Résumé

With a view to evaluate the cardioprotective effect of ethanolic extract of S. anacardium nut and the possible interaction with propranolol against isoproterenol induced myocardial damage in rats, female Sprague-Dawley rats were pre-treated with propranolol (10 mg/kg for 7 days), low and high doses of S. anacardium (100 and 500 mg/kg for 21 days) and their combination orally and subsequently subjected to isoproterenol administration (150 mg/kg, sc) for two consecutive days. The influence of prophylactic treatment was analysed by quantification of biomarkers and antioxidants, electocardiographic parameters and histopathological observations. The activities of lactate dehydrogenase and creatinine phosphokinase-MB were reduced in serum and raised in heart tissue with concurrent elevation in superoxide dismutase and catalase activities as well as reduction in thiobarbituric acid reactive species levels significantly in all treated groups compared to isoproterenol group. Similarly, electrocardiographic changes were restored to normalcy in all treated groups. To conclude, combination of high dose of S. anacardium with propranolol was found to be most effective in alleviating the abnormal conditions induced by isoproterenol.

Résumé

Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the immunomodulatory action of methanolic extract of Moringa oleifera (MEMO) in an experimental model of immunity. The cellular immunity was evaluated using neutrophil adhesion test, cyclophosphamide induced neutropenia and carbon clearance assay, whereas, humoral immunity was tested by mice lethality test, serum immunoglobulin estimation and indirect haemagglutination assay in animals. Administration of MEMO (250 and 750 mg/kg, po) and Ocimum sanctum (100 mg/kg, po) significantly increased the levels of serum immunoglobulins and also prevented the mortality induced by bovine Pasteurella multocida in mice. They also increased significantly the circulating antibody titre in indirect haemagglunation test. Moreover, MEMO produced significant increase in adhesion of neutrophils, attenuation of cyclophosphamideinduced neutropenia and an increase in phagocytic index in carbon clearance assay. From the above results, it can be concluded that MEMO stimulate both cellular and humoral immune response. However, low dose of MEMO was found to be more effective than the high dose.

Résumé

The purpose of current study was to evaluate the influence of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) on protective effects of garlic homogenate (GH) in rats subjected to myocardial damage induced by ischemia-reperfusion (IRI) and isoproterenol (ISO). Female Wistar albino rats were treated with GH at three different doses of 125; 250 and 500 mg/kg orally for 30 days and HCTZ (10 mg/kg, p.o.) was incorporated in the interactive groups during the last seven days of GH treatment. At the end of treatment, animals were subjected to IRI or ISO induced myocardial damage in their respective models. The GH 250 mg/kg was found to dislodge the effect of ISO and IRI on superoxide dismutase & catalase and retained the activities of LDH and CK-MB. Adding HCTZ improved biochemical, antioxidant and histological status of myocardium during myocardial damage. Since no toxic effects were observed, HCTZ may safely be used to improve GH therapy.
