Résumé

Aim: To understand the experiences of people who have attempted to stop smoking by participating in an anti-smoking program. Methods: A descriptive study with a qualitative approach conducted with members of an anti-tobacco program. This comprised of a semi-structured interview, and was subjected to content analysis. Results: Of the 13 subjects, four had quit smoking and nine had not. From experiences reported, three primary feelings emerged: realizing the necessity of quitting smoking; unveiling the mysteries of the process of smoking cessation; and the psychosocial implications of those who overcame their addiction. Discussion: The difficulties found by those abstaining from tobacco feature a paradox between the need to stop smoking, and the compulsive desire to continue smoking. Conclusion: The description of experiences reveals the complexity involved in quitting smoking and the importance of anti-tobacco programs, favoring the planning and implementation of these programs to increase tobacco cessation.
