RESUMEN

In normal subjects fed western-mixed diets, in the fasting state, 39.6% of the variance of calciuria is accounted for by net acid excretion and 4% by sulfaturia. In the postprandial period, net acid accounts for 6.9% and sulfaturia for 11.8% of the variance of calciuria. As expected, after a load of ammonium chloride, net acid excretion exceeded the importance of sulfaturia (36.2% vs. 8.4%) and the opposite was observed after DL-methionine load (1.5% and 46.2%). A group of normal subjects fed vegetarian diets was also investigated. The excretion of the three variables measured were significantly reduced in this group when compared with that of the former group. In the fasting state the variance of calciuria was accounted mainly by net acid excretion (85.7%). In the postprandial state net acid (4.9%) and sulfate (2.2%) had much less importance as determinants of calciuria. It is concluded that in spite of their metabolic relationship, net acid and sulfate excretions are independent determinants of calciuria. The relative importance of each variable changes as a function of metabolic circumstances

Average daily excretion of Indican in urine of 42 healthy elderly men, av. age 69.9 +/- 5.0 years, (60 observations) was 60.7 +/- 17.4 mg/24 hrs. This is slightly higher than reported values for younger subjects. Average ethereal S elimination by Indian subjects has varied from 72-150 mg/day. Indican is the chief ethereal S eliminated in urine. Other forms of S excreted by elderly subjects were: Inorganic S 720 +/- 150 mg; Ethereal S 74 +/- 22 mg. Indican in them was 53.8 +/- 17.4 mg. This shows that the remaining 20 mg or about 1/4 of the ethereal S is eliminated in urine in other forms. Relationship with age, diet, common disorders along with findings in literature etc. are discussed.

RESUMEN

The urinary sulfur/creatinine ratio and urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio of Thai soldiers and schoolchildren from Nakhon Nayok, 100 km northeast of Bangkok, the Lam-takong resettlement area and the Kohn Kaen resettlement and irrigation area northeast of Thailand were determined. As reference group healthy children from the University school in Khon Kaen were selected. The urinary urea N/creatinine ratio was significantly lower for the children from Nakhon Nayok, the Lam-takong resettlement and the Khon Kaen resettlement and irrigation area when compared with the reference group. The ratio values of the soldiers was significantly lower than the ratio of every group of children. The urinary sulfur/creatinine ratio for the children in Nakhon Nayok was lower and for the children in the Lam-takong and Khon Kaen resettlements were significantly lower than the ratio of the reference group. For the reference group the normal range for urea N/creatinine ratio was between 4.8 and 14.5 and for sulfur/creatinine ratio between 0.40 and 1.40.
