Résumé

Abstract This is the 1st record of the Sonneratia apetala Buch.-Ham., in the mangroves of South America - Cubatão-Baixada Santista, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The record was made in an area located 2 km apart from the port of Santos. Its arrival was probably made through the ballast water. S. apetala as well an exotic it is also an aggressive mangrove species. All 85 individuals identified were georeferenced. In May 2023 they were flowering and in August they already had ripe fruits/propagules. The presence of exotic species in mangroves is worrying, they can cause profound ecological and economic impacts and negatively influence the restoration of native ecosystems. The presence of S. apetala in the mangroves of Cubatão region could bring about a radical change in the biological structure of the mangrove ecosystem, in addition to being a new point of dispersal to others areas.


Resumo Este é o primeiro registro da ocorrência de Sonneratia apetala Buch.-Ham., na América do Sul, Cubatão-Baixada Santista, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. O registro ocorreu em área situada a 2 km do porto de Santos. Sua presença, se fez, provavelmente, por meio da água de lastro dos navios. A S. apetala é uma espécie exótica agressiva nos manguezais dessa região. Todos os 85 exemplares identificados foram georeferenciados. Em maio de 2023 estavam floridas e em agosto já tinha frutos/propágulos maduros. A presença de espécies exóticas nos manguezais é preocupante, pois são capazes de gerar impactos ecológicos e econômicos e influenciar, negativamente, na restauração desse ecossistema no estuário de Cubatão. A presença da S.apetala, no manguezal da região de Cubatão pode povocar uma mudança radical na estrutura biológica do ecossistema manguezal, além de ser um novo ponto de dispersão para outras áreas.

A planta invasora apresentou maior crescimento na borda florestal do que no interior. Adicionalmente, assimetria foliar e herbivoria obtidos no inverno foram menores quando comparados ao verão. Nossos achados sugerem que os ambientes de borda florestal favorecem o crescimento de T. zebrina. Esta espécie invasora é altamente competitiva no sub-bosque da Floresta Estacional Semidecídua durante o ano todo. Nosso estudo contribui com o manejo de T. zebrina mostrando que o verão é a melhor estação para o controle desta espécie.

Résumé

We aimed to improve the understanding of the establishment of Serrasalmus marginatus (non-native), which was followed by a decrease in the abundance of Serrasalmus maculatus (native) in the upper Paraná River floodplain. We estimated age, mortality rate, length and age at first maturity and variations in gonad development in three time-periods along a 26-year truncated time scale for both species. Population and reproduction parameters of both species showed substantial fluctuations among periods. Most age classes were sampled in all time-periods, but with considerable difference in abundance, with predominance of older individuals in the second time-period and younger individuals in the third time-period for both species. The mortality rates decreased for both species in the second time-period, but increased for the native in the third time-period. Length and age at first maturity decreased in the second time-period for both species, increasing the number of mature individuals on their populations. In the third time-period, the number of immature individuals increased for both species. We suggest that species experienced stressful conditions during cooccurrence and this have resulted in physiological responses in both species, reflecting in population and reproductive adjustments that may have relaxed competitive interactions between them, optimizing survival, reproductive effort and coexistence.(AU)


Nosso objetivo foi aumentar o conhecimento sobre o estabelecimento de Serrasalmus marginatus (não nativa), que foi seguido pela diminuição na abundância de Serrasalmus maculatus (nativa) na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. Estimamos a idade, taxa de mortalidade, comprimento e idade de primeira maturação e variações no desenvolvimento gonadal em três períodos ao longo de 26 anos para as espécies. Os parâmetros populacionais e de reprodução das espécies mostraram flutuações substanciais. A maioria das faixas etárias foi amostrada em todos os períodos, mas com diferenças consideráveis na abundância, predominando indivíduos mais velhos no segundo período e indivíduos mais jovens no terceiro período para ambas as espécies. A taxa de mortalidade diminuiu para as espécies no segundo período, mas aumentou para a espécie nativa no terceiro período. O comprimento e a idade de primeira maturação diminuíram no segundo período para as espécies, aumentando o número de indivíduos adultos. No terceiro período, o número de indivíduos imaturos aumentou para ambas as espécies. Sugerimos que as espécies passaram por condições estressantes durante a coocorrência, resultando em respostas fisiológicas que desencadearam ajustes populacionais e reprodutivos que podem ter minimizado a interação competitiva entre elas, otimizando a sobrevivência, o esforço reprodutivo e a coexistência.(AU)

