Objetivo - Este estudo teve por objetivo identificar as características físicas, psicossociais e comportamentais de obesos mórbidos antes e depois da cirurgia bariátrica. Métodos - A amostra foi composta por 33 indivíduos de ambos os sexos, com idades entre 23 e 61 anos (40± 10 anos), submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica no Hospital da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (HU/UFSC) em Florianópolis, SC. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista e para análise, aplicou-se estatística descritiva e o teste de Wilcoxon, com um nível de significância de 5%. Resultados - Houve complicações pós-cirúrgicas em 15,2% dos indivíduos e os sintomas de maior ocorrência após a cirurgia foram vômitos e queda de cabelo (66,6%). No entanto, todos os indivíduos disseram estar satisfeitos com a cirurgia e a maioria relatou satisfação com o peso e imagem corporal. A média geral do Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) dos indivíduos antes da cirurgia foi de 48,57± 7,83 kg/m2, reduzindo para 32,42 ± 5,98 kg/m2 depois da cirurgia (p < 0,01). Quando divididos por grupos, observou-se redução significativa nas médias do IMC após a cirurgia nos grupos: G1, G3 e G4, destacando maior significância (p < 0,01) nos três primeiros meses pós-operatório e após 12 meses. Conclusão - A cirurgia bariátrica demonstrou efetividade no tratamento da obesidade, promovendo significativa redução do peso, embora acompanhada de sintomas e/ou complicações pós-cirúrgicas. Recomenda-se o acompanhamento por profissionais especializados e seguimento das orientações para que os benefícios sejam maiores e superem as possíveis complicações.
Objective - This study aims to identify the physical, psychosocial and behavioral features of morbid obese people before and after bariatric surgery. Methods - The sample consisted of 33 individuals of both sexes, with age between 23 and 61 years old (40 ± 10 years) who have undertaken bariatric surgery at the Federal University Hospital of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis, SC. The data were collected by interview and to analysis, were utilized descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon test, with the significance level of 5%. Results - There were postoperative complications in 15.2% of individuals and the most frequent symptoms were vomit and hair loss (66.6%). However, all the subjects said to be satisfied with the surgery and most reported satisfaction with weight and body image. The average Body Mass Index (BMI) of the subjects before the surgery was 48,57 ± 7,83 Kg/m2, reducing to 32,42 ± 5,98 Kg/m2 after the surgery (p < 0,01). When in groups, it was observed a significant reduction on BMI after surgery of groups G1, G3 and G4, highlighting most significance (p < 0,01) on the first three months postoperatively and after 12 months. Conclusion - The bariatric surgery showed effectiveness on obesity treatment, causing significant weight reduction, although it brings symptoms and/or post surgical complications. It is recommended to follow up by specialists and follow the guidelines to go through the possible complications and for the better benefits.
