RESUMEN

The advantages of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are its sensitivity and its accuracy in detecting and measuring immunoglobulin classes. By ELISA, the tear IgA level was measured in 165 healthy persons. Tears were collected by a strong absorbent (Weck Cel(R)). This is the first report of a tear IgA level in normal Koreans measured by ELISA. The mean level was 60.5 +/- 23.4 mg/dl. There was no statistically significant difference between the IgA level in the males (61.8 +/- 23.2 mg/dl) and that of the females (58.4 +/- 23.5 mg/dl)(p > 0.05). The difference between the tear IgA levels in the various age groups was not significant (p > 0.05).

RESUMEN

The significance of tear film break-up time (BUT) was investigated by analyzing its distribution and reproducibility in 30 normal subjects and 20 dry eye patients. The BUTs* were all above 5 seconds and the reproducibility was 65% in normalsubjects. However, those were all below 10 seconds and the reproducibility was 95% in dry eye patients. These results suggest that: 1) The patient whose BUT* is below 5 seconds can be diagnosed as dry eye syndrome. 2) The value of BUT* above 10 seconds can be regarded as normal. (*The mean value of 4 different visits)

RESUMEN

The central corneal thickness as well as tear and blood glucose levels were significantly increased in diabetic patients as compared to normal persons. The tear glucose level of 9.0 mg/ld or less suggested good control of D.M.

RESUMEN

The present study analyses the precorneal teat film using schirmer's test and tear film breakup time (BKUT) in 400 eyes of patients with various types of leprosy. An abnormal tear film BKUT (47.2%) was observed to be much more informative in the present series than the study of schirmer's test alone (25.4%). In patients with lagophthalmos an abnormal tear film BKUT (70%) was higher as compared to an abnormal schirmer's test (40%); while in cases of lagophthalmos with ectropion an abnormal schirmer's test was seen less frequently (26.8%) than in cases of lagophthalmos without ectropion (58.3%). This implied an increase in the aqueous content of the tear film in cases of lagophthalmos with ectropion on the basis of an associated chronic conjunctivitis. Lagophthalmos and ectropion have been identified as additional factors contributing to corneal morbidity. There was a statistically significant difference in the tear film abnormality in different types of leprosy, the maximal difference being in the lepromatous variety.

RESUMEN

The tear lysozyme and immunoglobulin A [I g A] content in 50 normal subjects and in 100 patients with different acute bacterial conjunctivitis were determined by a single radial immunodiffusion technque. Tear lysozyme level in normal subjects was 1.30+0.64 mg/ml. The mean tearlysozme level in acute bacterial conjunctivitis 1.28+0.35 which is not significantly different from those in the normal controls. Immunoglobulin A level in tear of normal subjects was 24.6+15 mg/100 ml. The mean tear immunoglobulin A level in acute bacterial conjunctivitis was 34.1+18 mg/100 ml. Which is sinificantly higher than normal