Biological invasions are leading several species to extinction and are projected as a main driver of biodiversity changes in lakes for this century. However, the knowledge of their impacts on the Neotropical ichthyofauna over time remains largely incipient, especially when considering the functional diversity of native communities. Here we aim to identify the effects of non-native species, especially the non-native piscivorous Cichla kelberi and Pygocentrus nattereri, on the functional diversity of the native ichthyofauna of the Carioca Lake, Middle Rio Doce basin, state of Minas Gerais. Using fish occurrence data for eight years from 1983 to 2010 combined with an ecomorphological-trait analysis, we found that while the native species richness dropped to 56%, the functional richness is only 27% of that found before introductions. In other words, more than species, the ichthyofauna suffered an impressive decline in the range of functional traits, which can further have severe impacts on ecological processes within that system. When considering all the components of the current ichthyofauna (native and non-native species), neither taxonomic nor functional richness have changed over time. However, even keeping biodiversity levels, non-native species are not able to fully compensate for the extinct native ones in terms of functions.(AU)


Invasões biológicas vêm levando várias espécies à extinção, sendo projetado como o principal causador de mudanças na biodiversidade em lagos neste século. Entretanto, o conhecimento dos impactos sobre a ictiofauna Neotropical ao longo do tempo permanece bastante incipiente, especialmente quando se considera a diversidade funcional de comunidades nativas. Neste estudo, nós procuramos identificar os efeitos das espécies não nativas, especialmente os piscívoros não nativos Cichla kelberi and Pygocentrus nattereri, sobre a diversidade funcional da ictiofauna da Lagoa Carioca, bacia do médio rio Doce, Minas Gerais. Utilizando dados de ocorrência de oito anos entre 1983 e 2010, combinados a uma análise de atributos ecomorfológicos, observamos que a riqueza de espécies decaiu a 56%, enquanto a riqueza funcional é de apenas 27% da encontrada antes das introduções. Ou seja, mais do que espécies, a ictiofauna sofreu um declínio significativo na amplitude de atributos funcionais, o que pode levar a impactos severos em processos ecológicos neste sistema. Ao considerar todos os componentes da ictiofauna atual (espécies nativas e não nativas), as métricas de riqueza não sofreram alterações ao longo do tempo. Entretanto, mesmo mantendo os níveis de biodiversidade, espécies não nativas não são capazes de compensar totalmente as espécies nativas extintas em termos funcionais.(AU)

Résumé

Introduction: Invasive species are considered the second cause of extinction of native species after habitat loss. The impacts of invasive species have serious economic implications since the presence of this type of species can result in a decrease in ecosystem services granted to humans. In marine systems, some human activities such as maritime transport and aquaculture have favored the dispersion of invasive species, especially those with commercial importance. This paper describes the potential distribution of the tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, an invasive species along the American Atlantic coast. Objective: To describe a potential distribution model of Penaeus monodon in the American Atlantic region and compare the environmental characteristics of this region with those of the Indo-Pacific original niche conditions. Methods: Using geographic and environmental data, we constructed and tested three models to determine the efficiency of MaxEnt v. 3.3 software in predicting new areas for the distribution of this invasive shrimp species. Geographic data were downloaded from such web sites as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, the Ocean Biogeographic Information System, and the United States Geological Survey, as well from literature. Environmental data were downloaded from Bio-Oracle v2.0 data base. The three tested models were: 1) the first was created using only recordings of Penaeus monodon from the Indo-Pacific (its origin zone) and then projected to the Atlantic (native model); 2) the second was built using only recordings from the invaded area; the training and projection area of this model was the Atlantic (invasive model); 3) the third included recordings from both the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic regions, and the model was trained and projected jointly in both areas (complete model). We extracted the values of the three models for each tiger shrimp sightings in the invaded area; sightings with values ³ 0.5 were considered as valid prediction of occurrence of the species. Results: We found that the following variables explained 80 % of species distribution: phosphates from the ocean surface, coastal type, chlorophyll a, and maximum bottom temperature. In terms of the models' ability to predict the occurrences reported in the Atlantic, results were as follows: Native model had a prediction index of 40 %; Invasive model was able to predict 81 % of recordings; and complete model predicted 92 % of total occurrences reported in the invaded area. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that based on the complete model, the countries where the tiger shrimp could establish itself are Mexico and Cuba. Continuous monitoring and conservation actions are relevant in the countries where this species is currently established, as well of those countries with potential for invasions.


