Résumé

Background@#Integrated management of general, mental, and oral health is necessary to improve an individual’s quality of life. This study aimed to identify the effects of mental and oral health behaviors on metabolic syndrome. @*Methods@#A total of 4,227 Korean adults aged 20 years or older were selected as study subjects using raw data from the first year (2019) of the 8th period of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). A complex sample chi-square test and a complex sample logistic regression analysis were performed using the PASW Statistics ver. 18.0 program. @*Results@#The effect on metabolic syndrome was significantly higher in male than in 1.833 times in male, 2.914 times in 30∼49 years old, and 3.855 times in 50∼64 years old, and 3.929 times in people over 65 years old compared to 20∼29 years old, and compared to those with a college degree or higher, those with a middle school degree or lower are 2.116 times, those with lower income levels are 1.507 times higher, those with middle-lower are 1.359 times higher, those with middle-high are 1.401 times. Compared to non-smokers, smokers were 1.570 times higher than non-smokers and compared to those without speech problem and chewing difficulty, they were 1.717 times and 1.397 times higher, respectively and 1.973 times higher in those with 0∼1 brushing times per day. Mental health did not affect prevalence of metabolic syndrome. @*Conclusion@#It is necessary to improve maintain a healthy lifestyle to lower the risk of metabolic syndrome. It is necessary to establish effective dental hygiene customized education and an efficient health management system at the national level that can induce improvement of oral health behavior for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome.

Résumé

Background@#This study aimed at investigating the meal regularity, health, and oral health habits of single Korean households to understand the impact of these factors on the risk of metabolic syndrome, in addition to preventing and managing metabolic syndrome. @*Methods@#Using raw data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019), 274 study subjects, aged 19 to 64, were selected primarily from single adult households. Complex sample statistical analysis was performed using the Predictive Analytics Software Statistics ver. 18.0 program. @*Results@#Regarding the meal regularity in single-person households in Korea, the younger group outperformed the middle-aged group, and those who drank more than once a month performed better than those who drank less than once a month. In terms of oral health, regardless of the age and the income level, participants who ate three meals a day had a higher rate of speech problems and chewing difficulties than those who ate irregularly or regularly on a regular day. Factors influencing the risk of developing metabolic syndrome were age, speech problems, and frequency of toothbrushing. Compared to the younger group, there were 0.361 times more people in the middle-aged group; and compared to those without speech problems, there were 1.161 more people with speech problem. Compared to those who tooth brushed more than four times a day, there were 1.284 more people who tooth brushed 2 to 3 times a day and there were 5.673 times more people who tooth brushed less than once. @*Conclusion@#Based on the study results, it is necessary to implement a program that can plan and apply customized management measures and prevent metabolic syndrome by improving and correcting the health and oral health behaviors of single-person households in Korea. Therefore, active mediation measures, such as support and publicity at the local or national level, should be planned.

Résumé

PURPOSE: Soft tissue or muscle adhesion to the Porous Polyethylene Sheet Implant (PPSI) can cause postoperative extraocular motility disturbance after orbital fracture repairs using PPSI. This study was designed to examine the efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation in the suppression of fibrosis between orbital connective tissue and PPSI. METHODS: Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were grouped as A, B, and C and conventional PPSI were implanted between orbital connective tissue and orbital floor in group A; PPSI with a barrier surface (PPSI-B) in group B; PPSI with amniotic membrane transplantation in group C. The implants were harvested at 8 weeks postoperatively, and stained with Masson trichrome and hemaoxylin and eosin staining techniques. RESULTS: In group A, the PPSI demonstrated dense adhesion on both the soft tissue implant and the bone implant interfaces. A lot of fibroblasts were observed on the surface of PPSI. In group B, the PPSI-B demonstrated less fibrosis over the barrier surface, and less fibroblasts than in group A. In group C, the PPSI with amniotic membrane transplantation manifested least fibrous adhesion among three groups. CONCLUSIONS: In orbital fracture repair, amniotic membrane transplantation could reduce the fibrosis between orbital connective tissue and PPSI, and might prevent the postoperative extraocualr motility disturbance.

Résumé

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the therapeutic effect of orbital reconstruction by transcaruncular approach on old medial orbital wall fracture. METHODS: We performed retrospective study on 23 eyes of 23 patients, who underwent orbital reconstruction with transcaruncular approach over six weeks after injury from July 1999 to August 2001. RESULTS: Nineteen cases had enophthalmos, preoperatively; five cases; 2 mm, seven cases; 3 mm, six cases; 4 mm, and one case; 5 mm, respectively. Postoperatively, we obtained enophthalmos less than 1 mm in 17 cases(89%). The exophthalmometry revealed that enophthalmos improved from 3.2+/-0.9 mm, preoperatively to 0.9+/-0.7 mm, postoperatively. Twelve cases had diplopia on the primary and downgaze, preoperatively. However, ten cases of them(83%) disappeared diplopia, postoperatively. Of the remaining two cases, one had persistent diplopia on the downgaze and the other had paralytic strabismus. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that the medial orbital wall repair through transcaruncular approach was a good way to correct enophthalmos and diplopia on old medial orbital wall fracture.

Résumé

Serum IgE values were determined in 100 patients vith atogic dermatitis in the Department of Dermatology at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, from Oct. 1, 1978 to Mar. 31, 1980. Mean IgE value of patients is 293. 4 unit/ml which is significantly higher than reference value, and the following results were obtained. 1. The mean IgE value in adults with atopic dermatitis, 339.8 unit/ml, 30 cases: more tian 16 years old) was significantly higher than in children(251. 4 unit /ml, 70 cases). 2. Male patierts showed higher IgE va,lue (mean 324. 5 unit/ml, 62 cases,' than female patients (242.7 unit/ml, 38 cases). 3. No close correlation was demonstrated between IgE values and eosiniphils in blood. 4. Patients with parasitic infesta, tion (5 cases) showed relatively increased IgE values (mean; 116. 2 unit/ml;. 5. Patients wifh bronchial asthma (2 cases) showed high IgE values exceeding 1000 unit/ml, 6. IgE. values roughly correlated with severity of the dermatitis. Four cases with high IgE values exceeding 1000 unit/ml were included in the clinically severe group.

Résumé

Rasch was the first to use the term carcinoma erysipelatoides in the dermatologic literature, and it is most frequently associated with breast carcinoma. This inflammatory type of rnetastatic carcinoma of the breast is an uncommon but well known entity. It occurrs almost exclusively in women, tends to appear in the anterior chest wall, and is usually found after recognition of the primary tumor which is usually adenocarcinoma or undifferentiated carcinoma. It has an acute inflammatory process with rapid progress, with many fatalities resulting in a short time. We report a case of carcinoma erysipela, toides originating from a breast carcinoma with characteristic clinical and histopathologic findings.

Résumé

The technique of plssma exchange has been applied to a number of immune disorders in which c4eulating antibodies are present. We observed a patient with bullous pemphigoid and serious side effects of longterm use of steroid therspy. We applied ten times of plasmapheresis to him over six months period. After the plasmapheresis, clinical symptoms have greatly improved and steroid maintenance doses have been decreased. We have not observed any side effect of plasmapheresis such as thrambotopenia or hypogarnrnaglobulinemia during the whole therapeutic period.
