Résumé

Background@#Cold atmospheric plasma is a novel innovative approach for wound care, and it is currently underrepresented in veterinary medicine. @*Objectives@#To investigate the efficacy and safety of using cold atmospheric microwave plasma (CAMP) as an adjunct therapy for wound healing in dogs and cats. @*Methods@#Wound healing outcomes were retrospectively analyzed using clinical records of client-owned dogs and cats who were first managed through standard wound care alone (pre-CAMP period) and subsequently via CAMP therapy (CAMP period). The degree of wound healing was estimated based on wound size and a modified wound scoring system. @*Results@#Of the 27 acute and chronic wounds included in the analysis, 81.48% showed complete healing after the administration of CAMP as an adjunct therapy to standard care. Most wounds achieved complete healing in < 5 weeks. Compared with the pre-CAMP period, the rate of wound healing significantly increased every week in the CAMP period in terms of in wound size (first week, p < 0.001; second week, p = 0.012; third week, p < 0.001) and wound score (first week, p < 0.001; second week, p < 0.001; third week, p = 0.001). No adverse events were noted except for mild discomfort and transient erythema. @*Conclusions@#CAMP is a well-tolerated therapeutic option with immense potential to support the treatment of wounds of diverse etiology in small animal practice. Further research is warranted to establish specific criteria for CAMP treatment according to wound characteristics.

Résumé

Background and Objectives@#Zonulin is a human protein that regulates intercellular tight junctions and increases the permeability of the intestinal epithelium. In light of the increasing focus on zonulin’s role in numerous chronic inflammatory diseases, this study aimed to investigate whether differences exist in serum zonulin levels and bronchial epithelium zonulin expression in vivo between asthma and normal groups, using a mouse model. @*Methods@#Sixteen mice were utilized in this study, divided evenly between the normal and asthma groups. Serum zonulin levels, the expression of zonulin antibody in the bronchial epithelium, and serum cytokine levels were evaluated in both groups. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and RNA in situ hybridization were utilized for the analysis. @*Results@#The asthma group exhibited significantly higher levels of serum zonulin. High zonulin antibody expression was also observed in the bronchial epithelium of the asthma group. Given that our mouse model demonstrated a significant difference in interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-6 between the normal and asthma groups, zonulin may be associated not only with type 2 responses but also with various subtypes of asthma. Further studies are required to investigate this relationship in greater detail. @*Conclusion@#Zonulin may play a role in the complex pathophysiology of asthma and could serve as a biomarker in various asthma-related situations.

Résumé

Purpose@#Differences in the impact of obesity and metabolic health status on the risk of gallbladder polyp (GBP) remain uncertain. Herein, we aimed to compare the risk of GBP ≥5 mm among individuals with different phenotypes based on obesity and metabolic health status. @*Materials and Methods@#A cohort of 253485 asymptomatic adults who underwent abdominal ultrasonography screening were categorized into the following four groups according to obesity and metabolic health status: 1) metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO), 2) metabolically unhealthy and non-obese (MUNO), 3) metabolically healthy but obese (MHO), and 4) metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO). @*Results@#The prevalences of GBP ≥5 mm were 2.4%, 3.1%, 3.7%, and 4.0% in the MHNO, MUNO, MHO, and MUO groups, respectively. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR) values for prevalence of GBP ≥5 mm by comparing the MUNO, MHO, and MUO with the MHNO group were 1.11 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.04–1.19], 1.30 (95% CI, 1.15–1.47), and 1.37 (95% CI, 1.28– 1.45), respectively. The risk of GBP ≥5 mm in the MHO group was significantly higher than that in the MUNO group, but not significantly different from that in the MUO group. @*Conclusion@#Obesity and metabolic unhealthiness appear to be independent risk factors for the prevalence of GBP, and the impact of obesity is greater than that of metabolic unhealthiness, suggesting that maintaining both normal weight and metabolic health may help reduce the risk of GBP.

