Résumé

Mosquitoes secrete saliva that contains biological substances, including anticoagulants that counteract a host's hemostatic response and prevent blood clotting during blood feeding. This study aimed to detect heparin, an anticoagulant in Aedes togoi using an immunohistochemical detection method, in the salivary canal, salivary gland, and midgut of male and female mosquitoes. Comparisons showed that female mosquitoes contained higher concentrations of heparin than male mosquitoes. On average, the level of heparin was higher in blood-fed female mosquitoes than in non-blood-fed female mosquitoes. Heparin concentrations were higher in the midgut than in the salivary gland. This indicates presence of heparin in tissues of A. togoi.

Résumé

A survey of mosquitoes, including the vector status of Brugia malayi filariasis and their relative larval density, was conducted from 2002 to 2005 at several southern remote islands of Jeollanam-do (province), Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju-do, Korea, where filariasis was previously endemic. Overall, a total of 9 species belonging to 7 genera were collected. Ochlerotatus togoi (formerly known as Aedes togoi), Anopheles (Hyrcanus) group, and Culex pipiens were the predominant species captured at all areas. Oc. togoi larvae were most frequently collected at salinity levels <0.5% during June and July, with densities decreasing sharply during the rainy season in August. The most likely explanation for the eradication of filariasis in these areas is suggested to be an aggressive treatment program executed during the 1970s and the 1990s. However, high prevalence of the vector mosquitoes may constitute a potential risk for reemerging of brugian filariasis in these areas.

Résumé

This report deals with the comparative study on the vitellogenesis in autogenous and anautogenous strains of Aedes togoi. Histochemical and immunohistochemical methods were used. It was found that rule of vitellogenesis is characteristic in different strains within the same species. Synthesis of vitellogenin in autogenous strain begins as soon as post-emergence and the process goes on continuously, up to the oocytes to take in vitellin for maturation. Vitellogenin synthesis in anautogenous strain starts after blood meal, and there is an apparent testing stage before blood feeding. The capacity of vitellogenin synthesis is also different between two strains.

Résumé

The ovary development in autogenous and anautogenous strains of Aedes togoi was stud led.Under the laboratory conditions, autogenous and anautogenous strains were selected from the wild caught Aedes togoi, and different stages of ovary development were observed. The experiment demonstrated that the biological characteristics of the ovary development in these two strains were evidently different, such as the size and number of matured follicles, the continuity and the pace of developing pro:esses. The main cause for the differences is the time and amount of vitellogenin deposited in oocytes.