Introducción: Las especies invasoras son consideradas como la segunda causa de extinción de especies nativas después de la pérdida del hábitat. Los impactos de las especies invasivas tienen serias implicaciones económicas, ya que su presencia puede resultar en un decremento de los servicios ecosistémicos que benefician al hombre. En los sistemas marinos, algunas actividades humanas como el transporte marítimo y la acuicultura han favorecido la dispersión de especies invasivas, especialmente aquellas con importancia comercial. Este artículo describe la distribución potencial del camarón tigre, Penaeus monodon, una especie invasora a lo largo de la costa Atlántica Occidental. Objetivo: Describir un modelo de distribución potencial de Penaeus monodon en la región del Atlántico americano y comparar las características ambientales de esta región con las condiciones del nicho original del Indo-Pacífico. Metodología: Usando datos geográficos y ambientales, se generaron tres modelos para determinar la eficiencia del software MaxEnt v.3.3 en la predicción de nuevas áreas para la distribución de esta especie invasora. Los datos geográficos se descargaron de sitios web como el Fondo para la Información sobre la Biodiversidad Mundial, el Sistema de Información Biogeográfica del Océano y el Servicio Geológico de los Estados Unidos de América, así como de la literatura. Los datos ambientales fueron descargados de Bio-Oracle v2.0. Los tres modelos probados fueron: 1) registros de P. monodon de la región del Indo-Pacífico (zona de origen) y su proyección al Océano Atlántico (modelo nativo); 2) registros del área invadida, al utilizar el Océano Atlántico como área de entrenamiento y proyección del modelo (modelo invasivo); y 3) registros de las áreas Indo-Pacífico y Atlántico para capacitar y proyectar el modelo conjuntamente en ambas áreas (modelo completo). Extrajimos los valores de los tres modelos para cada avistamiento de camarones tigre en el área invadida; los avistamientos con valores ³ 0.5 fueron considerados como predicciones válidas de presencia de la especie. Resultados: Los resultados mostraron que las siguientes variables explicaron el 80 % de la distribución de la especie: fosfatos del fondo marino, tipo de costa, clorofila a y temperatura máxima del fondo. En términos de las capacidades de los modelos para predecir las presencias reportadas en el Atlántico, los resultados fueron los siguientes: modelo nativo, tuvo un índice de predicción del 40 %; modelo invasivo fue capaz de predecir el 81 % de los registros; y modelo completo predijo el 92 % de las ocurrencias totales reportadas en el área de invasión. Conclusiones: Se encontró que, con base en el modelo conjunto, los países donde el camarón tigre se podría establecer son México y Cuba. Esto sugiere que el monitoreo continuo y las acciones de conservación son relevantes en los países donde esta especie está actualmente establecida, así como en aquellos países con el potencial de ser invadidos.

Résumé

Abstract Thirteen species of drosophilid exotic to the Neotropical Region are recorded in Brazil, and some of them are highly invasive and threaten significantly fruit cultures. We provide an illustrated key for identifying these species, and briefly discuss their taxonomic status, distribution, and occurrence in the Neotropics. The key should not only support newcomers to the study of Drosophila but also facilitate their identification by those interested in insects associated with cultivated areas.

Introduction: There is a large information gap on the occurrence of non-native species and their impacts on native biodiversity in the Amazon region in Brazil. Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize the floristic composition of a protected area in Manaus, Amazonas, and assess the potential impact of non-native invasive species. Methods: A floristic survey was carried out in 30 plots measuring 20 x 20 m with 1 x 1 m subplots. The estimated parameters were density, frequency, dominance, Importance Value Index (IVI), and Environmental Impact of Non-Native Species (IIAE). Results: In total, 8 out of 264 species registered in the tree-shrub layer were not native. A total of 61 species were identified in the herbaceous layer, five of which were non-native. The impact is estimated based on the highest abundance of species of non-native species. Conclusions: The presence of non-native species in the study area is an indication of a potential impact on biodiversity and ecosystem functions.


Introducción: Existe un gran vacío de información sobre especies exóticas y sus impactos sobre la biodiversidad nativa en la región amazónica de Brasil. Objetivo: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar la composición florística de un área protegida en Manaos, Amazonas, y evaluar el impacto potencial de las especies no nativas. Métodos: Se realizó un inventario florístico en 30 parcelas de 20 x 20 m, con subparcelas de 1 x 1 m. Los parámetros estimados fueron: densidad, frecuencia, predominancia, Índice de Valor de Importancia (IVI) e Impacto Ambiental de Especies no Nativas (IIAE). Resultados: En total, 8 de las 264 especies registradas en el estrato arbustivo no son nativas. Un total de 61 especies fueron identificadas en el estrato herbáceo, cinco de las cuales no son nativas. El impacto se estimó con base en la más alta abundancia de las especies de hierbas no nativas. Conclusiones: La presencia de especies no nativas en el área es un indicador de impactos potenciales sobre la biodiversidad y las funciones del ecosistema.

Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus is an invasive species widely spread throughout freshwater ecosystems in central Mexico, for that reason we described its trophic strategy into a gradient of environmental quality. We sampled individuals of P. bimaculatus at eight sites located in the Lerma-Chapala and Pánuco River Basins during dry season. These basins have been impacted by industrialization and urbanization processes, but are considered as water reserves in México. To evaluate the environmental quality of the river, we applied the Visual-based Habitat Assessment, the Index of Biological Integrity and the Family-level Biotic Index. We assessed the trophic guild, the diet width, the omnivory level, and the diet selectivity. We also explored the relation of trophic strategies with the habitat condition. We captured a total of 202 individuals of P. bimaculatus from 10 to 67 mm of SL, finding a total of 24 food items. The diet of P. bimaculatus was composed of terrestrial, aquatic insects and bony fish. Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus in some sites can feed on different trophic levels, in other it is a specialist and secondary consumer. We found that P. bimaculatus changes its diet according the alterations in the habitat structure, water quality, and biotic integrity. Moreover, this invasive species can endure changes in the trophic web and food availability.(AU)


Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus es una especie invasora ampliamente propagada en los ecosistemas de agua dulce del centro de México, por eso se describe su estrategia trófica en un gradiente de calidad ambiental. Se muestrearon individuos de P. bimaculatus en ocho sitios localizados en las cuencas de los Ríos Lerma-Chapala y Pánuco durante la temporada de secas. Estas cuencas se han visto afectadas por los procesos de industrialización y urbanización, pero la Comisión Nacional del Agua las considera reservas de agua en México. Para evaluar las condiciones ambientales de las cuencas, aplicamos el Índice de Integridad Biótica basado y el Índice Biótico basado en Familias. Evaluamos el gremio trófico, la amplitud de la dieta y la selectividad de la dieta de P. bimaculatus en sitios con diferente calidad ambiental. Además, exploramos la relación de las estrategias tróficas con la condición del hábitat. Capturamos un total de 202 individuos de P. bimaculatus de 10 a 67 mm de LP, encontrando un total de 24 artículos alimenticios. La dieta de P. bimaculatus está compuesta de insectos terrestres y acuáticos y restos óseos de peces. Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus en algunos sitios puede alimentarse de diferentes niveles tróficos, en otros, es especialista y consumidor secundario. Encontramos que P. bimaculatus cambia su dieta acorde con alteraciones en la estructura del hábitat, la calidad del agua y la integridad biótica. Además, esta especie invasora puede tolerar cambios en la red trófica y la disponibilidad de alimento.(AU)

Among Neotropical freshwater ecoregions, the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga (MNCE) is a fish knowledge gap. Its temporary drainages are receptors of the São Francisco interbasin water transfer project (SFR-IWT) in the Brazilian semiarid. We provide a comprehensive baseline of fish richness of the five SFR-IWT basins. Species richness, shared, endemic, threatened and non-native species were obtained using sampling, ichthyologic collections, literature and online repositories (306 localities). In total 121, species were recorded, 111 of them native, and 16 (14.41%) listed for all basins. Higher richness of native species (78, 70.27%) was recorded in the São Francisco lower-middle stretch (SFRE), including 23 endemic, 61 (54.95%) in MNCE basins (13 endemic), and 28 (25.23%) shared between both ecoregions. In the MNCE, 50 species were recorded in Jaguaribe (JAG), 39 in Piranhas-Açu, 36 in Paraíba do Norte, and 32 in Apodi-Mossoró (APO). The number of species shared between the SFRE and each receptor basin varied from 24 (23.08%, JAG) to 20 (22.22%, APO). JAG contains 81.97% of the receptor basins' species. Its higher richness and endemism deserve special attention regarding the ongoing hydrological changes. This study will help detect possible modifications in the ichthyofauna of the main MNCE drainages.(AU)


