This study aimed to obtain evidence of the construct validity and the reliability of the Figure Rating Scales developed by Kakeshita (2008) applied to Brazilian adolescents. After conducting the test-retest in 112 participants with an interval of one month, the results showed that the scales were able to discriminate the different groups of nutritional status in both sexes; showed significant correlation between current BMI, desired BMI and dissatisfaction; and coefficients of elevated intraclass correlation, indicating that the instrument is suitable for assessing body image in this age group.

Résumé

Objective To understand the perceptions of normal and ideal body size in registered nurses and nursing students, and to analyze the impacts of individual weight levels and misperception of body weight on their such cognitions. Methods A cross-sectional survey of 407 nursing students from two hospitals and 466 registered nurses from one hospital was conducted with the questionnaire survey.Sociodemographic information, actual weight, perceived weight levels and scores for figure rating scale were included. Results FRS scores for normal and ideal body size to male were significantly higher than to female either in registered nurses or in nursing students; FRS scores for ideal body size to both sexes were significantly lower than those for normal body size among registered nurses and nursing students. There were no statistically significant associations between FRS scores for normal and ideal body size and individuals' weight levels and misperceptions of body weight among registered nurses and nursing students. Conclusions There existed differences in rating female and male body size among registered nurses and nursing students, with “bigger” normal and ideal body sizes to male,Nurses preferred to “thinner” ideal body size in comparison to normal body size.

The aim of this work was to develop figure rating scales to evaluate the body image of Brazilian adults and children. Adults and children with known Body Mass Index (BMI) were photographed and had their silhouettes drawn. Based on that, the scales were made by computer graphics. To evaluate the reliability of the scales, test-retest was applied with a gap of one month. Participants included 90 adults (18-60 years old) and 69 children (7-12 years old) of both genders. The instruments presented positive and significant correlations between test and retest for the actual BMI and those perceived as current by adults (r=0,84; p 0,01) and children (r=0,61, p 0,01). It was concluded that the developed scales represent useful instruments for clinical and epidemiological research involving body image perception of Brazilian adults and children.
