El empoderamiento o empowerment en inglés se define como la capacidad de hacer poderoso o fuerte a un individuo o colectivo, es una característica que debe tener todo profesional de la salud, sin embargo, no en todas las disciplinas que convergen en la atención de la persona sana o enferma ha permeado de la misma manera, por lo que este trabajo tiene la finalidad de realizar un análisis reflexivo de la realidad de la enfermería mexicana y su estatus de empoderamiento. Desde el enfoque de género, desarrollo humano y teórico, el empoderamiento de enfermería tiene un nivel individual, organizacional y social, la realidad de la enfermería mexicana analizada desde estos enfoques no es la ideal y debe ser modificada con el conocimiento generado a través de la investigación, que le dé poder en la toma de decisiones sobre el cuidado de la persona, la autonomía y el ejercicio interdependiente de la profesión dentro del equipo de salud, de manera multidisciplinar y transdisciplinar con una distribución del poder que le permita avanzar, tener acceso a la información y a los recursos.
