azúcares. Las flavonas sulfatadas con aglicona luteolina y diosmetina, los esteroles (sitosterol y estigmasterol) y las oxilipinas volátiles se acumularon en las hojas (3-hidroxi-2-isopentanona) y los ácidos isopentanoico y octadecatrienoico en los rizomas. Conclusiones: Estos pastos marinos colombianos tienen producción diferencial de metabolitos. Probablemente como una defensa exitosa, aún a niveles bajos de severidad (0.1 %) e incidencia (1 %) de la enfermedad.


Abstract Introduction: Protists of the genus Labyrinthula cause the so-called "Wasting Disease" in seagrass, Thalassia testudinum. Monitoring in the Colombian Caribbean since 2008 has shown spatial and temporal variation in the disease's incidence, but without the high mortality observed in other regions of the world. Objective: To analyze some epidemiological parameters in T. testudinum and to compare metabolites between healthy and infected plants. Methods: We recorded severity, incidence and prevalence of this disease in Tayrona National Natural Park and Providencia Island, and we analyze water and sediment samples. Additionally, we applied gas and liquid chromatography, coupled with mass spectrometry, to methanolic extracts from leaf and rhizome samples of healthy and infected shoots. Results: The meadows were in good condition, despite the scarce seagrass shoots in Tayrona and a high incidence (15 %) and severity (35.5 %) of the disease in Providencia. Infected plants had lower levels of phenols, flavonoids and sugars. Sulphated flavones with aglycone luteolin and diosmetin, sterols (sitosterol and stigmasterol) and volatile oxylipins are accumulated in leaves (3-hydroxy-2-isopentanone) and isopentaenoic and octadecatrienoic acids in rhizomes. Conclusions: These Colombian seagrasses have differential production of metabolites. Probably as a successful defense, even at low levels of severity (0.1 %) and incidence (1 %) of the disease.

Aquatic plants and the epiphytic microorganisms are important contributors to the purification of constructed wetlands. Taking the dragon-shaped water system of Beijing Olympic Park as a model, this study analyzed the structure and function of the microbial communities reside the sediment, the water body and the rhizosphere and phyllosphere of three submerged plants-Vallisneria natans, Myriophyllum verticillatum, and Potamogeton pectinatus using high-throughput sequencing technology. The results showed that the microbial diversity from the highest to the lowest were samples from sediment, plant rhizosphere, plant phyllosphere and water. The microbial diversity of plant phyllosphere samples were significantly higher than those of the water body. LEfSe analysis showed that different habitats enriched different microbial groups. The sediments mainly enriched anaerobic microbes, while the water body and the phyllosphere of plants mainly enriched aerobic microbes, and the rhizosphere of plants had the both. Functional prediction analysis showed that the abundance of denitrification marker genes in phyllosphere samples was higher than that in samples from rhizosphere, sediment and water body, and the abundance of denitrification marker genes in phyllosphere samples of M. verticillatum and P. pectinatus was higher than that of V. natans. This study could serve as a guidance for the selection of submerged plants and functional microorganisms for constructed wetlands.

Abstract Seagrass beds are an important ecosystem on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. At Cahuita National Park (CNP) a seagrass bed at Perezoso has been monitored continually since 1999 within the CARICOMP program. Thalassia testudinum is the dominant seagrass species, in some cases mixed with Syringodium filiforme. The results from the 2009 to 2015 monitoring period are presented here, and contrasted with data before 2009. Total (above and below ground tissue) mean biomass of T. testudinum was higher (1 255.4 ± 146.0 gm-2) than biomass before 2009, with an increasing tendency. However, productivity (1.5±0.59 gm-2d-1) and turnover rate (4.3 ± 1.22 %d-1) were lower than previous monitoring periods. In this period, mean leaf area diminished considerably (4.9 ± 2.30 m2), but leaf area index (LAI) increased (1.9 ± 0.80 m2leafm-2) in comparison to prior monitoring. Productivity, density, turnover rate, LAI and biomass showed intra-annual variations; while mean biomass of T. testudinum did not vary significantly among years. No correlations were found between water salinity, temperature and clarity with seagrass measurements. However, most seagrass parameters were strongly correlated with precipitation. These results highlight the effect of external environmental agents acting on the ecosystem. CNP presents a long-term stable seagrass meadow. However, there are indirect signals, such as high biomass and above-ground biomass proportion, along with low productivity and LAI, which point to a nutrient increment in Perezoso's seagrass bed. To continue protecting this seagrass bed, it is necessary to improve monitoring methods, and seagrass beds should be included in national conservation policies and monitoring programs. Rev. Biol. Resumen Los lechos de pastos marinos son un ecosistema importante en la costa caribeña de Costa Rica. En el Parque Nacional Cahuita (PNC), un lecho de pastos marinos en Perezoso ha sido monitoreado continuamente desde 1999 dentro del programa CARICOMP. Thalassia testudinum es la especie dominante, en algunos casos mezclada con Syringodium filiforme. Se presentan los resultados del período de monitoreo del 2009 al 2015. La biomasa promedio de T. testudinum fue mayor (1 255.4 ± 146.0 gm-2) que la biomasa antes de 2009, mostrando una tendencia creciente. Sin embargo, la productividad (1.5 ± 0.59 gm-2d-1) y la tasa de recambio (4.3 ± 1.22 %d-1) fueron inferiores a los períodos de monitoreo previos. En este período, el área foliar media disminuyó considerablemente (4.9 ± 2.30 m2), pero el Índice de Área Foliar (LAI) aumentó (1.9 ± 0.80 m2 hoja m-2) en comparación con el monitoreo previo. El promedio de la productividad, la densidad, la tasa de recambio, el LAI y la biomasa mostraron variaciones intra-anuales, mientras que la biomasa promedio de T. testudinum no varió significativamente entre los años, lo que representa un período estable. Ningún parámetro del agua de mar (salinidad, temperatura o turbiedad) se correlacionó con los parámetros del pasto marino. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los parámetros del pasto marino estaban fuertemente correlacionados con la precipitación. Estos resultados ponen en evidencia el efecto de factores ambientales externos sobre el ecosistema. El PNC tiene condiciones estables a largo plazo en las que se establece el pasto marino sin que haya evidencia de pérdida de biomasa. Sin embargo, hay señales indirectas; como el aumento de la biomasa y de la proporción de biomasa sobre el sustrato, así como una baja productividad y LAI; que apuntan a un incremento de nutrientes en el lecho de pastos marinos de Perezoso. Para continuar protegiendo este lecho marino, es necesario mejorar la calidad del agua y los métodos de monitoreo, además de incluir a estos hábitats en las políticas nacionales de conservación.

