RÉSUMÉ
Nitrogen is a crucial element for all living organisms especially plants which rely on substantial nitrogen quantities to sustain their growth and productivity. Crop production is greatly influenced by nitrogen consumption efficiency and a significant amount of nitrogen fertilizers is used to increase yield. Approximately half of N fertilizers are not utilized by the crops and are lost to the environment by polluting water sources or by releasing pollutants into the atmosphere. From the rhizosphere, plants absorb nitrogen in the form of nitrate (NO3-), ammonium (NH4+), or organic nitrogen (amino acids and urea). Plants exhibit an array of sensing and adaptive mechanisms to respond to the diverse nitrogen nutrition conditions which include morphological and physiological responses. Two primary systems govern nitrogen uptake in plants: the High-affinity transport system (HATS) and the Low-affinity transport system (LATS). Nitrate transporters fall into two categories, Nitrate Transporter 1 (NRT1) and Nitrate Transporter 2 (NRT2) transporters, Chloride Channel Family (CLC) transporters and Slow Anion Associated Channel Homologs (SLAC/SLAHs). The ammonium transporter family includes Ammonium Transporter 1 (AMT1) and Ammonium Transporter 2 (AMT2) transporters. The uptake of organic nitrogen is facilitated through amino acid and urea uptake and transport systems. In fluctuating environmental conditions, plants employ nitrogen response mechanisms to fine-tune homeostasis. A comprehensive understanding of these regulatory mechanisms holds the potential to yield valuable insights for the development of crops with enhanced nitrogen use efficiency.

A field experiment was conducted in Trivandrum district during June 2021 to January 2022 to evaluate the effect of chitin on growth, yield and secondary metabolite production in turmeric. Soil application of chitin at 5 g per plant was done at 60 and 180 days after transplanting, while untreated plants served as control. Observations were recorded on effect of chitin on growth, defense enzymes, yield, secondary metabolites and disease incidence. Results of the study confirmed significant enhancement in growth, yield and secondary metabolite production on chitin application compared to the untreated control. Significant increase in shoot weight and rhizome weight was observed at six months after transplanting in response to chitin application. Fresh and dry rhizome yield per plant increased by 60.16% and 65.97% respectively, over the control. The defense enzyme activity and chlorophyll content were significantly higher in plants subjected to chitin application, compared to the control. Chitin treatment enhanced volatile oil and oleoresin content by 1.39 and 1.41 times and curcumin content by 21%, over the control. The results confirmed that chitin is a potent biostimulant that can be used for growth, yield and quality enhancement in turmeric.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of running in normal relative humidity (RH = 53%) and very high RH (94%) on hydration status (HS), sweating rate (SR), heart rate (HR), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Fourteen men (25.2 ± 6.6 yrs) performed two sessions of treadmill running. Body mass (normal RH: -1.35%, very high RH: -1.65%) HS (normal RH: -14.8%; very high RH: -20.8%) were reduced while RPE (normal RH: +26%; very high RH: +28%) and HR were increased (very high RH: +5.8%: 20-40 min, +3.1%: 40-60 min, +3%: 20-40 min; +2.3%: 40-60 min for normal RH). As expected, SR was significantly greater during very high RH (-20/8%) compared to normal RH (-14.8%). Running in very high RH at moderate temperature has a greater negative impact on SR, HS, body mass, HR, RPE in men than running in normal RH at the same temperature, which places the runner in greater danger of heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

