RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether systemically injected bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be incorporated into neuroretinal tissues and play an important role in retinal wound healing in the laser-induced retinal trauma model. METHODS: Retinotomies were made by applying an Nd:YAG laser to rat retina. On the first day after the injuries, cell suspensions that were obtained from the same line of rat (containing 1 x 10(6) green fluorescence protein [GFP]-marked bone marrow-derived MSCs) were injected through a tail vein in the experimental group and phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was injected in the same way in the control group. Fundus photographs were taken serially for fundus examination and eyeballs were enucleated for histological studies that were conducted at five and seven weeks after MSC and PBS injection. After the tissues were prepared, the retinotomy sites were observed with routine histological staining and confocal microscopy. RESULTS: Retinal detachment resolved in the experimental group, whereas it progressed in the control group. The retinotomy sites closed partially with identifiable GFP positive cells 5 weeks after MSC injection. At 7 weeks after MSC injection, complete healing without retinal detachment and plentiful GFP positive cells were observed at the transitional zone between damaged and normal retina. CONCLUSIONS: Systemically administered GFP-marked MSCs may be incorporated into the neuroretinal tissues and play an important role in the wound modulation of physically damaged retinal tissues.

RESUMEN

We report a 55-year-old man with unusually dense, unilateral central posterior capsule pigmentation associated with the characteristic clinical features of pigment dispersion syndrome, including a Krukenberg's spindle and dense trabecular pigmentation in both eyes. A history of an old blunt ocular trauma probably caused separation of the anterior hyaloid from the back of the lens, thereby creating an avenue by which pigment could reach the potential space of Berger's from the posterior chamber.

RESUMEN

We report a large series of ocular injuries caused by fire-crackers. This study was a hospital-based, singlecenter, retrospective case series in which the records of 51 patients with ocular injuries were analyzed. Injuries were classified according to Birmingham eye trauma terminology system (BETTS). Visual outcomes before and after the intervention were recorded. Ten patients were admitted for further management. As ocular firecracker injuries result in significant morbidity, public education regarding proper use of firecrackers may help in reducing the incidence of ocular injuries.

The ocular tissue can be involved and affected by metastatic tumors. The choroid is the most common localization site for this metastasis. The most common primary lesions found and involved were in the breast in the female (47 %) and in the lung in male (25 %). Occasionally, ocular metastasis may be the first sign of an asymptomatic primary tumor. We report a case of a 40 year old woman which consults to ophthalmology doctor, she refer a progressive decreased visual acuity in her right eye due as consequence of a right choroid metastasis of an adenocarcinoma of unknown origin. The ocular symptoms were the initial manifestation of the disease.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE@#To study the injury modes, the injury characteristics, the disability grade assessments and other relative problems in eye injuries after traffic accidents.@*METHODS@#Eighty four ocular disability cases after traffic accidents collected from March 2007 to March 2009 in our institute were retrospectively analyzed. Then to study the ocular disability reasons, the assessment time and methods.@*RESULTS@#The main cause of ocular disability is visual dysfunction, and the other causes for example eyeball missing, injury of eyelid, injury of lacrimal apparatus, traumatic cataract and defect of visual field were rare relatively. Most ocular injuries happened to single eye. The disability grades were often from VII to X.@*CONCLUSION@#The accuracy of visual function expertise could be improved by using some tests and visual electrophysiological measurements. The vision and ophthalmology data before the injury of the wounded who has intrinsical disease should be provided. The assessment time should be delayed for people whose visual function still may change.

RESUMEN

A rare case of sudoriferous cyst of the orbit occurring in an adult, who had facial trauma, is reported. Several factors suggest its adult onset. The only other case reported in an adult is of presumed childhood origin. Very few congenital cases have been reported. A 65-year-old lady presented with recent onset of left-sided ptosis and a painless mass below the left supraorbital margin. The patient had traumatic ptosis after a road traffic accident 13 years ago. The ptosis was surgically repaired, which resulted in symmetrical palpebral apertures. Computed tomographic scan revealed a well-defined cystic mass in the anterior orbit. The mass was removed in toto by anterior orbitotomy. Histopathological examination revealed a single cyst lined by double-layered cuboidal epithelium in some areas and transitional epithelium at others. A periodic acid Schiff (PAS) positive, diastase-resistant glycocalyx lined the inner epithelium. Apical snouting suggested an apocrine nature. This confirmed a diagnosis of sudoriferous cyst.