Abstract This study evaluated the feeding preference of the invasive mollusk Melaniudes tuberculata between the aquatic macrophytes Egeria densa and Chara indica. The experiment consisted of twelve experimental units (glass aquariums) each of which contained three liters of water and three compartments. Fragments of E. densa and C. indica were placed in separate compartments within each unit; the third compartment, which did not contain macrophytes, was used as the control. Twenty Melanoides tuberculata individuals were placed in each unit and monitored hourly over the course of 24 hours for preferential movements. Physical and chemical water variables were measured at the beginning and end of the experiment. Habitat complexity was determined through collected macrophyte fragments and determined using the Fractop program. After 24 hours, the highest average number of individuals was observed in the treatment with Chara indica (ten individuals), which differed significantly from the treatment with E. densa (four individuals) and the control treatment (two individuals). The number of individuals between the E. densa and control treatment were similar. M. tuberculata showed a clear feeding preference for C. indica.


Resumo O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a preferência do molusco invasor M. tuberculata pelas macrófitas aquáticas Egeria densa e Chara indica. Doze unidades experimentais (aquários de vidro), com dimensões de 30×15×15 cm, subdivida em três compartimentos foram utilizadas. Em cada unidade experimental foram adicionados três litros de água, sendo que em dois compartimentos foram adicionados aleatoriamente fragmentos de E. densa e C. indica e um compartimento ficou sem planta (controle). Na parte central do aquário foram adicionados os moluscos equidistantes dos três compartimentos. O experimento teve duração de 24 horas, sendo vistoriado e contabilizado o número de organismos presentes em cada compartimento a cada hora. As variáveis ambientais foram medidas no inicio e fim do experimento. Fragmentos de macrófitas foram coletados para determinação da complexidade do habitat através do programa Fractop. Após 24 horas, os resultados mostraram um maior valor médio de indivíduos no tratamento que possuía Chara indica (dez indivíduos), que diferiu significativamente do tratamento com E. densa (quatro indivíduos) e do tratamento controle (dois indivíduos). Os tratamentos com E. densa e o controle foram semelhantes entre si evidenciando, uma possível preferência do molusco por a C. indica.

Abstract:The marine angiosperm Thalassia testudinum, commonly known as turtle grass, is a dominant sea- grass that grows in the Caribbean Sea shelf associated to Syringodium filiforme. The hydroalcoholic extract of T. testudinum is rich in polyphenols; the most abundant metabolite in this extract is thalassiolin B, a glycosilated flavonoid with skin damage repairing properties, and antioxidant capacity among others. The present study aimed at generating information about the seasonal behavior of secondary metabolites, as well as to study the antioxidant capacity of the T. testudinum leaves extract, collected monthly during 2012 from the Northeast coastline of Havana, Cuba. For this study, spectrophotometric methods were used to determine the concentrations of polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, soluble carbohydrates and proteins, chlorophylls a and b, and antioxidant activity of the extracts. In general, results demonstrated seasonal variations of the analyzed parameters. Extracts prepared from the vegetal material collected in October and November showed the highest values of polyphenols (58.81 ± 1.53 and 52.39 ± 0.63 mg/g bs, respectivally) and flavonoids (44.12 ± 1.30 and 51.30 ± 0.67 mg/g dw, respectively). On the contrary, the lowest values of polyphenols were found in extracts of leaves collected in July and August (15.51 ± 0.84 and 13.86 ± 0.48 mg/g, respectively). In accordance with these results, the lower value of Inhibitory Concentration (IC50) was obtained to get a 50 % of maximal effect on free radical scavenging activity with the extracts prepared from leaves collected in October and November, and less significant IC50 was obtained from the extract prepared from leaves collected in August (5.63 mg/mL). A negative correlation (r= -0.694) was observed in this study between the content of polyphenols and the IC50 necessary to get the half of its antioxidant maximal effect. The high correspondence between the maximum values of polyphenols, flavonoids, carbohydrates and proteins in October and November, revealed a close relationship between these metabolites found in the extract of T. testudinum. Our hypothesis about the annual variation in the concentration of these metabolites was validated; and these results will support the correct harvesting of T. testudinum leaves for biotechnology and industrial purposes. Resumen:La angiosperma marina Thalassia testudinum, comúnmente conocida como "hierba tortuga", es un pasto marino dominante que crece en el Mar Caribe asociada a Syringodium filiforme. El extracto hidroalcohólico de T. testudinum es rico en polifenoles; el metabolito más abundante en este extracto es thalassiolina B, un flavonoide glicosilado con propiedades para la reparación de daños en la piel y la capacidad antioxidante, entre otros. El objetivo del presente estudio fue conocer el comportamiento estacional de los metabolitos secundarios, así como la capacidad antioxidante del extracto de hojas de T. testudinum recolectadas mensualmente durante el 2012, en la costa noreste de La Habana, Cuba. Para este estudio fueron empleados métodos espectrofotométricos para la determinación de la concentración de polifenoles, flavonoides, carbohidratos y proteínas solubles, clorofilas a y b y la actividad antioxidante del extracto. En sentido general, los resultados demostraron las variaciones estacionales de los parámetros analizados; los extractos preparados a partir de material vegetal recolectado en octubre y noviembre mostraron los mayores valores de polifenoles y flavonoides (44.12 ± 1.30 y 51.30 ± 0.67 mg/g bs respectivamente) y se encontraron los valores más bajos en los extractos de hojas recolectadas en julio y agosto. (15.51 ± 0.84 y 13.86 ± 0.48 mg/g respectivamente). De acuerdo con los resultados, se obtuvo el valor más bajo de la concentración inhibitoria (CI50 ) necesaria para obtener un 50 % de efecto máximo en la actividad de captación de radicales libres con los extractos preparados a partir de las hojas recolectadas en octubre y noviembre y la CI50 menos significativa se obtuvo a partir del extracto preparado a partir de las hojas recolectadas en agosto (5.63 mg/ml). Se observó una correlación negativa (r= -0,694) entre el contenido de polifenoles y la CI50 necesaria para obtener la mitad del efecto antioxidante máximo. La alta correspondencia que existe entre los valores máximos de polifenoles, flavonoides, carbohidratos y proteínas en octubre y noviembre reveló una estrecha relación entre estos metabolitos, encontrados en el extracto de T. testudinum. La hipótesis de la variación anual de la concentración de estos metabolitos fue validada. Estos resultados se tendrán en cuenta con el fin de seleccionar el momento de recolecta de las hojas de T. testudinum para su uso con fines biotecnológicos e industriales.