Dentre as ecorregiões dulcícolas neotropicais, a Nordeste Médio-Oriental (MNCE) é uma lacuna de conhecimento sobre peixes. Suas drenagens temporárias são receptoras do projeto de transposição do São Francisco (SFR-IWT) no semiárido brasileiro. Fornecemos uma linha de base abrangente da riqueza de peixes das cinco bacias do SFR-IWT. Riqueza de espécies, espécies compartilhadas, endêmicas, ameaçadas e não-nativas foram obtidas através de amostragem, coleções ictiológicas, literatura e repositórios online (306 localidades). No total, foram registradas 121 espécies, 111 nativas e 16 (14,41%) listadas para todas as bacias. A maior riqueza de espécies nativas (78, 70,27%) foi registrada no trecho sub-médio do São Francisco (SFRE), incluindo 23 endêmicas e 61 (54,95%) nas bacias da MNCE (13 endêmicas), e 28 (25,23 %) compartilhadas entre ambas ecorregiões. Na MNCE, foram registradas 50 espécies na Jaguaribe (JAG), 39 na Piranhas-Açu, 36 na Paraíba do Norte e 32 na Apodi-Mossoró (APO). O número de espécies compartilhadas entre SFRE e cada bacia receptora variou de 24 (23,08%, JAG) a 20 (22,22%, APO). JAG contém 81,97% das espécies das bacias receptoras. Sua maior riqueza e endemismo merecem atenção especial em relação às mudanças hidrológicas em curso. Este estudo ajudará a detectar possíveis modificações na ictiofauna das principais drenagens da MNCE.(AU)

Introduction: Little is known concerning novel interactions between species that typically interact in their native range but, as a consequence of human activity, are also interacting out of their original distribution under new ecological conditions. Objective: We investigate the interaction between the orange tree and wild boar, both of which share Asian origins and have been introduced to the Americas (i.e. the overseas). Methods: Specifically, we assessed whether i) wild boars consume orange (Citrus sinensis) fruits and seeds in orchards adjacent to a remnant of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, ii) the orange seeds are viable after passing through boar's digestive tract and iii) whether the orange tree may naturalise in the forest remnant assisted by wild boars. Results: Our camera surveys indicated that wild boar was by far the most frequent consumer of orange fruits (40.5 % of camera trap-days). A considerable proportion of sown orange seeds extracted from fresh boar feces emerged seedlings (27.8 %, N = 386) under controlled greenhouse conditions. Further, 37.6 % of sown seeds (N = 500) in the forest remnant emerged seedlings in July 2015; however, after ~4 years (March 2019) only 9 seedlings survived (i.e. 4.8 %, N = 188). Finally, 52 sweet orange seedlings were found during surveys within the forest remnant which is intensively used by wild boars. This study indicates a high potential of boars to act as effective seed dispersers of the sweet orange. However, harsh competition with native vegetation and the incidence of lethal diseases, which quickly kill sweet orange trees under non-agricultural conditions, could seriously limit orange tree establishment in the forest. Conclusions: Our results have important implications not only because the wild boar could be a vector of potential invasive species, but also because they disperse seeds of some native species (e.g. the queen palm, Syagrus romanzofiana) in defaunated forests, where large native seed dispersers are missing; thus, wild boars could exert critical ecological functions lost due to human activity.


Introducción: Se conoce relativamente poco sobre las llamadas 'interacciones noveles' entre especies que típicamente interactúan en su área de distribución nativa pero que, como consecuencia de la actividad humana, también interactúan fuera de su distribución original bajo nuevas condiciones ecológicas. Objetivo: Investigamos la interacción entre el naranjo y el jabalí, ambos con origen asiático e introducidos en las Américas (es decir, del extranjero). Métodos: Específicamente, evaluamos si i) los jabalíes consumen frutas y semillas del naranjo (Citrus sinensis) en naranjales adyacentes a un parche remanente del bosque atlántico de Brasil, ii) las semillas de naranja son viables tras pasar por el tracto digestivo del jabalí, y iii) si el naranjo puede llegar a naturalizarse en el parche de bosque gracias a los jabalíes. Resultados: Los resultados de nuestro fototrampeo indicaron que el jabalí fue, con mucho, el consumidor más frecuente de las naranjas (40.5 % cámaras trampa-días). Una proporción considerable de semillas de naranjo extraídas de heces de jabalí frescas y sembradas emergieron plántulas bajo condiciones de invernadero controladas (27.8 %, N = 386). Además, del 37.6 % de las semillas sembradas (N = 500) en el parche remanente de bosque emergieron plántulas en julio 2015; sin embargo, después de ~ 4 años (marzo 2019) solo sobrevivieron 9 plántulas (es decir, 4.8 %, N = 188). Finalmente, se encontraron 52 plántulas de naranja dulce durante varias prospecciones dentro del parche de bosque que es utilizado intensivamente por los jabalíes. Este estudio indica un alto potencial de los jabalíes para actuar como dispersores de semillas eficaces del naranjo dulce. Sin embargo, la severa competencia con la abundante vegetación nativa y la incidencia de enfermedades letales, que matan rápidamente los naranjos dulces en condiciones no agrícolas, podrían limitar seriamente el establecimiento de naranjos en el bosque. Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados tienen implicaciones importantes no solo porque el jabalí podría ser un vector de posibles especies de plantas invasoras, sino también porque dispersan semillas de algunas especies nativas (p.e., la palmera reina, Syagrus romanzofiana) en estos bosques defaunados, donde faltan dispersores nativos de semillas de gran tamaño. Por ello, los jabalíes podrían ejercer funciones ecológicas críticas que se han perdido debido a la actividad humana.

