RÉSUMÉ

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogenic and nosocomial bacterium responsible for serious healthcare-associated infections mainly for its resistance to antibiotics. Against this problem researches for new active substances must be continued to overcome nosocomial infections caused by P. aeruginosa. Essential oils extracted from medicinal plants are a good alternative thanks to their proved antimicrobial activities. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of five essential oils obtained from plants that grow naturally in western Algeria against antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa strains. The studied essential oils, obtained by hydrodistillation, were analysed for the determination of their composition using GC-MS. The antibacterial activity of the studied essential oils was evaluated by disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods against fourteen P. aeruginosa strains, of which thirteen have been isolated from clinical sources and one reference strain. The obtained results show that Cistus munbyi and Thymus lanceolatus essential oils possess a good activity against antibiotic-resistant PP. aeruginosa strains. While Origanum glandulosum, Ammoides verticillata, and Thymbra capitata were less active respectively. Thus, C. munbyi and T. lanceolatus essential oils can be considered as good alternatives treatment against nosocomial infections caused by P. aeruginosa

Objective: To evaluate some essential oils in treatment of intractable oral infections, principally caused by biofilm of multidrug-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), such as persistent endodontic infections in which their treatment exhibits a real challenge for dentists. Methods: Ten chemically analyzed essential oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against sensitive and resistant clinical strains of E. faecalis in both planktonic and biofilm state using two methods, disk diffusion and broth micro-dilution. Results: Studied essential oils showed a good antimicrobial activity and high ability in E. faecalis biofilm eradication, whether for sensitive or multidrug-resistant strains, especially those of Origanum glandulosum and Thymbra capitata with interesting minimum inhibitory concentration, biofilm inhibitory concentration, and biofilm eradication concentration values which doesn't exceed 0.063%, 0.75%, and 1.5%, respectively. Conclusions: Findings of this study indicate that essential oils extracted from aromatic plants can be used in treatment of intractable oral infections, especially caused by biofilm of multidrug-resistant E. faecalis.

RÉSUMÉ

In this work, we evaluated the anti-MRSA activity of essential oils obtained from four Algerian medicinal plants which are: Ammoides verticillata, Origanum vulgare subsp. glandulosum, Lavandula multifida, and Thymus munbyanus subsp. ciliatus. The anti-MRSA activity was evaluated by the technique of agar diffusion and determination of MICs. We also studied the kinetics of destruction of these oils against MRSA strain ATCC 43300. The four essential oils showed a good anti-MRSA activity. Oils with the highest activity are; Origanum vulgare subsp. glandulosum, Thymus munbyanus subsp. ciliatus, Lavandula multifida and Ammoides verticillata respectively. The kinetics of destruction of all essential oils against MRSA ATCC 43300 strain is dependent on concentration. The Concentration 1% allows a total destruction; while the concentration 0.5% was bactericidal only with Origanum vulgare, whereas the concentration 0.25% and 0.125% have had a low destruction respectively. We concluded that the essential oils can be used as an anti-MRSA.
