In a context where different protocols for recommended practices in clinical voice assessment exist, while there are gaps in the literature regarding the evidence base supporting assessment procedures and measures, clinicians from regions where a strong community holding expertise in clinical and scientific voice practices lack can struggle to confidently develop their voice assessment practices. In an effort to improve voice assessment practices and strengthen professional identity among speech-language pathologists in Quebec, Canada, a community of practice (CoP) was established, with the aim of promoting knowledge sharing, implementing change in clinical practice, and improving professional identity. Thirty-nine participants took part in the CoP activities conducted over a four-month period, including virtual meetings and in-person workshops. Participants had a high rate of attendance (> 74% participation rate in virtual meetings), and were highly satisfied with their participation and intended to remain involved after the project's end. Statistically significant changes in voice assessment practices were observed post-CoP, regarding probability of performing assessments (p < .001), and perceived importance of assessment for evaluative purposes (p <.001), as well as improvements in assessment specific confidence, specifically for procedure of auditory-perceptual assessment (p < .001) and purpose of aerodynamic assessment (p = .05). Moreover, there was an increase in professional identity post-CoP (p < .001) and participants felt they made significant learnings. The present study highlighted the need to involve SLPs in future research to identify assessments that are relevant to the specific evaluative objectives of SLPs working with voice, and suggests CoPs are an efficient tool for that purpose.

ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize the knowledge, skills, opinions, and main barriers perceived by speech-language pathologists, in child language in Brazil, regarding evidence-based practice (EBP). Methods The study was conducted between August 2021 and July 2022 using an online questionnaire. In addition to sociodemographic and field data, 22 items related to EBP were considered and subdivided into "knowledge", "skills", "opinion" and "barriers". Each item had five response options (strongly disagree, disagree, not decided, agree, strongly agree). A total of 122 speech-language pathologists who work with child language answered the questionnaire. Their responses were described by the percentage of frequency distribution. The time since graduation and the level of proficiency in English were considered to compare the distribution pattern of the answers. Results Although most speech-language pathologists report having learned the basics of EBP in their academic training, there are weaknesses in their knowledge and lack of mastery of search strategies and critical evaluation of scientific articles. Although most agree that EBP's use is necessary for speech-language practice and consider the need to increase the use of scientific evidence in their daily practice, the lack of articles, difficulties related to the practical application of scientific results and lack of collective support among colleagues are identified as barriers. Conclusion This study alerts the academic community to the urgency of considering EBP in the context of Brazilian Speech-Language Pathology.

Resumos In this paper we problematize the question of whether psychoanalysis has evidence of effectiveness. This study is important because in several countries that are a reference in the field of health, a practice must have evidence of effectiveness in order to be accepted; and although many studies have shown the effectiveness of psychoanalysis, several countries still do not consider it an evidence-based treatment. We identified, inside and outside the psychoanalytic field, some reasons why psychoanalysis is not considered an evidence-based treatment. In this article, we do not only problematize the question, but also reveal a number of studies that prove the effectiveness of psychoanalytic treatment for a series of mental disorders.

Introduction: Colombia is one of the countries with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Latin America and the Caribbean. In a health crisis of high intensity, governments cannot work alone, so alliances and collaboration between Government and academia take on a preponderant value. Objective: Systematize the experience of the collaborative work carried out between academic actors in the region and the health authorities from the Department of Santander, Colombia in the framework of the health emergency due to COVID-19 during 2020-2021. Methods: Based on the systematization of experiences and from the critical social approach, a qualitative approach was carried out with eight key actors from the academic sector and the health authority that actively participated in the alliance. Documentary review and semi-structured interviews were conducted. Results: Once the health emergency was declared, two collaborative working groups were quickly formed, one between academia and government actors of the municipality of Bucaramanga and another between academia and departmental government actors; both groups were formed voluntarily but differed in their form of organization. The collaborative and voluntary work provided support to health authorities mainly in the preparation phase to face the pandemic, knowledge translation and dissemination, epidemiological surveillance, and response capacity-building activities. Conclusions: The support provided by the collaborative team was very proliferative in activities and interventions; however, difficulties occurred and one of them was that a significant number of their recommendations were not addressed by the health authorities. The difficulties presented are not different from those already reported in other public health emergencies, so it is necessary to continue strengthening the relations between Government-Academia, so that they can proactively draw up an agenda that contributes to overcoming the limitations that are reported in this work.

RÉSUMÉ

Background: Evidence-based practice across United Arab Emirates has been widely adopted as country strategic direction but the knowledge, attitudes, and its implementation among nurses are yet to be explored. This study explored the knowledge, attitude and implementation of EBP among nurses working in the UAE. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from 1,602 nurses working in different healthcare settings across the UAE. Two tools were used in the survey for data collection: the self-reported EBP Questionnaire created by Upton and the EBP Implementation scale by Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, and Mays. Results: A total of 1602 nurses (response rate: 95.9%) completed the questionnaire. The mean age was 38.7 years (age range=20-60 years). The study found that the majority of participants were female (84.1%), with 39.6% being staff nurses and the largest group (28.2%) having 11-15 years of nursing experience. Attitudes towards EBP showed the highest mean score of 4.93±1.7 followed by knowledge (4.5±1.4) and practice (3.92±1.7). Hence, the nurses' attitudes towards EBP appeared to be positive, their implementation and knowledge were comparatively moderate. The total EBPQ score was found to be 106.3 out of 168. Conclusions: The study's finding can be used as a starting point for future evaluations and the development of strategies to encourage EBP utilization among nurses in the UAE. Establishing academic and professional development programs for EBP is necessary for organizations and nursing leaders. Combining EBP education with mentor support can encourage nurses to engage in clinical practice informed by the best available evidence.
