Résumé

This study aimed to assess prevalence of mitral valve prolapse [MVP] in children with congenital heart disease. All children had been subjected to thorough clinical evaluation and Doppler echocardiography. Results showed that, MVP was detected in 3 out of 20 healthy children and was found in association with ASD in 6 out of 8, with aortic stenosis [AS] 4 out of 6 and with pulmonary stenosis [PS] 5 out of 12, none had MVP in VSD, PDA, tetralogy of Fallot or in complete atrio-ventricular canal defect. Mid-to-late systolic prolapse dominated holosystolic prolapse in all patients. In ASD and AS posterior leaflet prolapse was more prevalent than anterior while, both leaflets equally dominated in PS. MVP was found to be a common concomitant with congenital heart disease and must be added to the list of possible etiologies as congenital entity. Its prognostic impaction on the outcome of associated congenital heart disease still awaits follow up
