Résumé

Seven patients with adeno-carcinoma of the small intestine were seen over a period of five years. Four were localized to the duodenum, the jejunum was involved in two and the ileum in one. Abdominal pain, weight loss, anemia and obstruction were the most common presenting complaints. Endoscopy was the primary diagnostic modality for the duodenal tumours. Diagnostic accuracy of barium contrast examination was 83%. Curative resections were performed in two patients and palliative surgery in the rest.

Résumé

Two cases of hepatocellular carcinoma presenting with features of obstructive jaundice are reported because of their unusual presentation. Both of them had obstruction of the common bile duct by tumor emboli and underwent palliation with surgical evacuation of the tumor thrombus.

Résumé

When stool samples from 970 subjects belonging to lower socio-economic groups were examined for parasites, a total of 121 subjects (12.5%) i.e., 57 (12.1%) males and 64 (12.9%) females showed positive results. The overall prevalence of parasitic infestation did not correlate with sex, caste or religion and living conditions. However, the prevalence was higher in hospital employees residing in well sanitated area. Giardia lamblia (69.5%), Entamoeba, histolytica (15.7%), Hymenolepis nana (12.4%), Ancylostoma duodenale (10.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (8.3%) and Taenia (0.8%) were the parasites seen. Mixed infections were seen in 9 subjects. Twenty families of the 196 studied had more than one family member positive for parasites. Asymptomatic positivity was high amongst all groups of subjects, and with all parasites.

Résumé

During the last two years, 116 endoscopic sphincterotomies (ES) were attempted in 110 patients. The indication for ES was choledocholithiasis in 102 (93%) patients, including 37 (36.2%) with gallbladder in situ and 65 (64%) post-cholecystectomy patients; the other 8 (7%) were performed for stricture of the lower end of the common bile duct (CBD) with cholangitis (2), insertion of nasobiliary drain (2), restenosis after previous sphincterotomy (1), stone in the cystic duct stump causing cholangitis (1), papillary stenosis (1) and post-cholecystectomy cholangitis with no obvious cause (1). ES was achieved in 113 (97.4%) attempts in 107 (97%) patients and was overall successful in 81% of patients. Of the 95 patients with choledocholithiasis in whom ES could be performed and a follow-up was available, 79 (83%) cleared their CBD. Of 98 patients with choledocholithiasis, 79 (80.6%) finally cleared their CBD of stones. Three patients developed complications, one needing emergency operation. There were no deaths. ES was found to be effective in patients with retained stones and also in patients with choledocholithiasis with gallbladder in situ, especially those who were poor surgical risk.

Résumé

A DNA hybridization assay was developed using a cloned hepatitis Β viral genome to detect the presence of infectious virions in human serum. The merit of this assay was to put in evidence virus particles in 7 out of 133 sera that were negative for surface antigen (HBsAg) using routine serological methods. The usefulness of this assay was confirmed by actual visualization of the virus under electron microscope. Some serum samples although positive for surface antigen, did not give a hybridization signal by dot blot assay and might indicate cases of acute hepatitis.

Résumé

Therapeutic ultrasound at 875 kHz at 10 and 15 W/cm2 intensity induced extensive damages in the liver of mouse. Total exposure of 5 min was spread over 5 days. Aqueous medium was avoided by coupling the transducer directly to the skin surface. Mild to extensive damages were noted. Complete distortion of hepatocellular architecture was noted in 15 W irradiated mice. However, there was almost complete recovery by 10th day following the last exposure.