ResumenLos pastos marinos son ambientes costeros que se han visto amenazados por el incremento de las actividades humanas. Alterando de forma negativa los procesos y servicios ambientales que presentan, así como la disminución de praderas. El objetivo es generar conocimiento de la distribución, estado de la estructura y nivel de fragmentación en dos arrecifes del Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano (PNSAV). Se eligieron dos praderas en arrecifes con características distintas: Sacrificios en el Norte que se encuentra cerca de la costa y Cabezo en el Sur que está alejado de la costa. Se determinaron las características específicas de haz y área de las praderas de macrófitas sumergidas presentes e identificaron cuatro grupos de cobertura morfofuncionales. Se comprobaron diferencias significativas entre coberturas (ANOVA no paramétrico, prueba de Kruskal-Wallis). Se realizó una clasificación supervisada de una imagen espacial de alta resolución verificada con datos de campo (55 Sacrificios y 290 Cabezo). El nivel de fragmentación se calculó usando métricas de paisaje a nivel de clase y se realizaron mapas temáticos en función de las cuatro coberturas. Las praderas se encuentran dominadas por Thalassia testudinum; se tuvieron densidades máximas de 208 haces/m2 para Cabezo y 176 haces/m2 en Sacrificios. Cabezo presentó pastos de hojas cortas (9 cm) y delgadas (0.55 cm) en promedio; Sacrificios tuvo hojas más largas (23.5 cm) y gruesas (1 cm). Sacrificios mostró menor grado de fragmentación que Cabezo; en ambos casos la fragmentación de la cobertura vegetal corresponde a menos del 50 %. Aunque el arrecife Cabezo presenta una mayor fragmentación, que crea un gran número de microambientes, siendo reconocido por su importancia como zona de reclutamiento. Este trabajo sirve como una línea de base para la creación de un plan de manejo adecuado (formación de una zona núcleo de Cabezo). Es necesario complementar este trabajo con nuevos esfuerzos del reconocimiento de las praderas de pastos marinos en todos los arrecifes del PNSAV, así como de monitoreos periódicos y reconocimiento de sus servicios ecosistémicos.


AbstractSeagrasses in coastal environments have been threatened by increased human activities; these have negatively altered processes and environmental services, and have decreased grassland areas. The aim of this study was to generate knowledge of Thalassia testudinum distribution, state of the structure and fragmentation level in two reefs of the Veracruz Reef System National Park (PNSAV). Two different reefs were selected: Sacrificios in the North and near the coast, and Cabezo in the South and away from the coast. Shoot-specific and area-specific characteristics of submerged macrophytes meadows present were determined, and four morpho-functional groups were identified. Significant differences between plant coverage were tested through nonparametric ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test. A supervised classification of spatial high-resolution image verified with field data was performed (55 Sacrificios and 290 Cabezo). The fragmentation level was calculated using landscape metrics, class level and thematic maps were made based on four covers. The meadows were dominated by Thalassia testudinum; maximum densities were 208 shoot/m2 in Cabezo, and 176 shoot/m2 in Sacrificios. Cabezo presented grasses with short (9 cm) and thin leaves (0.55 cm) on average; while Sacrificios showed longer (23.5 cm) and thicker (1 cm) leaves. Sacrificios showed lower fragmentation degree than Cabezo; in both cases, the vegetation cover fragmentation corresponded to less than 50 %. Although Cabezo reef presents further fragmentation, which creates a large number of microenvironments, being recognized for its importance as recruitment area. This work serves as a baseline for the creation of an adequate management plan (formation of a core area of Cabezo). It is necessary to complement this work with new efforts for the recognition of seagrass prairies in all PNSAV reefs, as well as periodic monitoring and recognition of ecosystem services. Rev. Biol. Non-native species of aquatic plants may become invasive and affect native communities, reducing the diversity of plants and other organisms. In general, the successful colonization of new habitats by macrophytes depends first on their dispersion ability and second on the existence of favorable abiotic conditions. In this investigation, we used a transplant experiment to test the effects of habitat water (main river channel versus lake) and habitat sediment (river sediment versus lake sediment) on the growth of two species, the non-native Hydrilla verticillata and the native macrophyte Egeria najas. We tested the hypothesis that the non-native species is more successful when it grows in the river channel with river sediment as substrate, whereas the native E. najas is more successful when it grows in the lake with lake sediment as substrate. Fragments of both species were planted in river and lake sediment and transported to the main river channel and a lake for the growing period. The field experiment results demonstrated that H. verticillata did not grow in either river or lake sediment when planted in the lake. However, this species developed higher root biomass than E. najas in the main river channel, which explains its predominance in this type of habitat. The results support the view that habitat characteristics are determinants of the successful or unsuccessful growth of H. verticillata in our study sites. Finally, H. verticillata invasiveness may improve after certain lag times in response to alterations in habitat, as observed for several other non-native species. Thus, future invasions of floodplain lakes by this species cannot be discarded.


Espécies não-nativas de plantas aquáticas podem se tornar invasoras e afetar as comunidades nativas, reduzindo a diversidade de plantas e de outros organismos. Em geral, a colonização por macrófitas em novos habitats depende em primeiro lugar de sua capacidade de dispersão e à existência de condições abióticas favoráveis. Nesta investigação foi utilizado um experimento de transplante para testar os efeitos da água do habitat (calha principal do rio versus lago) e sedimentos do habitat (sedimento do rio versus sedimento do lago) sobre o crescimento de duas espécies de macrófitas aquáticas a não-nativa Hydrilla verticillata e nativa Egeria najas. Foi testada a hipótese de que as espécie não-nativa é mais bem sucedida quando cresce no canal do rio com sedimento do rio como substrato, enquanto a nativa E. najas é mais bem sucedida quando cresce no lago com sedimento do lago como substrato. Fragmentos de ambas as espécies foram plantadas em sedimentos do rio e do lago e transportadas para o Rio e um lago para o cultivo. Resultados em campo mostraram que H. verticillata não cresceu no lago, em ambos os sedimentos (rio e lago). No entanto, esta espécie desenvolveu maior biomassa da raiz no rio, comparada a E. najas, o que explica sua predominância neste tipo de habitat. Os resultados apóiam a visão de que as características do habitat são determinantes para o sucesso ou insucesso de H. verticillata nos locais em que foram estudados. Finalmente, a invasão H. verticillata pode melhorar após um determinado intervalo de tempo em resposta a alterações no habitat, como observado para várias outras espécies não-nativas e, portanto, a futura invasão de lagos de várzea por esta espécie não pode ser descartada.