Résumé

Background/Aims@#We aimed to determine whether hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains an important risk factor for gallbladder polyps (GBPs) in the current context of reduced prevalence of these infections. @*Methods@#The cohort included 392,913 asymptomatic adults who underwent abdominal ultrasonography (US). @*Results@#The prevalence of GBP sized ≥ 5 mm, ≥ 10 mm, and overall (< 5, 5–9 and ≥ 10 mm) was 2.9%, 0.1%, and 12.8%, respectively. The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb), and hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV) positivity was 3.2%, 26.7%, and 0.1%, respectively. The GBP risk was significantly increased in HBsAg-positive individuals, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.66 (95% confidence interval, 1.49–1.85) for GBP ≥ 5 mm, 2.39 (1.53–3.75) for GBP ≥ 10 mm, and 1.49 (1.41–1.59) for overall, whereas there was no significant association between anti-HCV positivity and GBP risk. The GBP risk did not increase significantly in individuals who tested negative for HBsAg but positive for HBcAb. @*Conclusions@#The presence of HBsAg may be an independent risk factor for GBP development in the current context of a indecreasing prevalence of HBsAg positivity. A more comprehensive evaluation of GBP during abdominal US surveillance of HBsAg-positive individuals may be necessary.

Résumé

Purpose@#Several previous studies and case reports have reported ethanol-induced symptoms in patients receiving anticancer drugs containing ethanol. Most docetaxel formulations contain ethanol as a solvent. However, there are insufficient data on ethanol-induced symptoms when docetaxel-containing ethanol is administered. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency and pattern of ethanol-induced symptoms during and after docetaxel administration. The secondary purpose was to explore the risk factors for ethanol-induced symptoms. @*Materials and Methods@#This was a prospective, multicenter, observational study. The participants filled out ethanol-induced symptom questionnaire on the day of chemotherapy and the following day. @*Results@#Data from 451 patients were analyzed. The overall occurrence rate of ethanol-induced symptoms was 44.3% (200/451 patients). The occurrence rate of facial flushing was highest at 19.7% (89/451 patients), followed by nausea in 18.2% (82/451 patients), and dizziness in 17.5% (79/451 patients). Although infrequent, unsteady walking and impaired balance occurred in 4.2% and 3.3% of patients, respectively. Female sex, presence of underlying disease, younger age, docetaxel dose, and docetaxel-containing ethanol amount were significantly associated with the occurrence of ethanol-induced symptoms. @*Conclusion@#The occurrence of ethanol-induced symptoms was not low in patients receiving docetaxel-containing ethanol. Physicians need to pay more attention to the occurrence of ethanol-induced symptoms and prescribe ethanol-free or low-ethanol-containing formulations to high-risk patients.

Résumé

The combination of oxycodone and naloxone is useful for cancer pain management. Naloxone, as a pure opioid antagonist, cannot be used simultaneously with opioids. However, owing to its low bioavailability, it can be used in an oral composite formulation. We present the case of a 55-year-old man with gastric cancer who experienced severe opioid withdrawal syndrome (OWS) triggered by oxycodonealoxone that was successfully managed with dexmedetomidine. He had been in a stable condition on intravenous morphine to alleviate cancer pain. Intravenous morphine was switched to oral oxycodonealoxone for discharge from the hospital. The patient suddenly developed restlessness, heartburn, and violent behavior 30 minutes after taking oxycodonealoxone. We attempted sedation with midazolam and propofol, but paradoxical agitation and desaturation occurred. Next, we tried dexmedetomidine and the patient showed a decreased heart rate and reduced agitation. The patient was eventually stabilized by increasing the dose of dexmedetomidine. This report informs clinicians of the possibility of OWS when switching from opioids to oxycodonealoxone, which can be overcome with the appropriate use of sedatives and dexmedetomidine depending on the patient’s condition.

Résumé

Purpose@#The purpose of this study was to determine whether deoxyhemoglobin changes were associated with admission duration in carbon monoxide (CO)-poisoned patients. @*Methods@#This retrospective study included 181 patients who were able to breathe by themselves after CO poisoning. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed to measure their deoxyhemoglobin levels. Their baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes during hospitalization in the emergency department (ED) were collected and compared. To assess changes in deoxyhemoglobin levels, blood samples were taken immediately after patients presented to the ED and then again after 6 hours. For statistical analysis, logistic regression was utilized to determine the effect of deoxyhemoglobin changes on admission duration. @*Results@#The incidence rates of hypocapnia and hypoxemia at presentation after acute CO poisoning were 28.7% and 43.6%, respectively. Moreover, the magnitude of increasing deoxyhemoglobin levels in patients with hypoxemia (2.1 [1.7–3.1], p<0.001) and changes in deoxyhemoglobin levels appeared to have an impact on the length of hospitalization in the ED (odds ratio, 1.722; 95% confidence interval, 0.547–0.952; p<0.001). @*Conclusion@#In patients with acute CO poisoning, deoxyhemoglobin levels appeared to increase in those with hypoxemia, which in turn was associated with prolonged hospitalization.

