Résumé

Background@#Elastic ear cartilage is a good source of tissue for support or augmentation in plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, the amount of ear cartilage is limited and excessive use of cartilage can cause deformation of the auricular framework. This animal study investigated the potential of periosteal chondrogenesis in an ear cartilage defect model. @*Methods@#Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were used in the present study. Four ear cartilage defects were created in both ears of each rabbit, between the central artery and marginal veins. The defects were covered with perichondrium (group 1), periosteum taken from the calvarium (group 2), or periosteum taken from the tibia (group 3). No coverage was performed in a control group (group 4). All animals were sacrificed 6 weeks later, and the ratio of neo-cartilage to defect size was measured. @*Results@#Significant chondrogenesis occurred only in group 1 (cartilage regeneration ratio: mean± standard deviation, 0.97± 0.60), whereas the cartilage regeneration ratio was substantially lower in group 2 (0.10± 0.11), group 3 (0.08± 0.09), and group 4 (0.08± 0.14) (p= 0.004). Instead of chondrogenesis, osteogenesis was observed in the periosteal graft groups. No statistically significant differences were found in the amount of osteogenesis or chondrogenesis between groups 2 and 3. Group 4 showed fibrous tissue accumulation in the defect area. @*Conclusion@#Periosteal grafts showed weak chondrogenic potential in an ear cartilage defect model of rabbits; instead, they exhibited osteogenesis, irrespective of their embryological origin.

Résumé

Tumors that develop from external auditory canal (EAC) are very rare. Adenoma that originates from apocrine is also a rare entity found in the EAC. Nevus sebaceous, syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP), tubular apocrine adenoma (TAA), and fibroadenoma are known to originate from apocrine. Among them, SCAP is believed to be a benign tumor that is manifested as papule and plague on the scalp and the face. However, TAA is a rare intradermal eccrine tumor and it mostly manifests as an isolated single nodule within the scalp area. Generally, these tumors are considered as two separate entities. Many articles have reported on the prevalence of TAA or SCAP with nevus sebaceous on the body, extremities, and scalp; but only 2 articles were reported on tumors that developed from EAC. In this article, we report on a patient who presented a mass in EAC, with both SCAP and TAA pathohistologic finding without nevus sebaceous.

Résumé

Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma is extremely invasive malignant tumor that has a histological characteristic of having both more than one epithelial and mesothelial tissue components. It is a rare cancer of having less than 50 cases reported until now and domestically. This case presents a 51 year-old male who had nasal stuffiness for 2 months. A mass was noticed in his right nasal cavity, and histopathologic findings revealed the mass as a teratocarcinosarcoma. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed that the mass originated from right nasal septum and did not invade the sinuses and that it was touching the inferior turbinate. No cervical lymph node metastasis was observed (T2N0M0, Stage II). Wide excision of the mass was performed, and no invasion in the resection margin was confirmed. Radiotherapy was performed postoperatively. Currently, the patient has been followed up on a regular basis for 28 months. Thus, the authors present a report of very rare sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma.

Résumé

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiographic and functional outcomes between who had unstable intertrochanteric fracture, treated with the ITST (lag screw design) and the PFNA (helical blade design). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected each 17 and 13 patients of unstable intertrochanteric fracture which were treated with ITST or PFNA from April 2005 to December 2008. We evaluated the radiographic results by follow-up radiography and the clinical outcomes with the mobility score of Parker and Palmer, Social function scoring system. RESULTS: The mean sliding distance of cervical screw with ITST nails was not shown significant differences than with using PFNA nails. The other factors were not statistically different. Decrease of mobility score of Parker and Palmer, Social function score were similar. 2 cases of cutting out was noted with ITST nails and 1 case of cutting out was noted with PFNA nails. CONCLUSION: Unlike the existed biomechanical reposts, there are no differences that are clinical and radiological results in treatment of unstable intertrochanteric fracture using the ITST nails and PFNA nails.

Résumé

OBJECTIVES: Present study was conducted to evaluate work-related symptom prevalence among hairdressers. METHODS: Exposed group comprised 184 employee employed 73 hair salons in 6 districts of Pusan city, and non-exposed grouts comprised 119 people living recent apartments. A trained interviewer interviewed them with organized questionnaire which included dermatologic, respiratory and musculo-skeletal symptoms. RESULTS: Prevalence of hand eczema wart 28.3 % in exposed group, and 5.9 % in non-exposed group. Adjusted odds ratio for age and atopy history was 4.30(2.34-7.93). Prevalence of respiratory symptom(coughing) in exported group was 22.1%, and 9.4% for non-exposed group. Adjusted odds ratio for coughing which was adjusted for age, smoking and atopy history was 2.76(1.32-5.78). Prevalences of musculo-skeletal symptoms among exposed group were neck(59.9%) shoulder(76.6%), upper back(41.2%), lower back (72.2%), arm and elbow(31.3%), wrist(44.2%), finger(35.0%), leg(71.1%). Adjusted Odds Ratios for musculo-skeletal symptoms which wag adjusted for age were neck 2.13(1.29-3.51), shoulder 2.52 (1.50-4.24), upper back 1.71(1.01~2.88), lower back 1.78(1.06~2.99), arm and elbow 3.10(1.62~5.94), wrists 2.09(1.23~3.57), finger 4.83(2.41~ 9.68), leg 3.46(2.07~5.79). CONCLUSIONS: These results chow that employees in hair salon are likely to have high risk for work-related dermatologic, respiratory and musculo-skeletal symptoms and diseases. Hence, prevention methods from those work-related diseases are required to be developed. Also, the scope of occupational and environmental medicine should be expanded to service area including hairdressers.
