Résumé
The electronic absorption spectra of some new assyrnmetrical Schiff bases derived from 7-formyl-8-hydroxyquinoline[FHQ] with different diamines and beta-diketones are investigated in organic solvents of varying polarities. The important bands in the IR spectra of the compounds as well as the main signals of the [1]H NMR spectra are discussed in relation to molecular structure. Mass spectra and the mechanism leading to different fragment ions of the compounds are also discussed

Antimicrobial therapy for chronic tonsillar infections is one of the commonest practices in everyday work. For proper reliable cures the most probable infecting organisms must be identified. The aim of this work was to find out if there is any correlation between bacteriological examination of swabs taken from the surface of the tonsils and fine needle aspirates taken from the core of the tonsils in cases of chronic tonsillitis. The study included 40 children diagnosed to have chronic tonsillitis and ranging in age between 5 and 15 years. Swabs from the surface of the tonsils and aspirates from the core of the tonsils were inoculated in blood agar [aerobically and anaerobically] and McConkey's medium. Direct gram stained films were also done. Isolated bacteria were examined for colonial morphology. In 55% of cases the organisms isolated from the core were different from those isolated from the surface. Nisseria and Streptococcus viridans were the most common organisms in both surface [75%] and core [50%] cultures. The commonest pathogenic organism was Streptococcus pyogens in 30% of surface cultures and 35% of core cultures

The aim of this study was to throw some light on the effects of cigarette smoking on nasal and pharyngeal mucosa. The study included 60 males aged between 20 and 45 years. They were 50 heavy cigarette smokers and 10 nonsmokers as normal controls and all were scheduled for ear surgery. Detailed smoking histories were taken and complete general and otorhinolaryngological examinations were done followed by histopathological examination of biopsies and brush smears taken from the nose and pharynx under general anethesia. Cigarette smoking was found to affect the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa badly and leads to certain pathological changes starting from mild inflammatory reaction with recurrent infection up to epithelial changes in the form of hyperplasia, metaplasia, atrophy and cellular dysplasia

This study was conducted on 50 children diagnosed as having chronic middle ear effusion [M.E.E.] depending on full history [no response to medical treatment for 3 months], clinical and audiological examination. Pure tone audiometry and tympanometry were done for every child followed by myringotomy [with detection of the nature of effusion] and tube insertion. Adenoidectomy was done when there was adenoid hypertrophy. Tympanometry was found to be more sensitive in detection of M.E.E. and its nature than pure tone audiometry [which can help diagnosis of mucoid M.E.E. as it is associated with greater degree of hearing loss]. Application of tympanostomy tubes is recommended in cases with type B tympanogram when associated with hearing loss more than 35 dB

The effect of inferior turbinectomies which is a quite common procedure in ENT practice on the mucociliary function of the nose is studied using the saccharine and indigocarmine tests. These tests were performed on 20 control and 80 patients divided into 2 subgroups. The first subgroup did submucous resection of their inferior turbinates. The second subgroup did total inferior turbinectomy. The MTT for saccharine and indigocarmine showed a very highly significant improvement after 1 week and 1 month in the first subgroup. In the second subgroup no change was found. Nasal obstruction improvement was 80% and 97.8% in the first and second groups, respectively, after 1 month postoperatively. After 12 to 18 months later still 50% of the first group had no nasal obstruction while 97.5% of the second group had the same result

A high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of floctafenine [I] and its hydrolytic degradation product, floctafenic acid [II], was described. Analysis was carried out using a 10 mum C18 reversed phase column with UV detection at 350 nm. The mobile phase consisted of 0.058 sodium acetate: acetonitrile: methanol [2: 1: 1, v/v] adjusted to pH 5 and pumped isocratically at a flow rate of 1.5 ml/min. Calibration curves were rectilinear over the concentration range of 0.125 - 1.250 mug/ml for floctafenine and 0.0625 - 0.6250 mug/ml for floctafenic acid, with minimum detectability of 0.05 and 0.02 mug/ml, respectively. The proposed method was applied to commercial tables containing floctafenine. The results obtained were accurate and precise
