RESUMEN

The laser is once again poised to revolutionize ophthalmology, this time in the field of lacrimal surgery. At many centers, transnasal laser-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy is currently being performed and evaluated as a less invasive method for lacrimal bypass surgery than the traditional method. We have performed this new operation on ten patients. Advantages include avoidance of a cutaneous scar, reduction of surgical trauma and bleeding, minimal postoperative pain, and a shortened period of recovery. The surgical success rate of 90% is comparable to that of conventional dacryocystorhinostomy

RESUMEN

Silicons represents an organosilicone polymer, which is an inert compound compatible with organic materials. It is available in both solid and liquid forms. We describe the chemistry and the physical properties of silicone polymers, their applications in the management of glaucoma, oculoplastic conditions, complicated retinal detachment, and in the manufacture of optical lenses

RESUMEN

Seventeen eyes with retinal detachment due to macular hole associated with high myopia and significant staphyloma and chorioretinal atrophy at the posterior pole were treated successfully. Our method involves the use of an encircling band, pars plana vitrectomy, fluid/silicone oil exchange, internal drainage of subretinal fluid and prone positioning of the patient for 24 hours. Macular coagulation and macular buckling were not necessary. In all eyes the retina remained flat during follow-up periods ranging from 6 to 20 months
