Cryptorchidism in adolescents and adults: orchiopexy or orchiectomy?

In the period between 1986-88, 66 patients, with an age range of 12-38 years, were treated for cryptorchidism. A total of 69 testes, comprised the sample of this study. Orchiopexy was performed on 26 testes. Orchiopexy and biopsy on 17 testes and orchidectomy on 26 testes. The biopsied and removed testes showed histological features of advanced testicular atrophy. We conclude the undescended testes in adolescents and adults become atrophic and should be treated by orchidectomy in unilateral disease