Résumé

Objective@#Computed tomography enterography (CTE) and magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) are considered substitutes for each other for evaluating Crohn’s disease (CD). However, the adequacy of mixing them for routine periodic follow-up for CD has not been established. This study aimed to compare MRE alone with the mixed use of CTE and MRE for the periodic follow-up of small bowel inflammation in patients with CD. @*Materials and Methods@#We retrospectively compared two non-randomized groups, each comprising 96 patients with CD. One group underwent CTE and MRE (MRE followed by CTE or vice versa) for the follow-up of CD (interval, 13–27 months [median, 22 months]), and the other group underwent MRE alone (interval, 15–26 months [median, 21 months]). However, these two groups were similar in clinical characteristics. Three independent readers from three different institutions determined whether inflammation had decreased, remained unchanged, or increased within the entire small bowel and the terminal ileum based on sequential enterography of the patients after appropriate blinding. We compared the two groups for inter-reader agreement and accuracy (terminal ileum only) using endoscopy as the reference standard for enterographic interpretation. @*Results@#The inter-reader agreement was greater in the MRE alone group for the entire small bowel (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]: 0.683 vs. 0.473; p = 0.005) and the terminal ileum (ICC: 0.656 vs. 0.490; p = 0.030). The interpretation accuracy was higher in the MRE alone group without statistical significance (70.9%–74.5% vs. 57.9%–64.9% in individual readers; adjusted odds ratio = 3.21; p = 0.077). @*Conclusion@#The mixed use of CTE and MRE was inferior to MRE alone in terms of inter-reader reliability and could probably be less accurate than MRE alone for routine monitoring of small bowel inflammation in patients with CD. Therefore, the consistent use of MRE is favored for this purpose.

Résumé

Opioids are effective analgesics for cancer pain and refractory non-cancer pain. Although they are essential medication, problematic issues on aberrant behavior and adverse events have rapidly emerged as social problems in Korea. This study aimed to describe the mechanisms, efficacy, and adverse events, especially how to deal with opioid dependency.Current Concepts: Opioid-induced aberrant behavior includes physical and psychological dependences (addiction), abuse, and diversion (giving prescribed opioids to another person). Most physicians are unfamiliar with how to handle patients presenting these problematic issues. Physical and psychological dependences develop through different pathophysiologic mechanisms, i.e., noradrenergic and dopaminergic pathways, respectively. Motivational enhancement therapy, psychosocial support, substitution therapy with buprenorphine, and adjunctive medications, including alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, antidepressants, and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, are the mainstay of treatment for opioid dependency. Constipation, nausea/vomiting, drowsiness/sedation, delirium, itching sensation, voiding difficulty, dry mouth, opioid-induced hyperalgesia, and respiratory depression are well-known physical side effects of opioid consumption.Discussion and Conclusion: Research on the development history, epidemiology of opioid dependency, and its treatment are warranted to avoid an opioid crisis in Korea. Above all, thorough knowledge for physicians and patients is urgently needed.

Résumé

Spinal epidural arteriovenous fistula (SEDAVF) is a rare vascular malformation. Due to the mass effect of enlarged epidural veins and venous hypertension, progressive radiculopathy and myelopathy are likely to occur. A 33-year-old female presented with right upper extremity weakness for a month. The cause of this symptom was a SEDAVF, which was located near the C5-6-7 foramens and compressed the nerve roots. In the absence of intradural venous drainage, endovascular treatment is often difficult because of the large venous pouch. We performed endovascular trapping of the vertebral artery (VA) and loose packing of the coil material on the AVF to minimize mass effects. Immediately after embolization, the fistula was occluded, but a small new feeder vessel developed a day later. An n-butyl cyanoacrylate embolization was performed, and the fistula was successfully occluded.

