Résumé

Ayurveda emphasize prevention over cure. A balanced diet with proper dietetic rule can help avoid a lot of common health concerns. The source of life for all living beings is food, growth, strength, intelligence, satisfaction, all are established in food. Food is significant as a nutritional source, as well as having therapeutic value, and it plays an important part in regaining strength lost due to the disease's detrimental effects throughout the post-treatment phase and also excess exercise, or addiction too. Ayurveda classic haphazardly explain nutritional issues. Each and every disease is due to faulty Ahara and Vihara. Ahara vidhi is equally important to get optimum benefits from consumed food. Childhood malnutrition is thought to be the cause of 35% of all fatalities in children under the age of five, as well as 21% of total worldwide disability-adjusted life years lost in children. Karshya not only concerns with weight loss, but also compares with malnutrition-like disorders. In Ayurveda, Karshya is a disease as well as cause, prodromal symptoms, feature of different diseases and bad prognostic sign. Karsha is also a physiological in Vataja prakriti individual. This illness is linked to growth and development issues in children and adolescence group. In adults, malnutrition results in weakness, fatigue, low immune response, protein, vitamin, minerals, fats deficiencies, and more prone to degenerative diseases. The aim of this review article is highlighted the Ayurvedic perspective on Karsha in term of malnutrition. All material for this article is collected from classical Ayurvedic texts. Understanding the cause and pathophysiology and accurate treatment as per Ayurved classics all are discussed here elaborately

In order to achieve the healthy life, it is important to follow the first principal of Ayurveda which is Ahara (diet). The importance of Ahara in life is described by Acharaya charak in classical texts, where every aspect of Ahara including its regular intake, different categories has been elaborated aptly. In Charak samhita, Acharya has classified the Ahara in 12 different categories. Among these, Shookdhanya (cereals) is first one. Shashtika (rice) Vrihi (rice), Yava (barley), Godhum (wheat) are categorized under Shookdhanya (cereals). The food of these groups has similar pharmacological properties with Madhur rasa (sweet in taste), Madhur vipak (sweet after digestion) and Vata kaphahar action. According to modern science Shook dhanya dravya are included in monocotyledon and energy giving food. Energy giving food mainly includes cereal groups like wheat, rice, maize (corn), oats, Jowar, Ragi, and Bajra. Here an attempt has been made to study the fundamental characteristics and health benefits of the class of cereals (Shookadhanya group of Ahara).

Nutritious diet (Ahara) or we can say balanced diet is the key to follow the first principle of Ayurveda or in order to maintain a healthy life. In Ayurveda Acharya Charak has mentioned regular intake of food articles belongs to different categories of food. Acharya Charak has classified Ahara (diet) in twelve categories. Among these, Shukadhanya is the first one. In modern literature, Shukadhanya has been classified in monocotyledons and energy giving food. Energy giving food mainly includes cereal groups like wheat, rice, maize (corn), oats, Jowar, Ragi, and Bajra. Ancient Acharyas has mentioned some Shukadhanya dravyas with their gunas (qualities) like Shashthika, Vrihi (variety of rice), Yava, wheat, which play an important role in prevention of diseases. These Dravyas are Sheeta (cold in potency), Swadu (sweet in taste), Swadu Vipaka (Sweet in digestion). They are said to be Vatavardhak, Alpavarchasa, Brinhana, Shukrala and Mutral. In modern literature, Shukadhanya Varga has been classified in cereal group. Cereals are enriched with niacin, iron, riboflavin, and thiamine, and most cereals have abundant fibre content, especially barley, oat, and wheat. Cereals also have soluble bran that aids in lowering blood cholesterol level and helps in preventing heart diseases. This article is an attempt to analyze the Shukadhanya Varga mentioned in Ayurveda on a scientific basis.

Résumé

Pandu means pallor. In this disease there is predominance of paleness all over the body. due to its similarity it can be co-related with modern disease anaemia. Pandu Roga is explained by almost all of our Acharyas. This article is based on Nidanapanchaka of Pandu Roga from Ayurvedic texts as Charak samhita, Susruta samhita, Astanga hrudaya etc with all commentaries. Rasavaha and Raktavaha srotas are chiefly involved in pathogenesis of Pandu Roga. The changing lifestyle of human being by means of Ahara and Vihar plays a major role in manifestation of various diseases. Pandu Roga is also one of them. Our faulty dietary habits and lifestyle produces Ama which further causes Agnimandya and ultimately Amayukta Ahararasa produced. It hampers Rasa Dhatu utpatti and manifests Pandu Roga. Aggravated Pitta is responsible for the production of Posaka (nutrient portion) from the Rasadhatu as a result depletion of Rakta takes place. The detail knowledge of Nidanapanchaka and types of Pandu Roga will help in its diagnosis and management in this modern era also.

Ayurveda considers Ahara (food) as one of the three supporting pillars. Food has been given prime importance since Vedic Period. It is considered as Brahma in Upanishad. Acharaya Kashyapa gives it the name “Mahabhaisajya”. This is responsible for the growth, development and enhancement of Ojas. The body as well as diseases; both psychological and lifestyle disorders like Heart disease, Obesity, Diabetes, Hypertension and Cancer being the major health problems are formed by food, wholesome and unwholesome food are responsible for happiness and misery respectively. The disease can be cured without any medication by just following wholesome regimen, whereas even hundreds of medicines cannot be cure a disease in absence of wholesome regimen. Ahara rasa which is formed from ingested diet nourished not only our body but also nourished mind and sensory organs. Ayurveda describes that Deha is made up of Ahara and the Vyadhi also. According to Laulimbaraja “Pathya is the secret of healthiness likewise Apathya is the root cause of all diseases”. Ayurvedic Acharayas describes importance of Ahara differently especially in Brihatrayee, a special chapter has been described for Annapana Vidhi. The principle of dietetics and nutrition in Ayurvedic system of medicine include different classes of Ahara i.e. eating and drinking items, principle of Pathyapathya (wholesome and unwholesome diet), discipline of eating (Ashta Ahara Vidhi Visheshayatan, Dvadasha Asana Vidhi etc.), Viruddha Ahara (incompatible diet). Ashta Ahara Vidhi Visheshayatan includes eight discipline of eating and Dvadasha Asana Vidhi includes the twelve discipline of eating as described by Acharya Charaka and Sushruta respectively and is very important in daily life for promotion of positive health.

Ayurveda defines normal health as a balanced state of Doshas, Dhatus, Agni, mala and happiness of Atma, Indriyas and Manas as well as the physical mental and social wellbeing. According to WHO’s definition of health “a state of physical mental and social wellbeing and not merely an absence of diseaseâ€. proper nutrition is very essential for healthy life. Ahara (food) is the main source of nutrition. Ahara (Food) sustains the life of living beings. All living beings in the universe require Ahara (food), complexion, clarity, good voice, longevity, geniusness, happiness, satisfaction, nourishment, strength and intellect are all conditioned by Ahara (food). Professional activities leading to happiness in this world, Vedic rituals leading to abode in heaven and observance of truth, Brahmhacharya leading to salvation are all based on food. Only the individual having a healthy body can afford to perform all activities leading to happiness, heaven and salvation, and for the preservation of health intake of food is essential. Hence food is the basic factor for the attainment of all of them. Ahara Vidhi Vishesha Ayatan (Eight types of special directions for ingestion of food). According to Acharya Charaka only the normal quantity of Ahara cannot provide the good result of Ahara because the result of Ahara depends upon Ahara, Vidhi, Vishesh, Ayatan Eight types of special direction have been given by Acharya Charaka for ingestion of food.