The Caribbean Coastal Marine Productivity Program (CARICOMP) was launched in 1993 to study regional long-term interactions between land and sea, taking standardized measurements of productivity and biomass of mangroves, coral reefs and seagrasses. Since 1999 continuous measurements of seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) parameters as well as environmental data have been recorded in Caribbean Panama. Replicate stations were selected near the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Bocas del Toro. Sediment cores and quadrants were placed there to estimate biomass and productivity, respectively. Mean values for productivity, standing crop, turnover rate, total dry biomass, and Leaf Area Index were 1.74gDW/m²/d, 66.6gDW/m², 2.62%/d, 1 481 gDW/m², and 4.65, respectively. Total dry biomass (shoots, rhizomes and roots) and LAI of T. testudinum increased significantly during the study period. Mean values for total rainfall, Secchi disk depth, sea surface temperature, and salinity were 3 498mm, 8.24m, 28.79°C, and 32.26psu, respectively. Sea surface temperature was the only environmental variable with a statistically significant change, increasing from 1999 to 2010. Correlation between sea surface temperature and T. testudinum parameters (total biomass and LAI) were both positive and significant. Human population has increased dramatically over the last ten years in Bocas del Toro region, increasing pressure (deforestation, runoff, wastewater) over coastal ecosystems (seagrasses, mangroves, coral reefs). Change in the abundance of T. testudinum may be linked to ocean warming, as a consequence to satisfy plant’s metabolic requirements, although other local factors need to be analyzed (reduced grazing and increased eutrophication). A further warming of the ocean could have a negative effect on T. testudinum population, increasing respiratory demands and microbial metabolism.


El Programa de Productividad Costera Marina del Caribe (CARICOMP) fue iniciado en 1993 para estudiar interacciones regionales a largo plazo entre la tierra y el mar, tomando mediciones estandarizadas de productividad y biomasa de manglares, arrecifes de coral y pastos marinos. Desde 1999 mediciones continuas de parámetros de pasto marino (Thalassia testudinum) así como datos ambientales han sido registrados para el Caribe de Panamá. Réplicas de estaciones fueron seleccionadas cerca del Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales en Bocas del Toro. Núcleos de sedimento y cuadrantes fueron colocados para estimar biomasa y productividad, respectivamente. Valores promedio de productividad, biomasa foliar, tasa de recambio, biomasa total seca e Índice de Área Foliar fueron 1.74gDW/m²/d, 66.6gDW/m², 2.62%/d, 1 481 gDW/m², y 4.65, respectivamente. La biomasa total seca (haces, rizomas y raíces) e Índice de Área Foliar de T. testudinum incrementaron significativamente durante el periodo de estudio. Valores promedio de lluvia total, profundidad de disco de Secchi, temperatura superficial del mar y salinidad fueron 3 498mm, 8.24m, 28.79°C, y 32.26psu, respectivamente. La temperatura superficial del mar fue la única variable ambiental con un incremento estadísticamente significativo, de 1999 a 2010. La correlación entre la temperatura superficial del mar y los parámetros de T. testudinum (biomasa total y LAI) fueron tanto positivos como significativos. La población humana ha crecido dramáticamente durante los últimos diez años en la región de Bocas del Toro, incrementando la presión (deforestación, escorrentía, aguas negras) sobre los ecosistemas costeros (pastos marinos, manglares, arrecifes coralinos). Cambios en la abundancia de T. testudinum pueden estar ligados al calentamiento oceánico, como una consecuencia para satisfacer los requerimientos metabólicos de la planta, aunque es necesario analizar otros factores locales (reducción del pastoreo e incremento en la eutrofización). Un mayor calentamiento del océano puede tener efectos negativos en la población de T. testudinum, incrementando las demandas respiratorias y el metabolismo microbiano.

Seagrasses are one of the most important coastal ecosystems since they promote organic matter flow, nutrient cycling, food availability and refuge. Until now, reports on damages caused by storms and hurricanes on seagrass beds are uncommon and highly variable. The seagrass meadows of the East end of Jardines de la Reina archipelago were surveyed from Nov. 29th to Dec. 5th of 2008, in order to determinate the effects from the passing of Hurricane Paloma: a category three storm on the Saffir-Simpsom scale. A rapid field assessment of the affected areas was carried out using the manta tow technique. In six sites, seagrass was quantitatively evaluated using a 15cm diameter core (four sampling units per site) and shoot density was calculated. Remote sensing techniques were used to estimate seagrass cover. To estimate the percentage of affected areas, a Region of Interest (ROI) was first created over a Landsat image. The percentage of seagrass affected within the ROI was estimated through direct georeferentiation of the contours of the damaged area and with a comparison to the total seagrass extension. To find possible explanations for damages, a false colour image was created using the near infrared band, to highlight the differences between emerged and submerged zones. The direction of winds was estimated using ArcGis 9.2 creating circular buffers, from the centre of the hurricane and generating lines tangent to the buffers. Seagrass in the region was dominated by the angiosperm Thalassia testudinum. Regional mean density was 1 321±721 shoots/m², a value regarded as high for the Caribbean area. Seagrass meadows were partly affected by sediment accumulation on the shoots of T. testudinum and uprooting rhizomes. The 7.6km² disturbed area represented 1% of the total seagrass area. Other sites, closer to the centre of the hurricane, did not show any damages on the marine vegetation. The keys location with respect to the hurricane track was the most likely cause of the effects. To the North of the affected area there is an opening among the keys where the generation of waves, currents and turbulence could have occurred. Three years after the hurricane event, both vegetation cover loss and silt re-colonization by macroalgae species were observed within the affected area, by showing a patchily-vegetated landscape. This site is currently undergoing a temporal succession whose assessment demands a monitoring scheme, that will provide interesting information to document its future evolution and responsiveness against upcoming natural or anthropogenic events.


Las descripciones de disturbios naturales, provocados por tormentas o huracanes, sobre las comunidades de pastos marinos son altamente variables. Del 29 de noviembre al 5 de diciembre 2008 se determinaron los efectos del huracán Paloma, categoría tres en la escala Saffir-Simpsom, sobre los pastos marinos del extremo oriental del Archipiélago Jardines de la Reina. Se llevó a cabo una evaluación rápida de campo mediante recorridos con arrastre (manta tow) y se muestreo cuantitativamente en seis sitios. Se utilizaron técnicas de teledetección para estimar la extensión de los pastos. La densidad media regional fue de 1 321±721vástagos/m², valor considerado como alto para la zona del Caribe. El pasto marino sufrió afectaciones parciales provocadas por acumulación de sedimentos sobre los vástagos de Thalassia testudinum o desenterramiento de rizomas. El área bajo disturbios fue de 7.6km² que representa el 1% del total de pastos marinos. Sitios más cercanos al ojo del huracán no mostraron afectaciones en la vegetación marina. La distribución de los cayos con respecto a la trayectoria del huracán se define como la causa más probable del patrón de afectación observado. Después de tres años del paso del huracán, la evolución del área afectada apunta hacia una pérdida de vegetación y re-colonización del sedimento por especies de macroalgas, se observa un paisaje con vegetación por parches. El sitio se encuentra en una sucesión temporal, por lo que se hace oportuno evaluar el área afectada mediante un programa de monitoreo para documentar su evolución futura y ante nuevos episodios naturales y/o antrópicos.

