Résumé

A case of sebaceous adenoma in the region of the medial canthus causing proptosis is presented along with a review of the medical literature. The clinicopathological aspects of the tumour are discussed. The mode of treatment was surgical excision. A six month follow-up showed a reduction in the proptosis with no recurrence.

Résumé

Cyclic AMP binding in the extract of E. coli was taken as a measure of cAMP receptor protein (CRP) present in the cells. The gamma-irradiation of cells caused a dose-dependent inhibition of cAMP binding activity indicating that CRP gene is affected by gamma-irradiation. The binding activity in cells irradiated with 240 Gy gamma-ray dose remained unaltered by post-irradiation incubation. This supports previous finding that the enhanced inhibition of the L-arabinose isomerase synthesizing capacity, following incubation of gamma-irradiated cells at higher doses, must be due to a different cause than the catabolite repression.

Résumé

Transport of cyclic AMP across Escherichia coli membrane was studied using membrane vesicles. Uptake of cyclic AMP was measured using normally oriented vesicles, whereas uptake in everted vesicles was taken as a measure of the efflux of cyclic AMP. Ultraviolet irradiation of the cells led to an inhibition of both uptake and efflux of cyclic AMP across the membrane. The presence of cyclic AMP in the growth medium prior to ultra-violet irradiation caused an enhancement of the uptake and efflux. The uptake and efflux of cyclic AMP were less in vesicles from glucose grown cells as compared to the uptake and efflux by the vesicles prepared from glycerol grown cells. Similarly both uptake and efflux of cyclic AMP were more in vesicles prepared from cells grown on glycerol or glucose in the presence of cyclic AMP than in vesicles from cells grown in absence of cyclic AMP. It is suggested that the number of cyclic AMP carrier molecules were reduced in cells under catabolite repression by glucose as well as by ultra-violet irradiation.

Résumé

National Cadet Corps (N.C.C.) were tested for assessing their physical efficiency level with special reference to respiratory performances. The height and weight of the cadets from hilly and plain areas were noted to be similar indicating alike attainment of growth. The mean values of all pulmonary function tests (FVC, IC, ERV+TV, FEV1, MEFR) except MVV were observed to be similar in both the group of subjects. The mean value of MVV was significantly higher in subjects from hilly area than that in those from plain area.

Résumé

The participants of Basketball in the Inter-University competition were tested for assessing the physical efficiency level with special reference to respiratory and strength performances. The simple anthropometric measurements like height and weight of these subjects were noted to be higher than those of average healthy nonathlete populations of India. The socio-economic status of these subjects was assessed by standard questionnaire method and they were from families having income range between Rs. 85/-165/ per capita per month. The respiratory performances viz. FVC, FEV1, MVV, MEFR, PEFR were all noted to be high in these sportsmen in comparison to those of age-matched healthy Indians. The grip strength test values were similar to those of hockey and soccer players. This study, therefore, indicated more efficiency in basketball players than in the age-matched average non-athlete healthy Indians.