RESUMEN

The study was done to find out pathologic processes in ophthalmic patients in different age group to understand the use, role and limitations of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of ocular pathology in this locality. A prospective study was done on total 143 patients from September 2004 to January 2006 who attended Centre for Nuclear Medicine & Ultrasound, Mymensingh for ultrasound evaluation of eye. Total 100 (69.93%, n=100) cases were male and 43 (30.06%, n=43) cases were female. The age ranges were 2 months to 80 years. A variety of ocular pathology was diagnosed with the help of high resolution ultrasound (HRUS) with unique ultrasound appearance. Bulk of the referral patients had history of ocular trauma (38.46 %, n= 38) and most commonly detected pathology in these group are vitreous hemorrhage (34.44%, n=34) and cataract formation (28.28%, n=28). Almost all of the patients did not have conclusive diagnosis clinically and by conventional means available before ultrasonography were performed. High resolution sonography may be used as a valuable tool for evaluation of ophthalmic pathology as a well suited, noninvasive method, and only practical imaging modality for assessing those cases particularly when light conducting media are opaque.

RESUMEN

Enucleation or complete removal of eye is considered to be a mainstay of therapy for many end-stage diseases of eye. We aimed to determine the frequency and indications for enucleations perfomed at a tertiary care hospital in eastern India. A total of 150 enucleated eyes from 146 patients were analyzed. The formalin fixed paraffin embedded sections of all enucleated eyes were examined microscopically and histopathological analysis was done. In the present series, malignant tumours were most frequent indication of enucleation (64%) followed by ocular inflammation (14.7%), staphyloma (6.7%), trauma (5.3%), painful blind eye due to glaucoma (4%). Retinoblastoma, a malignant tumour emerged as commonest indication (52%). Three major indications for enucleation were malignant tumours, ocular inflammation and staphyloma altogether 92%. Malignant melanoma though commonest ophthalmic tumour requiring enucleation in many parts of the world was not very common in our studies comprising 18.7% of all malignant tumours.

RESUMEN

Previous studies have shown ocular haemorrhages in choline-deficient rats. The aim of this paper is to study further the relationship between ocular and renal lesions and biochemical alterations in rats fed a choline-deficient diet. Fifty one weanling male Wistar rats, were divided into two groups. Thirty one ofthem were fed a choline-deficient diet and the rest was fed a choline- supplemented diet ad libitum. Animalsfrom both groups were killed between the fifth and the eighth day. Urea, creatinine and homocysteine concentrations in blood were determined. Eyes were used for light microscopy study; high resolution lightmicroscopy and the study of the retina as “rétine a plat”. Kidneys were studied by light microscopy. Cholinesupplementedrats did not show ocular or renal lesion. Choline-deficient rats that showed renal lesions, tubular or cortical necrosis, did not always have ocular changes. There were no ocular changes in the only cholinedeficient rat without renal lesion. The ocular changes consisted mainly in haemorrhage in both cameras andciliary and vitreous bodies. Correlations between ocular and renal lesion (r=0.72, p<0.0001, CI 95%: 0.48-0.86); ocular lesion and creatinine (r=0.86, p<0.0001, CI 95%: 0.72-0.93) and ocular lesion and urea (r=0.70, p<0.0001, CI 95%: 0.44-0.85) were positive. Choline-deficiency induces ocular haemorrhagic lesions after the development of renal necrosis. The ocular pathology could be due to the immaturity of the ocular vasculature at this age. The hyaloid, choroid and retinal system are involved

We report the clinical features and the course of traumatic corneal endothelial rings by trauma. Fourteen eyes (of fourteen patients) with traumatic endothelial rings (twelve cases of BB shot injury), were enrolled in this study. With median follow-up interval of 50 weeks, initial and final best corrected visual acuity, presence of combined injuries such as gross hyphema, and time of disappearance of traumatic endothelial rings were recorded. And specular microscopic examination was performed. The duration of existence of traumatic endothelial rings was mean 4.6 days. On the specular microscopic examination, the count of corneal endothelial cells in the injured eye decreased by mean 16.8% (ranged from 1 to 56%) than that in the opposite unjnjured eye. The duration of existence of traumatic endothelial rings was 3.5 days in the group without combined angle recession and was 6.1 days in the group with combined angle recession. We suggest that the possibility of traumatic corneal endothelial rings and resultant endothelial cell loss and their clinical potential should be always kept in mind in ocular trauma, particularly BB shot injury.
