Résumé

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL) before and after orthodontic treatment (orthodontic-tx) using the modified Oral Impact on Daily Performance (OIDP) questionnaire. METHODS: Ninety-six subjects (32 males, 64 females; 48 ranging between 12–17 years, 48 ranging between 18–29 years) who completed orthodontic-tx in two dental clinics in Busan from May to December 2013 participated in this study. The participants self-reported their OHQoL on the Korean translated version of the OIDP before and during orthodontic-tx when the brackets were removed from their teeth. The OHQoL was again measured 1 month later. The visual analogue scale (VAS) from 0 (never) to 10 (definitely yes) was used to quantify the OHQoL. The physical, psychological, and social effects of the orthodontic-tx on daily performance were analyzed according to age and gender. RESULTS: The OHQoL score was lower during the orthodontic-tx (7.49±0.19) than before (5.51±0.18), but the final OHQoL score, after orthodontic-tx (9.39±0.07), was higher than the score before treatment. The trend was the same over all sub performances. Before orthodontic-tx, the OHQoL score related to psychological performance (6.98±0.22) was the lowest compared to physical and social performance. During orthodontic-tx, the scores related to physical performance, especially in the older (0.7 times) and female (0.62 times) groups, decreased the most compared to before treatment. Psychological performance, especially in the older (1.81 times) and female (1.66 times) groups, increased the most after orthodontic-tx. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed that orthodontic-tx affects the OHQoL according to age and gender. Specific approaches, classified by age and gender, are needed to improve the quality of life of orthodontic dental patients.

Résumé

Palmoplantar keratoderma is characterized clinically by excessive thickening of the skin and histologically by hyperkeratosis on the palms and soles. It can be classified based on inheritance patterns, causes, clinical presentation, and extent of involvement. Acquired palmoplantar keratoderma shows multifactorial etiology including exposure to certain chemicals or drugs, metabolic disorders, malnutrition, systemic disease, malignancy, dermatosis, and/or infection. We report a rare case of acquired palmoplantar keratoderma induced by malnutrition.

Résumé

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that influence married female immigrants' perceived health status. METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of dataset from the 2012 National Multicultural Family Survey in Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, an analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression with the data of 3,014 married female immigrants. RESULTS: Multiple regression analysis showed that demographic factors (age, education level, nationality, period of residency in Korea, and residential area), socio-economical factors (monthly family income, employment, support from the government for basic living, and Medicaid), social support factors (marital conflict, satisfaction with family relationships, some one to talk about self or family matters, meeting with homeland friend, and participation in community meeting), and immigration factors (life satisfaction, experience of social discrimination, and difficulties with living and using medical care) were associated with perceived health status. CONCLUSION: It is important to pay closer attention to immigrant women who have low economic status, less social support, experience difficulties with living in Korea and using medical care. An effective support system for this population should be developed in order to help them successfully transition.

Résumé

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-base cognitive therapy (MBCT) has been used to treat patients with depression to prevent relapse. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Mindfulness- Base Cognitive Therapy for patients who suffer with generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder for 1 year. METHODS: 19 patients with generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder were assigned to receive MBCT for a period of 8 weeks. The Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used at 0 weeks, 8 weeks and 1 year to assess the results. RESULTS: MBCT demonstrated significantly decreases on all the anxiety scale scores (HAM-A, p=0.00 ; BAI, p=0.00) and depressive scale scores (HAM-D, p=0.00 ; BDI, p=0.00). The patients who received 8-week of MBCT showed a higher remission rate (15/19, 78%) during the 1-year followup period. CONCLUSION: MBCT may be effective at relieving the anxiety and depressive symptoms of patients who suffer with generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder for 1 year. However, further well-designed controlled trials are needed to assess the value of MBCT.

Résumé

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Telemedicine has opened the door to a wide range of learning experience to the doctors and students working and studying at various remote locations. However, there are limitations to this technology, such as the lack of any approved international standards of ethics. The aim of our study was to establish a telemedical education system using the Digital Video Transfer System (DVTS) on the high-speed network. METHODS: The Asia Pacific Information Infrastructure (APII) link was used to connect Korea with Japan, and the Korea Advanced Research Network (KOREN) was used to connect Busan with Seoul. Teleconferencing and video streaming between Hanyang University Hospital in Seoul and Kyushu University Hospital in Japan were realized using DVTS over the Ipv4 network. RESULTS: Four endoscopic surgeries and two endoscopic procedures were successfully transmitted between Seoul and Kyushu, while concomitant teleconferences were taking place between the two cities throughout the operations. An adequate bandwidth of 60 Mbps was kept for two-line transmissions. The quality of transmitted video image showed no frame loss with a rate of 30 images per second. The sound was also clear, and the time delay was less than 0.3 sec. CONCLUSIONS: We have established an international medical network with high-quality video transmission over Internet medium and this was easy to perform, reliable and economical.