This study investigated the structure of the Oligochaeta and Chironomidae assemblages associated with monospecific stands of two submerged macrophyte species: Egeria najas and Hydrilla verticillata. Samplings were carried out in Leopoldo Backwater and Paraná river, in August 2008. To assess the structure of Oligochaeta and Chironomidae assemblage in each macrophyte we calculated: species density, richness, diversity, and evenness. A detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) was used to summarize Oligochaeta and Chironomidae assemblages composition. The highest values of species density and richness for the two groups were recorded in H. verticillata. Although there were no significant differences in density, richness and Shannon diversity, the assemblage composition of these groups was significantly different between plant species. These results suggest that despite being a recent colonizer in the upper Paraná river habitats, the non-native species H. verticillata seems to provide favorable conditions for the establishment of native assemblages of Chironomidae and Oligochaeta. Moreover, differences in the species composition of Oligochaeta and Chironomidae arose from peculiar characteristics of each plant, as attached microorganisms and organic matter, so that other factors, rather than plant architecture can also influence the assemblage of these groups.


Este estudo objetivou investigar a estrutura da assembleia de Oligochaeta e Chironomidae em associação com bancos puros de duas espécies de macrófitas submersas: Hydrilla verticillata e Egeria najas. As coletas foram realizadas no ressaco do Leopoldo e no rio Paraná, em agosto de 2008. Para avaliar a estrutura da assembleia de Oligochaeta e Chironomidae em cada macrófita foram calculados: densidade, riqueza, diversidade de Shannon e equitabilidade. Uma análise de correspondência destendenciada (DCA) foi usada para sumarizar a composição da assembleia de Oligochaeta e Chironomidae. Os maiores valores de densidade e riqueza para os dois grupos foram registrados na H. verticillata. Embora não houvesse nenhuma diferença significativa na densidade, riqueza e diversidade de Shannon, a composição da assembleia desses grupos foi significativamente diferente entre as macrófitas. Esses resultados sugerem que apesar de ser uma colonizadora recente dos habitats do alto rio Paraná, H. verticillata parece prover condições favoráveis para o estabelecimento das assembleias de Oligochaeta e Chironomidae. Além disso, diferenças na composição de espécies desses grupos ocorreram devido às características peculiares de cada planta, como micro-organismos e matéria orgânica aderidos, de forma que outros fatores, em vez de arquitetura da planta, podem também influenciar a assembleia desses grupos.

Introducción: las plantas medicinales son todas aquellas que contienen un principio activo o más, los cuales, administrados con la dosis adecuada, producen un efecto curativo a las enfermedades del hombre y los animales. El hecho de contener más de un principio activo hace que una planta medicinal pueda servir para tratar diferentes afecciones o trastornos. Objetivo: analizar los beneficios y las potencialidades terapéuticas de la planta marina Thalassia testudinum a partir de una revisión de la información existente y los principales resultados de las investigaciones realizadas sobre este organismo marino. Desarrollo: los productos naturales con propiedades terapéuticas han sido muy utilizados en la medicina tradicional. Indudablemente, los extractos de plantas de origen terrestre han representado hasta el presente una de las fuentes de mayor interés para la obtención de fitofármacos. Sin embargo, una fuente útil aún no explorada lo suficiente son los organismos marinos, que al evolucionar y vivir en condiciones ecológicas únicas y como resultado de su gran diversidad taxonómica en relación con la de los organismos terrestres, pueden sintetizar moléculas que no tienen equivalencia con las encontradas hasta el presente en estos últimos. Eso puede derivar en la obtención de estructuras químicas novedosas con efectos farmacológicos sui generis, tal es el caso de la fenograma marina Thalassia testudinum...


Introduction: medicinal plants are those which contain one or more active principles that have a curative effect upon some illnesses which affect men and animals, whenever it is adequately administered. When one plant contains more than one active principle, it can be used to treat different ailments or body disorders. Objective: to analyze the benefits and therapeutic potentialities of the sea plant Thalassia testudinum based on the existent information and in the main results of research works about this sea organism. Development: natural products with therapeutic properties have been widely used in traditional medicine. Undoubtedly, the extracts from ground origin trees have so far represented one of the most interesting sources for phytodrugs. Nevertheless, sea organisms are a useful source which has not been fully explored. As they live and evolve in unique ecologic conditions, and as a result of their great taxonomic diversity in relation to that of ground organisms, they can synthesize molecules that are not equivalent to those of ground organisms found until now. This can derive in obtaining new chemical structures with sui generis pharmacological effects as in the case of the marine phenogram Thalassia testudinum. From this plant, poliphelonic structure-rich extract has been obtained, which show therapeutic potentialities associated to the great variety of beneficial effects that have been described in the studies such as anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, antioxidative and neuroprotective properties. All the aforementioned turns this new developing product into a possible phytodrug. Conclusions: the sea organisms represent a new source to obtain new phytodrugs and nutritional supplements of great use in human health and nutrition

