Résumé

Blood samples were taken from 63 patients with suspected acute appendicitis preoperatively, and who were subjected to surgery, in order to estimate the C-reactive protein level and the total and differential leukocytic counts. The results were tabulated and correlated together with the pathology of the removed appendices then statistically analysed. It was concluded that the total and differential leukocytic counts could not be of significant help in the management of individual cases of acute appendicitis, as their level varies among different individuals and in the same individual. As for C-reactive protein, it showed that it can be useful in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis, and accordingly its usefulness can be extended to distinguish surgical intra-abdominal pathology from other causes of abdominal pain
