Résumé

Background: Diabetes induces systemic disorders through changes in plasma lipid levels and increasing risk of cardiovascular diseases. In this study, the effects of aqueous extract of Zingiber officinale on the serum levels of lipids was investigated in rats following the induction of diabetes by streptozotocin

Materials and methods: In this experimental study, 42 male Wistar rats were divided in 6 groups of seven as follow: the control, diabetic sham and 4 experimental groups. Diabetic sham received 70 mg/kg streptozotocin once at the beginning of the experiment; the experimental groups 1 and 2 daily received 250 and 500 mg/kg Zingiber aqueous extract respectively; the experimental groups 3 and 4 first received streptozotocin once, and then a daily dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg extract. Oral administration of aqueous extract continued over a period of two months. Then, blood samples were prepared, and used for measurement of serum levels of triglycerides [TG], total cholesterol [TC], LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol

Results: Serum concentration of triglyceride and LDL cholesterol in the diabetic sham compared to the control group showed a significant increase [p<0.05]. Conversely, serum levels of triglyceride and LDL cholesterol in the experimental group 1 compared to the control group indicated a significant decrease. Triglyceride in the experimental group 2 revealed a significant increase compared to the control group. Also, HDL cholesterol increased significantly in this group. A significant decrease was observed in the serum levels of triglyceride and LDL cholesterol in the experimental group3 and 4 compared with diabetic sham, whereas concentration of HDL cholesterol in experimental Group 4 increased significantly [p< 0.05]

Conclusion: Due to its antioxidant properties, aqueous extract of Zingiber can reduce streptozotocin toxicity leading to an improvement in serum lipid profiles of diabetic patients

Résumé

In the present study, the oral effect of lead acetate on the parameters related to sexual behavior as well as changes in the level of testosterone hormone in adult male rats have been investigated. Forty adult male Wistar rats were allocated into five equal groups. The control group received nothing, the sham group received distilled water and the experimental groups received 25, 50 and 100mg/kg lead acetate orally, respectively for 28 days. The changes in testosterone hormone level and following sexual behavior parameters were investigated: mount latency [ML], intromission latency [IL], post ejaculatory interval [PEI], mount frequency [MF], ejaculatory latency [EL], intromission frequency [IF], copulatory efficacy [CE] and intercopulatory interval [ICI]. The levels of testerone hormone in the groups that received 50 and 100 mg/kg lead acetate showed significant decreases in compared to the control group. Additionally, the same doses of lead acetate caused significant increases in ML, IL, PEI, and EL compared to the control group. No significant change was observed in MF, but a significant decrease was detected in IF and CE in the experimental group that received 100 mg/kg lead acetate when compared with the control group. ICI showed significant decreases in the experimental groups that received 50 and 100 mg/kg lead acetate compared to the control group. It can be concluded that ingestion of lead acetate affects some behavioral activities and the testosterone level of male rats. These effects might be conducted via the alteration of leydig cells following lead acetate poisoning

Résumé

Cabergoline is a strong dopaminergic agonist that is derived from Ergot fungus. Although, this drug can be so important in treating many disorders such as hyperprolactinemia, but its side effects are considerable on the endocrinal axis. The purpose of this study was to determine effects of cabergoline on serum levels of TSH, T[4] and T[3] hormones in adult male rats. In this experimental study, 40 adult male wistar rats were used in five groups of eight. The drug was subcutaneously injected for a period of 14 days. The experimental groups received 0.1, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg, respectively. The control group received no drug. The sham group received only distilled water. At the end of 14[th] day, blood samples were taken and the concentration of TSH, T[4] and T[3] were measured by RIA. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and TUKEY test between the control and experimental group. Serum levels of TSH and T4 hormones in the experimental groups with doses of 0.1, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg showed statistically significant decrease compared with control group [p<0.05]. Concentration of T[3] hormone showed significant increase in the experimental group with 0.1 mg/kg in comparison with control group [p<0.05]. Cabergoline probably decreases the release of TSH and T[4] by stimulating the D[2]-dopaminergic receptor existing in thyrotrophic cells. According to the increase of T[3] concentration with low dose of drug, cabergoline may have different physiological effects in different amounts, and alter the function of pituitary -thyroid axis
