Résumé

Cytologic evaluation in the form of multiple follow-up studies was carried out in [210] women using Copper IUCD for a period ranging from 18-72 months. Age of those women ranged from 21-42 years. Pre-insertion smears were available for nearly half of them. The main encountered cytologic abnormalities included squamous metaplasia [70.5%] endocervial cell proliferation and repair [59%], abnormal endometrial cell shedding [24%] and dysplais: [9.5%]. While the former two lesions showed a significant association with loop insertion, the rate of dysplasia did not reveal any significant change during the six-month period of follow up. The results of the present work, therefore, support the observation noted by other major studies that there is no significant enhancement of cervical cytologic neoplasia from up to six years of using IUCD

Résumé

This prospective study was conducted to illustrate the biologic behavior of mild dysplasia during long-term follow-up of cervical smears in 252 patients harbouring such lesions. Out of those, 60% regressed, 27% persisted and 13% progressed; of which 3% showed severe dysplastic changes mounting to carcinoma in situ. The rate of progression was more pronounced as time elapsed. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of Papanicolaou smears in early detection of such lesions. A prompt diagnosis, appropriate therapy and careful follow-up are mandatory to prevent their probable progression to invasive carcinoma

Résumé

The cytological and histopathological findings of [107] patients, referred to the teaching laboratories of Saddam Medical City Hosp., during a two years period [1990-1991], were reviewed. Changes of cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia were diagnosed in 40 patients [37%] cytologically. The sensitivity of cytological diagnosis of CIN changes was [86%], while the specificity was [97%]. The comparable figures for cytodiagnosis of cervical carcinoma were [91%] and [100%], respectively

Résumé

This study was conducted to observe the prevalence of CIN among 1415 patients. Cervico-Vaginal smears were taken, stained by Pap stain and examined cytologically. CIN was diagnosed in 9.3%, the majority of which were CIN I [82.5% of total CIN], which had a close relationship with chronic cervicitis. Chi-square statistics showed that squamous metaplasia and Trichomonas vaginalis were significantly more common in patients with CIN. The overall findings emphasize the importance of Pap smears in early detection of such lesions. Appropriate therapy and careful follow-up are mandatory to control their probable progression to severe dysplasia or to invasive carcinoma