AIM: This study investigated the correlation between post-exercise hypotension (PEH) and chronic blood pressure (BP) reduction in older women after a resistance training (RT) program. METHODS: Twenty-five older women (≥60 years) performed a RT program for 8 weeks, 3x/week consisting of 3 sets of 8-12 repetitions maximum in 8 exercises. Acute and chronic BP measurements were performed using automatic equipment, in which acute BP was measured before and after 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min following the sixth exercise session, while chronic BP was measured pre and post-training. RESULTS: Significant decrease for systolic blood pressure (SBP) was observed after the intervention period, however, the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) did not change. To acute changes in BP, SBP decreased at all times after a single RT session, while DBP increased after 40 min. The reduction for SBP after a single RT session at baseline showed positive and significant correlations with the reductions in basal SBP observed after the 8 weeks of RT, the strongest correlations were observed at 20 min. A linear relationship between the magnitude of change in chronic SBP and the 20 min for acute SBP, and 30 min for acute DBP of post-exercise was observed. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that acute BP lowering after RT session is a reliable predictor of chronic BP response to exercise training, and 20 min of resting, after RT training, is enough to indicate chronic response of BP as this measure was highly associated with chronic BP lowering in older women.(AU)

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of training volume (1 vs. 3 sets) on lower-body muscle strength in untrained young men. Methodsː Eighteen untrained young men were recruited and their legs were trained with 1 or 3 sets (in a contralateral design) for 6 weeks, using a knee extension machine. Isokinetic peak torque and one repetition maximum (1RM) were assessed at pre- and post-training. Resultsː There was a similar improvement in the 1RM strength (1SET: +14.8% vs. 3SET: 16.3%, P > 0.05) and peak torque (1SET: +8.1% vs. 3SET: 9.3%, P > 0.05) for both conditions from pre- to post-training. The effect size (ES) for the change in 1RM was moderate for both conditions (1SET: 1.39 vs. 3SET: 1.41), and peak torque was trivial and small for 1SET (0.47) and 3SET (0.55), respectively. Additionally, there were no significant (P > 0.05) differences in the dietary intakes from pre- to post-training. Conclusionsː Our results indicate that 1 set is as effective as 3 sets for increasing lower-body muscle strength after a short-term RT period (6 weeks) in untrained young men.(AU)

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the validity of methods to assess body fat in children and adolescents using a systematic review. METHODS: The search was conducted by two independent researchers using the MEDLINE, BioMed Central, SciELO and LILACS electronic databases. For inclusion, the articles should be written in English or Portuguese, andmust have usedmulti-compartment models as the criterion measure of the model, with body fat measurement of whole body in non-athlete children and adolescents. RESULTS: A preliminary search resulted in 832 studies. After all selection steps were performed, 12 articles were included. The selected studies were published between 1997 and 2010, whose samples consisted of children and adolescents with levels of relative body fat ranging from 20.7% to 41.4%. The methods used were: dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (58.3%), isotope dilution (41.6%), skinfold thickness (33.3%), hydrostatic weighing (25%), bioelectrical impedance analysis (25%), air displacement plethysmography (16.6%), and total body electrical conductivity (8.3%). High quality of bee pollen for commercial purpose is required. In order to attend the consumer with the best identification of the botanical and floral origin of the product, 25 bee pollen batches were investigated using two techniques of pollen grain preparation. The first started to identify pollen loads of different colors in two grams of each well mixed batch, and the second to identify pollen grains in a pool made of all the pollen loads comprised in two grams. The best result was obtained by this last technique, when a pollen grain suspension was dropped on a microscope slide and circa 500 pollen grains were counted per sample. This analysis resulted in the recognition of monofloral and bifloral pollen batches, while the use of the first technique resulted in all samples receiving a heterofloral diagnosis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the acute hormonal response to resistance training sessions with different exercises order in men. Ten recreationally trained men (22.4 ± 2.7 years; 80.3 ± 5.7 kg; 180 ± 8 cm; 21.5 ± 0.3 kg.m-2) participated in the study. All subjects completed two experimental protocols with different exercises order. The exercise sequences were composed by three sets using 70%of 1RM for each exercise with 2 minutes rest between sets and exercises and separated by seven days between them. Exercise order for SEQA was bench press (BP), lat-pull down (LPD), seated shoulder press(SP), biceps curl (BC) and tríceps extension (TE). The exercises order for SEQB order were TE, BC, SP,LPD and BP. The blood variables analyzed were: growth hormone (GH), cortisol before (Pre) and immediately after (Post) each exercise session. The results shown that SEQA promoted higher and significantly increases in GH concentration immediately post session, as compared with SEQB. The cortisol concentration presented a significantly increase when compared pre and post moments for both sequences. However, there were not statistically differences when compared SEQA and SEQB post session. In conclusion, seems that exercises order can influences the GH responses, being exercises for large muscle group promoted a significantly increase in this hormone than exercises for small muscle group at the beginning of training session.