The introduction of nonnative species is one of the main threats to freshwater ecosystems. Although omnivory and intraguild predation are common in those systems, little is known about the effects of introduced omnivorous fish on pelagic and littoral communities. This study tested predictions of food-web theory regarding the effects of omnivorous fish introduction on previously fishless lakes in the Amazonian uplands of Serra dos Carajás, Pará, Brazil. The trophic structure of two similar lakes, one with and the other without the introduced omnivorous fish Astyanax bimaculatus, was compared using a data series of biotic variables collected from both lakes twice a year from 2010 to 2013. Zooplankton was more abundant in the lake with fish, and the zooplankton composition differed between lakes. Phytoplankton richness and chlorophyll-a were higher in the lake with the introduced fish than in the fishless lake regardless of phosphorus limitation. For the benthic macroinvertebrate communities, species richness and biomass were higher in the fishless lake. Our results also indicate that A. bimaculatus has the potential to link pelagic and littoral habitats through nutrient cycling. The differences observed between the studied lakes are consistent with predictions from food-web theory regarding the effects of multichain omnivorous fish on trophic dynamics. Despite limitations regarding replication at the ecosystem level, it is possible to infer from our findings that the introduction of an omnivorous fish might have changed lake overall functioning. Resumen Desde el 2011, los pescadores artesanales de Taganga (Caribe colombiano) capturaron al pez león en nasas para el Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona. Este hecho generó la percepción de que el pez león causó la disminución de la pesca. Para determinar los cambios en las especies capturadas y conocer la abundancia del pez león en este arte, se analizó el desembarco histórico en nasas entre 1993 y 2014, así como, el desembarque a tres unidades económicas de pesca entre marzo 2012 y julio 2014. El análisis histórico mostró que la disminución de las especies y los kilogramos desembarcados ocurrió desde el 2000. Un total de 4 913 individuos fueron desembarcados entre marzo 2012 y julio 2014, de los cuales el 85 % fueron especies de interés comercial y el resto fueron utilizadas por los pescadores para su consumo. Los desembarcos entre marzo 2012 y julio 2014 estuvieron condicionados a factores climáticos, donde la co-ocurrencia de Pterois volitans y las principales especies comerciales y de autoconsumo no mostró evidencia de que el pez león afecte sus abundancias. Se confirma así la presencia del pez león como un nuevo integrante en los desembarcos en nasas en la Bahía de Taganga.


Abstract Incidental catch in traps of the lionfish Pterois volitans (Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae) in the Colombian Caribbean. Since 2011, small-scale fishermen from Taganga Bay (Colombian Caribbean) have been catching lionfish in traps in the Tayrona National Natural Park, which had caused them to believe that the lionfish is the cause of the decrease in overall fishing. In order to determine the changes in the species captured and to know the abundance of the lionfish in this fishing method, we analyzed the historical landings in traps between 1993 and 2014, as well as the landing of three fishing units between March 2012 and July 2014. The historical analysis showed that the decline in species and kilograms landed has been occurring since 2000. A total of 4 913 specimens were landed between March 2012 and July 2014, of which 85 % were species of commercial interest, and the rest were used by fishermen for consumption. Landings between 2012 and 2014 were conditioned by climatic conditions, where the co-occurrence between Pterois volitans and the main commercial species and self-consumption did not provide evidence of the lionfish affecting its abundance. ABSTRACT The invasive white ginger lily (Hedichium coronarium - J. Köenig, 1783) simplifies the trait composition of an insect assemblage in the littoral zone of a Savanna reservoir. Invasive plants are believed to shift the trait composition of aquatic insects dwelling in banks of lentic ecosystems. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between the presence of the invasive white ginger lily (H. coronarium) and the functional trait indices of the aquatic insect assemblage in the littoral zone of a tropical reservoir. We sampled aquatic insects on the invaded and non-invaded banks of the reservoir and then analyzed the insect trait indices by estimating the Functional Dispersion (FDis), Functional Evenness (FEve) and the Functional Divergence (FDiv), as well as the Community level Weight-Mean traits (CWM). Finally, we compared these indices between invaded and non-invaded banks as well as their relationship with the abiotic variables, such as dissolved oxygen, pH, depth and water temperature. The result confirmed that the invaded banks had lower values of functional indices as well as dissolved oxygen. However, this abiotic variable was found to have no effect on the functional indices. In addition, the white ginger lily bank presented higher contribution of collector-gathering to predator-piercer groups. We suggest that the invasion of white ginger lily promotes low heterogeneity habitat resulting in simplification on functional traits of aquatic insect assemblage.