Résumé

Background@#Unnecessary and inappropriate laboratory testing accounts for a significant portion of waste in health care utilization. The aim of this study was to examine the diagnostic value of the anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) test by examining the rate of ANA associated rheumatic disease (AARD) diagnosis among ANA tested and ANA positive subjects and positive predictive value (PPV) of ANA test leading to AARD diagnosis in different ANA titers and different subsets of patients in 5 hospitals affiliated with a university. @*Methods@#We retrospectively extracted data from all subjects who were tested for ANA from year 2010 to 2019. Those who were first evaluated at or referred to rheumatology were further evaluated with extraction of data including ANA titer and ultimate diagnosis. PPVs for ANA test were evaluated after stratification according to clinically relevant key parameters, such as patient age (younger < 65 years vs. older), sex, and requesting department. @*Results@#From 2010 to 2019, A total of 94,153 patients were tested for ANA, of which 13,600 (14.4% of the total) were positive. AARD was diagnosed in only 0.69% among all ANA tested patients and 4.74% among ANA positive patients. The AARD diagnosis rate of ANA positive patients varied widely from 0.1% to 8.7% by requesting department. Using cutoff values above 1:320 yielded PPVs of 15.6 and 7.8% for all AARs and systemic lupus erythematosus. The PPV was significantly higher in young age (< 65 years) and in women, and when it was requested from internal medicine vs other departments. @*Conclusion@#AARD was diagnosed in less than 1% of all ANA tested patients in universityaffiliated hospitals. This result shows that careful consideration before ordering the screening ANA is needed to improve the utility of the test for providers and patients and to reduce health costs spurred by unnecessary testing and its consequences.

Résumé

Background@#The risk of opioid-related aberrant behavior (OAB) in Korean cancer patients has not been previously evaluated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT) in Korean cancer patients receiving opioid treatment. @*Methods@#Data were obtained from a multicenter, cross-sectional, nationwide observational study regarding breakthrough cancer pain. The study was conducted in 33 South Korean institutions from March 2016 to December 2017. Patients were eligible if they had cancer-related pain within the past 7 days, which was treated with strong opioids in the previous 7 days. @*Results@#We analyzed ORT results of 946 patients. Only one patient in each sex (0.2%) was classified as high risk for OAB. Moderate risk was observed in 18 males (3.3%) and in three females (0.7%). Scores above 0 were primarily derived from positive responses for personal or familial history of alcohol abuse (in men), or depression (in women). In patients with an ORT score of 1 or higher (n = 132, 14%), the score primarily represented positive responses for personal history of depression (in females), personal or family history of alcohol abuse (in males), or 16–45 years age range. These patients had more severe worst and average pain intensity (proportion of numeric rating scale ≥ 4: 20.5% vs. 11.4%, P < 0.001) and used rescue analgesics more frequently than patients with ORT scores of 0. The proportion of moderateor high-risk patients according to ORT was lower in patients receiving low doses of longacting opioids than in those receiving high doses (2.0% vs. 6.6%, P = 0.031). Moderate or high risk was more frequent when ORT was completed in an isolated room than in an open, busy place (2.7% vs. 0.6%, P = 0.089). @*Conclusions@#The score of ORT was very low in cancer patients receiving strong opioids for analgesia. Higher pain intensity may associate with positive response to one or more ORT item.

Objective@#The purpose of this study was to compare the physical work intensity of emergency medicine (EM) and non-EM residents during a 24-hour work duty cycle using a smartwatch. @*Methods@#This study was conducted for a month from 7 May to 4 June 2021. A total of 27 residents submitted their consent to be recruited as subjects for the study. We distributed a smartwatch to each of the participants and measured their physical work intensity. Twenty non-EM residents wore a smartwatch for a week. Also, seven EM residents wore a watch during the time they were on 24-hour duty for the whole research period. After finishing their 24-hour duty, participants took off the smartwatch and stopped recording their physical activities. Sixty-five samples were matched for comparison between the non-EM and EM residents. Each of the samples comprised a pair of 24-hour records of EM and non-EM residents. The data were matched to ensure the same date and grade and thus control the variables. @*Results@#The results of this study showed that the maximum heart rate of the EM residents was 129.7±3.8 beats/min, which was higher than that of the non-EM residents. A comparison of the sleep hours during the 24-hour duty showed that the average sleep time of the EM residents was 156.9±84.8 minutes, which was significantly lower than that of the non-EM residents. However, calorie consumption, moving distance, and step count during the 24-hour duty cycle showed no significant difference between the EM and non-EM residents. @*Conclusion@#The maximum heart rate was higher among EM residents during their 24-hour work duty compared to the non-EM residents. In addition, the sleep time of the EM residents was significantly lower than that of the non-EM residents.