Ichthyc biodiversity of seagrass meadows from the Northwest coast of Cariaco Gulf , Venezuela. Seagrasses are highly productive coastal ecosystems with a high diversity and abundance of fishes, very important to support artisanal fisheries. We analyzed the fish community structure of Thalassia testudinum in the communities of Manzanillo (M) and La Brea (LB), Northwest coast of Cariaco Gulf, Venezuela. Samples were taken monthly (Nov. 2006-Oct. 2007) from each place, using a beach net. A total of 34 810 fishes were captured, grouped into 13 orders, 36 families and 83 species. In both areas (M and LB), the number of species was similar, but a variation in their abundance was found: a total of 55 species and 13 210 organisms for M, and 58 species and 21 600 organisms for LB. The most abundant species and those with the highest biomasses in both areas were: Nicholsina usta, Haemulon boschmae, H. steindachneri, Harengula jaguana, Halichoeres bivittatus and Hemiramphus brasiliensis. The occasional visitors were the most frequent community components with a 59%, the cyclical and permanent residents were represented by the 22% and 19%, respectively. The H’n average for M was of 1.71±0.64bits/ind., while for LB was of 1.95±0.51bits/ind. The diversity values were directly related to the evenness and inversely related to the dominance. The low values of similarity indexes among localities allow us to assert that these fish communities are dissimilar, because of the structure of each Thalassia meadow and their connectivity with other systems. Los pastos marinos son ecosistemas costeros de alta productividad, con gran diversidad y abundancia de peces, la cual es aprovechada por pescadores artesanales. En este estudio se analizó la estructura comunitaria íctica de praderas de Thalassia testudinum en Manzanillo (M) y La Brea (LB), costa noroeste del Golfo de Cariaco, Venezuela. También, se realizaron muestreos mensuales (11-2006 al 10-2007), con la utilización de una red playera. Se capturaron 34 810 organismos agrupados en 13 órdenes, 36 familias y 83 especies. En ambas zonas, el número de especies fue similar, aunque el número de organismos vario, y se encontró para M un total de 55 especies y 13 210 organismos y para LB 58 especies y 21 600 organismos. Las especies más abundantes y de mayor biomasa en el área muestreada fueron: Nicholsina usta, Haemulon boschmae, H. steindachneri, Harengula jaguana, Halichoeres bivittatus y Hemiramphus brasiliensis. Los visitantes ocasionales fue el componente comunitario más frecuente con 59%, los cíclicos y los residentes permanentes obtuvieron 22 y 19%, respectivamente. En M la H’n fue de 1.71±0.64bits/ind; entretanto en LB fue 1.95±0.51bits/ind. Los valores de la diversidad estuvieron relacionados directamente con la equitabilidad e inversamente con la dominancia. Los bajos valores del índice de similaridad, entre localidades permite establecer que estas comunidades ícticas son disimiles, debido quizás a la estructuración de cada pradera de Thalassia y a la conectividad con otros sistemas.

Hurricane impact on Thalassia testudinum (Hydrocharitaceae) beds in the Mexican Caribbean. Hurricanes have increased in strength and frequency as a result of global climate change. This research was conducted to study the spatio-temporal distribution and changes of Thalassia testudinum, the dominant species in Bahia de la Ascension (Quintana Roo, Mexico), when affected by heavy weather conditions. To complete this objective, a 2001 Landsat ETM+ image and the information from 525 sampling stations on morpho-functional and coverage of T. testudinum were used, and the seeds generated for the classification of eight benthic habitats. To quantify the changes caused by two hurricanes, we used two images, one of 1988 (Gilberto) and another of 1995 (Roxanne); other three data sets (2003, 2005 and 2007) were also used to describe the study area without major weather effects. Six categorial maps were obtained and subjected to analysis by 8 Landscape Ecology indexes, that describe the spatial characteristics, structure, function, change of the elements (matrix-patch-corridor), effects on ecosystems, connectivity, edges, shape and patch habitat fragmentation. Models indicate that T. testudinum may be classified as a continuum (matrix), since the fragments were not observed intermittently, but as a progression from minimum to maximum areas in reference to their coverage (ecological corridors). The fragments do not have a regular shape, indicating that the impacts are recent and may be due to direct effects (high-intensity hurricanes) or indirect (sediment). Fragments of type "bare soils" have a discontinuous distribution, and are considered to be the sites that have remained stable over a long timescale. While more dense coverage areas ("beds", "medium prairie" and "prairie") have low fragmentation and high connection of fragments. Features have an irregular perimeter and radial growth of formal; suggesting that the impact of meteors has no effect on the resilience of T. testudinum in this ecosystem, indicating good environmental quality to grow in this bay. Thalassia testudinum es la macrófita dominante en Bahía de la Ascensión (Quintana Roo, México), se estudió para conocer su distribución espacio- temporal y determinar si fue afectada por el paso de huracanes que se han visto incrementados en fuerza y frecuencia por el cambio climático. Partiendo de una imagen Landsat ETM+de 2001 y usando información de grandes grupos morfofuncionales y de cobertura de T. testudinum adquiridas en 525 estaciones de muestreo, se obtienen las semillas para la clasificación supervisada de los hábitats bénticos (8 clases). Con el fin de cuantificar los cambios ocasionados por dos huracanes, se usaron dos imágenes, una de 1988 (Gilberto) y 1995 (Roxanne) y tres más (2003, 2005 y 2007) para monitoreo sin efectos meteorológicos mayores; a estos 6 mapas categóricos se les aplicó un análisis de Ecología del Paisaje usando 8 índices que describen las características espaciales, de estructura, función, cambio de los elementos (matriz-mancha-corredor), efectos sobre el ecosistema, conectividad, bordes, forma del parche y fragmentación del hábitat. Los modelos indican que T. testudinum puede clasificarse como un continuo (matriz), pues los fragmentos no se observan de forma intermitente, sino como una progresión de zonas mínimas a máximas en referencia a su cobertura (corredores ecológicos). No poseen una forma regular, indicando que los impactos son recientes y pueden ser debidos a efectos directos (huracanes de alta intensidad) e indirectos (aporte de sedimentos). Los fragmentos de tipo "suelos desnudos" presentan una distribución discontinua, considerándose sitios que han permanecido estables en una larga escala de tiempo; las zonas con coberturas más densas ("camas", "praderas medias" y "praderas") presentan baja fragmentación y alta conexión de sus fragmentos. Las características de poseer un perímetro irregular y crecimiento de formal radial, sugieren que el impacto de los meteoros no tiene efecto en la capacidad de resiliencia de T. testudinum en este ecosistema, indicando el buen estado de la calidad ambiental de la bahía para su crecimiento.