Informal sales of large-bodied non-native aquarium fishes (known as "tankbusters") is increasing among Brazilian hobbyists. In this study, we surveyed this non-regulated trade on Facebook® from May 2012 to September 2016, systematically collecting information about the fishes available for trading: species, family, common/scientific names, native range, juvenile length, behavior, number of specimens available in five geographical regions from Brazil. We also assessed the invasion risk of the most frequently sold species using the Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST). We found 93 taxa belonging to 35 families. Cichlidae was the dominant family, and most species were native to South America. All species are sold at very small sizes (< 10.0 cm), and most display aggressive behavior. The hybrid Amphilophus trimaculatus × Amphilophus citrinellus, Astronotus ocellatus, Uaru amphiacanthoides, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Cichla piquiti, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Datnioides microlepis and Cichla kelberi were the main species available. The southeast region showed the greatest trading activity. Based on biological traits, the FIST indicated that Arapaima gigas, C. kelberi and C. temensis are high-risk species in terms of biological invasions via aquarium dumping. We suggest management strategies such as trade regulations, monitoring, euthanasia and educational programs to prevent further introductions via aquarium dumping.(AU)


A venda de juvenis de peixes não-nativos de grandes dimensões, chamados de "peixes jumbo", está aumentando entre aquaristas no Brasil. Neste trabalho, pesquisou-se este comércio informal pelo Facebook® de maio/2012 a setembro/2016, coletando-se informações sobre espécies, família, nomes vulgares/científicos, origem, tamanho juvenil, comportamento e número/frequência de exemplares disponíveis nas cinco regiões geográficas do Brasil. Também avaliou-se o risco de invasão das espécies mais vendidas usando o protocolo Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST). Foram encontradas 93 espécies pertencentes a 35 famílias. Cichlidae foi a família dominante, e a maioria das espécies é nativa da América do Sul. Todas as espécies foram vendidas como juvenis (< 10.0 cm), e a maioria exibe comportamento agressivo. O híbrido Amphilophus trimaculatus × Amphilophus citrinellus, Astronotus ocellatus, Uaru amphiacanthoides, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Cichla piquiti, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Datnioides microlepis e Cichla kelberi foram as espécies mais comercializadas. A região sudeste apresentou a maior porcentagem de vendas, e o FIST mostrou que Arapaima gigas, C. kelberi e C. temensis foram consideradas de alto risco para desencadear invasões biológicas mediadas por descarte de aquários. Recomendações como a regulação do comércio, monitoramento, sacrifício das espécies e campanhas educacionais para os aquaristas são sugeridas para evitar futuras introduções de peixes via descarte de aquários.(AU)

The introduction of the golden mussel, Limnoperna fortunei(Dunker, 1857) in South America was related to the discharge of ballast water, with its first record in 1991 in the La Plata River estuary. Since then, the species is spreading throughout the continent, with several economic and ecological negative consequences. Aim: To model, in the headwaters of Parana River, the spatial distribution ofL. fortunei and to understand the determinants of the current pattern of species distribution and the risk of invasion of areas not yet colonized. Methods: The ecological niche of L. fortunei was modeled using the algorithm MAXENT (Maximum Entropy Method) combined with records of occurrence of the bivalve, limnological data and the shear force measured by the index Hack (SL). The evaluation of the performance of different models was based on AUC (Area Under the Curve).The analysis of each variable's contribution to the responses of the models was made based on the Jackknife test, available in the Maxent program. The models were validated with real absence data collected between 2006 and 2007. Based on the limnological characterization of the area and on outputs of the models, this analysis sought to understand the contributing aspects to the current and potential spatial distribution and to verify the risk of invasion of environments not yet colonized by the species. Results/Conclusion: The limnological characterization showed that the ecological requirements for the species as, pH, calcium, oxygen and chlorophyll a, were appropriate in both the connected stretches, invaded and non-invaded. Turbidity showed significant spatial differences which proved to be higher in environments with higher levels of Hack (SL), i.e. higher energy fluvial. In addition, the algorithm showed the importance of hydrodynamical aspects expressed by Hack index (SL) to the spatial distribution of species, since the models with the best performances were those that considered the Hack index (SL) as one of the environmental layers of the mussel's niche. All models indicated a high risk of invasion into the reservoir of São Simão.