Objective@#When rescuers move from ambulance to resuscitation area, they press the chest with one-hand by the stretchers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of one-hand chest compression on unfolded stretchers and analyze the characteristics of rescuers that affect compression. @*Methods@#A manikin simulation study was planned. A total of 28 participants performed one-hand chest compression for one minute to a manikin on the unfolded stretchers. The depth of compression, the extent of recoil and compression frequency were measured, and the results were analyzed. Correlation analysis was done between participant characteristics and depth and frequency of compression. Linear regression analysis was done for variables with significant correlation. @*Results@#Four participants were excluded due to wrist or shoulder pain. A total of 24 participants (13 male; 11 female) were enrolled. The mean depth of compression was 34.88±11.06 cm; the mean extent of recoil was 50.00±0 cm. The mean frequency of compression was 104.71±11.07 per minute. The extent of recoil and frequency of compression were satisfied with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) guidelines. The depth of compression was highly correlated with participants’ sex (r=-0.88), height (r=0.86), and weight (r=0.78). When adjusted for sex, the depth of compression increased as height and weight increased. @*Conclusion@#Mechanical chest compression device should be used when CPR is required while moving a cardiac arrest patient by the stretchers. If CPR needs to be done manually, moving distance should be minimized. Finally, a new type of stretcher that fits the body shape of Koreans should be developed.

Résumé

Purpose@#The accessibility of medical facilities for cancer patients affects both their comfort and survival. Patients in rural areas have a higher socioeconomic burden and are more vulnerable to emergency situations than urban dwellers. This study examined the feasibility and effectiveness of a cancer care model integrating a regional cancer center (RCC) and public health center (PHC). @*Methods@#This study analyzed the construction of a safety care network for cancer patients that integrated an RCC and PHC. Two public health institutions (an RCC in Gyeongnam and a PHC in Geochang County) collaborated on the development of the community care model. The study lasted 13 months beginning in February 2019 to February 2020. @*Results@#The RCC developed the protocol for evaluating and measuring 27 cancer-related symptoms, conducted education for PHC nurses, and administered case counseling. The staff at the PHC registered, evaluated, and routinely monitored patients through home visits. A smartphone application and regular video conferences were incorporated to facilitate mutual communication. In total, 177 patients (mean age: 70.9 years; men: 59%) were enrolled from February 2019 to February 2020. Patients’ greatest unmet need was the presence of a nearby cancer treatment hospital (83%). In total, 28 (33%) and 44 (52%) participants answered that the care model was very helpful or helpful, respectively. @*Conclusion@#We confirmed that a combined RCC-PHC program for cancer patients in rural areas is feasible and can bring satisfaction to patients as a safety care network. This program could mitigate health inequalities caused by accessibility issues.

Purpose@#This study was conducted to analyze the social factors influencing the ‘authenticity of suicidal ideation’ based post-suicidal care programs in emergency departments (EDs). @*Methods@#This retrospective study was an analysis using the data of patients who had attempted suicide and visited the ED in tertiary urban hospitals from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2018. The variables examined included gender, age, history of previous psychiatric disease, suicide method, and the number of previous attempts. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors influencing the registration rate for the community-based post-suicide care program. @*Results@#Overall,1,460 suicides were analyzed, 177 (1.16%) showed a high authenticity of suicide. The social factors influencing the authenticity of suicide intent were the unmarried status of men and women, joblessness, history of mental illnesses, more than two previous suicide attempts, the influence of alcohol, and an attempt to commit suicide after midnight more specifically between 24:00 to 6:00 hours in the morning (p<.05). The factors influencing the severity of the condition of high authenticity suicide patients were low Glasgow coma scores (12 points or less), lactate levels, and oxygen saturation observed in the patients who were admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment and died (p<.05). @*Conclusion@#The need for evidence-based preventive measures and early assessment tools at the emergency medicine level is emphasized to reduce the rate of suicide attempts. If the results of this study are used in the management of suicide prevention, the evaluation of the authenticity of suicide intent will be more likely to be made at the emergency medicine level, allowing the severity to be assessed earlier.