The CARICOMP site at Puerto Morelos, Mexico was monitored from 1993 to 2005. No significant changes in air temperature, wind patterns, periodicity and quantity of rainfall, sea-surface temperature and water transparency were observed between sampling years. During the study four hurricane impacts were registered. At the coral reef site overall mean cover of fleshy algae (47%) and turf algae (36%) were high, whereas cover of corals (2%) and sponges (3%), and abundance of sea-urchins (0.04 org m-2) were consistently low. Gorgonians were dominant and showed changes in their community structure; the number of species increased from 1993 to 1995, their abundance decreased after Hurricane Roxanne (1995) and recovered by 2001. At four seagrass sites total community biomass remained constant (707.1-929.6 g dry m-2) but the above-ground biomass of the seagrass Syringodium filiforme and fleshy algae increased gradually. Total biomass (531-699 g dry m-2) and leaf productivity (0.89-1.56 g dry m-2 d-1) of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum remained constant, but the species invested proportionally more biomass in above-ground leaf tissues at the end of the study. The minor hurricanes from 1993 until 2005 had no detectable impacts on the seagrass beds, however, the major Hurricane Wilma (October 2005) changed the community composition at three stations and caused complete burial of the vegetation at a coastal station. The gradual changes in the seagrass and reef communities recorded in the 12 years of continuous monitoring of the CARICOMP site may reflect the increased pollution caused by the rapid augment in urban and tourist developments along the coasts and inland from Puerto Morelos, coupled with poor water management practices. El sitio CARICOMP en Puerto Morelos, México, se monitoreo de 1993 a 2005. No se registraron cambios significativos en la temperatura del aire, los patrones de viento, la periodicidad y cantidad de lluvia, la temperatura superficial del mar y la transparencia del agua entre los años de muestreo. Durante el estudio se registraron cuatro huracanes menores. En el sitio del arrecife coralino la cobertura global promedio de algas carnosas (47%) y de algas tipo tapete (36%) fue elevada, mientras que la cobertura de corales (2%), esponjas (3%) y la abundancia de erizos (0.04 m-2) fue consistentemente baja. Los gorgonáceos fueron dominantes y mostraron cambios en su estructura comunitaria; el número de especies aumentó de 1993 a 1995, su abundancia disminuyó después del Huracán Roxanne (1995) y se recuperó en el 2001. En cuatro estaciones de pastos marinos la biomasa total de la comunidad permaneció constante (707.1-929.6 gps m-2) pero la biomasa sobre el sustrato del pasto Syringodium filiforme y de algas carnosas aumentó gradualmente. La biomasa total (531-699 gps m-2) y productividad de hojas (0.89-1.56 gps m-2 d-1) del pasto Thalassia testudinum permaneció constante, pero la especie invirtió proporcionalmente más biomasa en el tejido de hojas sobre el sustrato al final del estudio. Los huracanes menores entre 1993 y 2005 no produjeron impactos detectables en las camas de pastos, sin embargo, el huracán mayor Wilma (Octubre 2005) cambió la composición de la comunidad en tres estaciones y causó el enterramiento completo de la vegetación en la estación costera. El cambio gradual en las comunidades de pastos marinos y arrecife registrado en 12 años de monitoreo continuo en el sitio CARICOMP puede reflejar un aumento en la contaminación causada por el rápido incremento en desarrollo urbano y turístico a lo largo de la costa y tierra adentro de Puerto Morelos, acompañado por malas prácticas de manejo del agua.

Seagrass beds are highly productive and valuable habitats, which fulfill a key role in coastal ecosystems. Spatial distribution, biomass, density, productivity and leaf dynamics of the dominant seagrass species Thalassia testudinum were studied at five locations in the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge, Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, from November 2005 until March 2006. Seagrass beds within the study area cover approximately 16 ha. Spatial and temporal differences in ecological seagrass parameters were examined along gradients of riverine inputs and related to a range of environmental parameters (depth, grain size distribution, nutrient concentrations, salinity and temperature). Average canopy cover and above-ground biomass of T. testudinum inversely correlated with depth, but did not vary significantly between study sites when compared along depth ranges. Considerable spatio-temporal variations in shoot densities, areal productivity and leaf sizes seem to be related to riverine inputs and wave energy. It appeared that T. testudinum at exposed sites respond to increased environmental disturbance related to the offset of the rainy season with clonal recruitment, whereby shoot densities increase and average leaf sizes are reduced. Lower shoot densities and greater leaf sizes, in contrast, are characteristic for locations with rather consistent environmental conditions, where seagrasses are sheltered. T. testudinum in the refuge has higher shoot densities but shorter leaves and lower productivity compared to sites in 15 other Caribbean countries. The seagrass beds appear to be in a relatively healthy state, however, observations of temporal increased stocks of filamentous epiphytes and macroalgae indicate temporal environmental stress in the system. Las praderas de pastos marinos son sitios altamente productivos y hábitats valiosos en los ecosistemas costeros. Se estudió los cambios espaciales y temporales en la distribución del pasto marino dominante Thalassia testudinum, en cinco localidades expuestas a un gradiente de influencia fluvial, en el Refugio Nacional de vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo, Costa Rica, entre noviembre 2005 y marzo 2006. El pasto cubre unas 16ha. Tanto cobertura como biomasa disminuyen al aumentar la profundidad, pero no hubo diferencia de cobertura y biomasa entre lugares. Las variaciones espacio-temporales en densidad de estolones, productividad y tamaño de hojas, probablemente están relacionadas con la entrada de agua del río y la energía de las olas. Al parecer T. testudinum responde a disturbios ambientales con reclutamiento clonal: la densidad de estolones aumenta y las hojas son más pequeñas. En Gandoca-Manzanillo la densidad de estolones es mayor, las hojas más cortas y la productividad inferior, en comparación con otros 15 sitios del Caribe. Según estos parámetros, los pastos marinos de Gandoca-Manzanillo están en muy buenas condiciones. Sin embargo, se observaron aumentos en algas filamentosas epífitas y de macroalgas, que indican un impacto temporal en el sistema.

In the present study, a small fresh water aquatic ecosystem was created into a small test tank to evaluate the movement and bioaccumulation of Cr (VI) through water, sediment, a macrophyte Hydrilla, small fish guppy, and few key organs of magur, Clarias batrachus. The Cr (VI) intoxication was imposed of as a single dose of 30 mg/l concentration for a wide range of exposure durations like 1, 7, 14 and 21 days. After 1 day of exposure the total Cr (VI) load was very high in the water and sediment samples (5.187 microg/ml and 23.332 microg/g respectively) which were decreased with increasing exposure durations over their respective controls. In samples of macrophyte, Cr (VI) concentration showed a gradual increasing trend from 6.1797 microg/g in control to 21.1903 microg/g in 1 day exposure and reached up to 24.635 microg/g after 21 days exposure. In guppy, the Cr (VI) bioaccumulation showed an increasing trend but the rate was not statistically significant. However, in magur, the Cr (VI) uptake showed a significant gradual and increasing trend with increasing exposure durations in liver, brain, intestine and muscular tissues than gill and kidney over their respective controls. The movement of the Cr (VI) was found to be from sediment to water during pre-treatment phase, after intoxication, from water to macrophyte and to other phytoplankton and zooplankton. It then accumulated in the primary consumer guppy and finally moved to the secondary consumer the magur following the food web. The results reveal that the rate of movement and bioaccumulation of Cr (VI) varied from organism to organism and in C. batrachus, from tissue to tissue.