A introdução do mexilhão dourado, Limnoperna fortunei(Dunker, 1857) na América do Sul esteve relacionada ès descargas de água de lastro, com seu primeiro registro em 1991, no estuário do rio da Prata. Desde então a espécie vai adentrando o continente - com várias consequências negativas em âmbitos econômicos e ecológicos. Objetivo: modelar em escala local a distribuição espacial de L. fortunei buscando melhor entender os fatores determinantes do padrão atual de distribuição da espécie e estimar o risco de invasão de áreas ainda não colonizadas. Métodos: A modelagem do nicho de L. fortunei foi realizada por meio do algoritmo MAXENT (Maximum Entropy Method) aliado a registros de ocorrência do bivalve, è dados limnológicos e è força de cisalhamento medida pelo índice de Hack (SL). A avaliação do desempenho dos diferentes modelos foi feita com base na AUC (Área sob a Curva). A análise da contribuição isolada das diferentes variáveis para as respostas dos modelos foi feita com base no teste Jackknife disponível no programa Maxent. Os modelos gerados foram validados com dados reais de ausência coletados entre 2006 e 2007. Com base na caracterização limnológica da área e nas respostas geradas pelos modelos de distribuição potencial, buscou-se entender quais aspectos estariam contribuindo para a distribuição espacial atual e potencial e verificar o risco de invasão de ambientes ainda não colonizados pela espécie. Resultados/Conclusão: A caracterização limnológica mostrou que os requerimentos ecológicos para a espécie como pH, cálcio, oxigênio e clorofila a foram igualmente adequados entre trechos invadidos e não invadidos conectados. Diferenças espaciais significativas foram encontradas em relação è turbidez, que se mostrou mais elevada nos ambientes com maiores índices de Hack (SL), ou seja, com maior energia fluvial. O algoritmo utilizado mostrou a importância de aspectos hidrodinâmicos, expressos pelo índice de Hack (SL) na distribuição espacial da espécie, uma vez que, os modelos com melhor desempenho foram aqueles que consideraram o índice de Hack (SL) como uma das camadas ambientais na composição do nicho da espécie. Todos os modelos indicaram também o alto risco de invasão para o reservatório de São Simão.

Diet, energy density (ED) and relative condition factor (Kn ) were used to investigate the energetic assimilation of the invasive fish Hemiodus orthonops under different environmental condition of the upper rio Paraná floodplain. Samples were taken in June and September 2013 and 2014. Nutrient content was determined for sediment. The diet was combined in the Food Index (IAi%), ED was expressed in Kcal/g of dry weight and Kn was calculated by: Kn = Wt/We, where Wt is the total weight and We the expected weight. Detritus/sediment prevailed in the stomachs of specimens from Ivinhema and Baia, while Algae was the main item in Paraná, reflecting the resource availability. ED and Kn from Ivinhema specimens were the greatest, consequence of the quality of food and lower spent on searching and handling food. The Paraná specimens showed lower ED values, but higher Kn values, due to algae consumption, a nutrient-rich resource. Baia presented high aluminum concentration on the sediment and the lower pH values, which contribute to reduce the nutritional value of the detritus and the ED and Kn values of their specimens. In conclusion, H.orthonops is capable to take advantage of the resources availability in the different environments, ensuring their establishment.


Análise de dieta, densidade energética (DE) e fator de condição relativo (Kn ) foram utilizados para investigar a assimilação energética do peixe invasor Hemiodus orthonops sob diferentes condições ambientais da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. As coletas ocorreram em junho e setembro de 2013 e 2014. O teor de nutrientes foi obtido para o sedimento. A dieta foi combinada no Índice Alimentar (IAi%), a DE foi expressa em Kcal/g de peso seco, o Kn foi calculado através de: Kn = Wt/We, onde Wt é o peso total e We o peso esperado. Detrito/sedimento prevaleceu nos estômagos dos espécimes do Ivinhema e Baía, enquanto Alga foi o principal item no Paraná, refletindo a disponibilidade de recursos. A DE e Kn dos indivíduos do Ivinhema foram os maiores, consequência da qualidade do alimento e do menor gasto em procura e manipulação do alimento. Os indivíduos do Paraná registraram os menores valores de DE, mas elevados valores de Kn , devido ao consumo de alga, um recurso alimentar rico em nutrientes. Baía apresentou elevada concentração de alumínio no sedimento e reduzidos valores de pH, o que contribuiu com a redução do valor nutricional do detrito e dos valores de DE e Kn dos indivíduos. Concluindo, H. orthonops é capaz de se beneficiar da disponibilidade de recursos nos diferentes ambientes, garantindo seu estabelecimento.