Objective@#Although several studies have been conducted on the use of ultrasound to assist in arterial punctures, its utility is controversial and it is also inconvenient to use the equipment in the emergency room. Therefore, we developed a radial artery puncture assistive device for use in the emergency room and evaluated its utility. @*Methods@#The operator attempted the procedure on a mannequin, both with and without the device. We recorded the first-attempt success rate, the number of punctures, the time to success, and the failure rate. We conducted a survey to assess pre-experiment expectation and post-experiment satisfaction. @*Results@#The first-attempt success rate was 78% with no device and 66% with the device (P=0.105). The failure rate was 5% both when the device was not worn and worn (P>0.99). The number of attempts was 2.18 with no device and 2.10 with the device (P=0.765). The time to success was 40.81 seconds without the device and 54.08 seconds with the device (P=0.307). The responses to the pre-experiment survey were 5% for ‘Not wearing the device seems to be more helpful’, 75% for ‘Wearing the device seems to be more helpful’, and 20% for ‘There seems to be no difference’. In the postexperiment survey, the responses were 30% for ‘Not wearing the device was more helpful’, 55% for ‘Wearing the device was more helpful’, and 15% for ‘There was no difference’. @*Conclusion@#There were no significant results from the experiments. But respondents felt that wearing the device was better in both the pre-experiment and post-experiment survey.

Résumé

Symptomatic cerebral vasospasm (CVS) and delayed ischemic neurologic deficit (DIND) after unruptured aneurysm surgery are extremely rare. Its onset timing is variable, and its mechanisms are unclear. We report two cases of CVS with DIND after unruptured aneurysm surgery and review the literature regarding potential mechanisms. The first case is a 51-year-old woman with non-hemorrhagic vasospasm after unruptured left anterior communicating artery aneurysm surgery. She presented with delayed vasospasm on postoperative day 14. The second case is a 45-year-old woman who suffered from oculomotor nerve palsy caused by an unruptured posterior communicatig artery (PCoA) aneurysm. DIND with non-hemorrhagic vasospasm developed on postoperative day 12. To our knowledge, this is the first report of symptomatic CVS with oculomotor nerve palsy following unruptured PCoA aneurysm surgery. CVS with DIND after unruptured aneurysm surgery is very rare and can be triggered by multiple mechanisms, such as hemorrhage, mechanical stress to the arterial wall, or the trigemino-cerebrovascular system. For unruptured aneurysm surgery, although it is rare, careful observation and treatments can be needed for postoperative CVS with DIND.

Background/Aims@#To explore the associations between body composition and pain, disease activity, and disability in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). @*Methods@#The study enrolled 335 patients with RA and underwent body composition measurement with an InBody analyzer. The associations of body mass index (BMI), body fat mass, and skeletal muscle mass with disease activity score in 28 joints (DAS28), an index derived to measure the subjective component of DAS28 (DAS28-P), a pain visual analogue scale (VAS), and disability measured with the health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) were explored. Obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 @*Results@#The median (interquartile range) disease duration was 6 years (3.5 to 9) and the mean DAS28 score was 3.6 ± 1.1. The mean BMI was 23.6 ± 3.6 kg/m2 and 109 patients (32.5%) were obese. Compared with non-obese patients, obese patients had a higher C-reactive protein (1.68 mg/dL vs. < 0.1 mg/dL, p = 0.013), higher pain VAS score (40 vs. 35, p = 0.031), and higher DAS28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate score (3.75 ± 1.18 vs. 3.46 ± 1.11, p = 0.031). In multivariate regression analysis, the DAS28 score in females was positively associated with the current steroid dose, body fat mass, and HAQ score, while the HAQ score in females was associated with older age, DAS28, lower skeletal muscle mass, and higher body fat/skeletal muscle ratio. In the multivariate regression analysis, the DAS28-P score in females was positively associated with body fat/skeletal muscle ratio and HAQ. @*Conclusions@#Body composition, such as the body fat mass and body fat/skeletal muscle ratio, is significantly associated with disease activity and disability in female RA patients.
