Résumé

Objective:To investigate the differences in refractive astigmatism, the anterior corneal surface astigmatism and ocular residual astigmatism between dominant and non-dominant eyes in myopia. Methods:A corss-sectional study was conducted. Two hundred and seventy-six eyes from 138 patients with myopia who were to receive corneal refractive surgery in the Refractive Surgery Center of Tianjin Eye Hospital from January to March 2018 were included.Ocular dominance was assessed with the hole-in-the-card test. The manifest refraction and corneal topography were performed in order to measure the sphericity, spherical equivalent, the astigmatism of anterior corneal surface and total cornea.Vector analysis was used to calculate the value of the ocular residual astigmatism and the components of astigmatism, including J0 and J45 of both the refractive astigmatism and the astigmatism of anterior corneal surface. This study adhered to the Declaration of Helsinki. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Tianjin Eye Hospital (No.201909).Results:It was found that 61.6%(85/138) of the subjects was right-eye dominant. There was no significant difference in sphericity and spherical equivalent, J0 and J45 of the refractive astigmatism and the astigmatism of anterior corneal surface between dominant and non-dominant eyes (all at P>0.05). The magnitude of the ocular residual astigmatism of the dominant eye was 0.607(0.451, 0.808)D, which was lower than 0.701(0.497, 0.901)D of the non-dominant eye, showing a statistically significant difference ( Z=-2.52, P=0.01). Conclusions:In the myopic population with no significant difference in the sphericity and spherical equivalent between the dominant and non-dominant eyes, the magnitude of the ocular residual astigmatism of the dominant eye is significantly lower than that of the non-dominant eye, which may play an important role in the ocular dominance formation.

Résumé

Abstract Objective: To compare macular and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thicknesses of dominant eye and non-dominant eye using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods: 104 eyes of 52 healthy young adults were included. Ophthalmological examinations; including measuring refraction, best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, slit-lamb biomicroscopy, dilated fundus examination, measuring of central macular thickness (CMT), and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (PRNFL) thickness were performed on each subject. Hole-in-the-card test was used to detect the ocular dominance. Results: There were 25 females (48%) and 27 males (52%) in the study. Eight participants had left eye dominance (15%), forty-four participants had right eye dominance (85%). Mean CMT was 192.5µm in dominant group and 191.9 µm in non-dominant group. There was no statistically significant difference between dominant eye group and non-dominant eye group in either macular thickness or peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. Conclusions: No difference between macular and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thicknesses were detected in dominant and non-dominant groups. Further evaluation is needed.

Resultados: houve 25 mulheres (48%) e 27 homens (52%) no estudo. Oito participantes tinham deixado a dominância do olho (15%), quarenta e quatro participantes tinham dominância do olho direito (85%).

Purpose: To assess and compare the effects of contact lens-based artificial pupil design and contralateral balanced multifocal contact lens combination (CBMCLC) on visual performance. Methods: This randomized crossover study conducted at the University of Valencia, Spain included 38 presbyopic patients using an artificial pupil contact lens in the nondominant eye and a CBMCLC. After a month of lens wear, the binocular distance visual acuity (BDVA), binocular near visual acuity (BNVA), defocus curve, binocular distance, and near contrast sensitivity and near stereoacuity (NSA) were measured under photopic conditions (85 cd/m2). Moreover, BDVA and binocular distance contrast sensitivity were examined under mesopic conditions (5 cd/m2). Results: Visual acuity at an intermediate distance and near vision was better with the CBMCLC than with the artificial pupil (p<0.05). Statistically significant differences were found in contrast sensitivity between the two types of correction for distance (under mesopic conditions) and for near vision, with the CBMCLC exhibiting better results in both cases (p<0.05). The mean NSA values obtained for the artificial pupil contact lens were significantly worse than those for the CBMCLC (p=0.001). Conclusion: The CBMCLC provided greater visual performance in terms of intermediate and near vision compared with the artificial pupil contact lens. .