Dipteran larvae were collected from rabbit (Oryctolagus cunniculus L.) carcasses during the four seasons in 2005 in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The larvae were fed ground beef at ambient temperatures following collection from carcasses. The development of each species under these conditions was estimated. The most abundant species in the carcasses were Lucilia eximia (Wiedemann) and Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) (Calliphoridae), and they were found in all seasons. The data were fitted to a linear model that describes the relationship between temperature and linear developmental rating. These two species are primary forensic indicators in southern Brazil. Other species such as Hemilucilia semidiaphana (Rondani) (Calliphoridae), Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Wulp), Muscina stabulans (Fallen) (Muscidae), and Fannia pusio (Wiedemann) (Fanniidae) were forensically less important because they only occurred in high frequency in certain seasons and during the first days of carcass decomposition.

Purpose: To study the use of low temp ophthalmic cautery tip in performing continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis and the effect of heat produced by cautery on the corneal endothelium Materials and Methods: The tip of an ordinary low temp ophthalmic cautery was improvised with the use of stylet of a Simcoe I&A, fashioned like a Sinskey IOL manipulator. 20 rabbits were used in this experiment -10 right eyes served as cases and 10 left eyes as controls. In the experimental eyes, viscoelastic was injected prior to a 7mm capsulorhexis; in the control eyes, no capsulorhexis was done. The cornea of both experimental and control were removed in toto and submitted for histopathologic studies Results: A complete capsulorhexis was performed in all 10 experimental eyes. The anterior capsular flap adheres to the advancing cautery tip; continuous and circular capsulorhexis was observed. There was no significant difference observed between the experimental and control groups regarding endothelial cell loss Conclusion: The modified low temp ophthalmic cautery tip produced a complete capsulorhexis, with no effect on the corneal endothelium.

Dry Eye is one of the most common eye disorders. Although this occurs in both men and women at any age, women in their menopausic years are often afflicted with this condition. This may be due to the loss of hormonal support after menopause. The purpose of this study is to determine the tear function of menopausic women and also to determine whether there is a correlation between advancing age and tear function. 62 menopausic women between the ages of 55-78 years underwent four different types of tear function tests (Schirmer Test, Tear Breakup Time, Vital Staining with Fluorescein Dye and the Ferning Test). These women were not under any type of medication. Results showed that in both the Schirmer Test and the Tear Breakup Time Test, there was a significant decrease in the tear function as age progressed. Although there were no statistically significant changes in the corneal uptake with increasing age, it was noted that the number of subjects with significant fluorescein dye uptake increased in the older age group. Likewise, there was no significant change in the Ferning test although a decreasing trend in the ferning pattern was observed as the age progressed. Based on the data collected, menopause and aging play a vital role in the development of dry eyes. Although the actual process remains uncertain, this can be attributed to the changes in the sex hormonal levels in menopausic women. (Author)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been reported in association with some neurological diseases that affect the basal ganglia such as Tourette's syndrome, Sydenham's chorea, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease. Furthermore, studies such as neuroimaging, suggest a role of the basal ganglia in the pathophysiology of OCD. The aim of this paper is to describe the association of OCD and several neurologic disorders affecting the basal ganglia, report the existing evidences of the role of the basal ganglia in the pathophysiology of OCD, and analyze the mechanisms probably involved in this pathophysiology.