Seasonal variations of polychaetes in a Thalassia testudinum bed were studied from June 2000 to April 2001 in Chacopata, northeastern Venezuela. Eight replicate samples were taken monthly with a 15 cm diameter core and the sediment was passed through a 0.5 mm mesh sieve. A total of 1,013 specimens, belonging to 35 species, was collected. The monthly density ranged from 387 ind/m2 (September) to 1,735 ind/m2 in May (x = 989+/-449 ind/m2). Species richness was lowest in August and September (8) and highest (25) in April (x = 18.00+/-5.29). The shoot density of Thalassia showed an average of 284+/-77.60 shoots/m2, with extreme values in February (164) and May (422). Species diversity ranged from 1.25 in August and 3.33 bits/ind in December (x = 2.47+/-0.64). Significant positive correlations were detected among the number of Thalassia shoots, polychaete abundance and species richness, as well as among species richness, polychaete abundance and species diversity. Species number and average density were found within the intervals of mean values reported in similar studies. The higher number of species and organisms obtained in March-April and June-July can be attributed to the recruitment correlated with the regional up-welling.

Annual biomass and productivity of Thalassia testudinum were determined during a year at a seagrass bed located in the Parque Nacional Morrocoy, Venezuela. Leaf, rhizome and root biomass were determined monthly, together with short-shoot density, from February 1992 to January 1993, from nine replicated core samples. Productivity was measured using the methodology by Zieman (1974) with minor modifications, and leaf turnover rate was calculated. Leaf biomass values ranged between 101.73 dry g m(-2) in February and 178.11 dry g m(-2) in August. Productivity ranged from 1.69 dry g m(-2) d(-1) in April and October to 3.30 dry g m(-2) d(-1) in July, showing two annual peaks: one in July and one in March. The leaf turnover rate showed the highest value in June (2.41% d(-1)) and the lowest in May (1.23% d(-1)). Sampling time differences in leaf biomass, productivity and turnover rate were statistically significant. Short-shoot density values varied between 811.10 shoots m(-2) in April and 1226.08 shoots m(-2) in December, but the differences were not significant along the year. These results indicated seasonal trends for leaf biomass, productivity and turnover rate of T. testudinum in the Southern Caribbean (latitude 10 degrees N).


Durante un año se determinaron mensualmente la productividad foliar, la densidad de tallos cortos y la biomasa de hojas, tallos cortos, rizomas y raíces de Thalassia testudinum, en una “pradera” localizada en el Parque Nacional Morrocoy, Venezuela. Los valores de biomasa foliar estuvieron entre 101.73 g/m2 en febrero y 178.11 g/m2 en agosto, los de productividad foliar se ubicaron entre 1.69 g/m2/d en abril y octubre y 3.30 g/m2/d en julio, mostrando dos picos anuales, uno en julio y otro en marzo. La tasa de recambio foliar mostró el mayor valor en junio (2.41%/d) y el menor en mayo (1.23%/d). Tales diferencias fueron estadísticamente significativas durante el año para todas estas variables. La densidad de tallos cortos fluctuó entre 811.10 tallos/m2 en abril y 1 226.08 tallos/m2 en diciembre, pero las diferencias no fueron significativas a lo largo del año. Estos resultados indicaron una tendencia estacional para la biomasa foliar, la productividad foliar y la tasa de recambio de las hojas de T. testudinum en el Caribe Sur, a 10º N de latitud.

The diversity and abundance of ichthyofauna associated with Thalassia testudinum in the Lobos coral reef, Veracruz, Mexico, were studied in September and October 2002. Thirty six visual censuses in four sample sites were made using a 50 x 2 m transect belt. On each census, fish species, abundance and size were recorded. Leaf size and cover of T. testudinum were estimated. The similarity of fish groups was calculated with the Gower coefficient. The most abundant coral reef fishes were: Scarus iseri, Halichoeres bivittatus, Sparisoma radians, Stegastes adustus and Stegastes leucostictus. The highest density (0.04078 ind/m2) and biomass (0.72408 g/m2) of fish species were recorded in site II, where leaf size was greater (30.8 cm). The analysis of variance showed significant differences between sites in leaf size (F=18.30856; p=0.00001) and cover (H=33.8119; p=0.00001). These differences suggest a relationship between fish diversity and abundance, and T. testudinum leaf size and cover. The Gower similarity index produced two groups of fishes; one of them (site II) showed the highest abundance. In this reef, the fishes associated to sea grasses seem to reflect the characteristics of T. testudinum.


El presente trabajo aporta información sobre diversidad y abundancia de la comunidad de peces, ligada a la zona de Thalassia testudinum en el arrecife Lobos, Veracruz, México. Para esto, en septiembre y octubre de 2002, fueron escogidas cuatro estaciones de muestreo y en cada una, se realizaron nueve censos visuales de peces utilizando bandas de 50 x 2 m. Durante los censos se identificaron las especies de peces, además de calcular su abundancia y talla. También se estimó la talla y la cobertura de T. testudinum por estación, con el fin de relacionarla con la diversidad y la abundancia ictiológica. Las especies de peces más relevantes por su abundancia fueron: Scarus iseri, Halichoeres bivittatus, Sparisoma radians, Stegastes adustus y Stegastes leucostictus. La mayor densidad (0.04078 ind/m2) y biomasa ictiológica (0.72408 g/m2) se presentaron en la estación II, donde la talla de los pastos marinos (30.8 cm) fue mayor. El análisis de varianza para la talla de las hojas de T. testudinum indica diferencias significativas (F=18.30856; p=0.00001) entre estaciones, al igual que para la cobertura (H=33.8119;p=0.00001). Estas diferencias sugieren una relación con la abundancia ictiológica, especialmente con la talla de las hojas de T. testudinum. El análisis de similitud de Gower, muestra la formación de dos grupos de peces, donde la estación II se diferencia del resto por su mayor riqueza y abundancia. La comunidad de peces ligada a T. testudinum parece variar en función de las características de los pastos marinos.

In this investigation, the efficacy of the herbicide butachlor, [N-butoxymethyl-2 chloro-2[1], 6[1] diethyl 1 acetanilide] was tested against few common submerged macrophytes namely Hydrilla [Hydrilla verticillata [L.] Royale], Najas [Najas minor All.], Nechamandra [Nechamandra alternifolia [Roxb.] Thwaites] and Ottelia [Ottelia alismoides [L.] Pers.] of freshwater fish ponds. Almost complete decay of Hydrilla, Nechamandra and Ottelia was achieved at 7.5 L of active ingredient/ha/m butachlor within 15 days while the herbicide showed no negative effect on Najas. However at the same concentration of butachlor, total mortality of zooplankton and water fern Azolla [Azolla caroliniana Lamarck] occurred within seven days. In case of few freshwater fish species like Rohu [Labeo rohita], Channa [Channa punctatus], Anabas [Anabas testitudineus] and Heteropneustes [Heteropneustes fossilis], total mortality occurred upto 90 days after application of the same dose of butachlor but fish survived beyond 120 days of herbicide application indicating degradation of the herbicides
