Objective:To explore the safety and effectiveness of medium-frequency electrotherapy for increasing the volume of the latissimus dorsi muscle. Methods:Fifteen adult New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups, namely group A, group B, and group C, with 5 rabbits in each group. This was a self-control study, with the right latissimus dorsi muscle as the experimental group and the left latissimus dorsi muscle as the control group. The three groups corresponded to three different current intensity levels: 7.062 mA for group A (6th gear), 10.593 mA for group B (9th gear), and 14.124 mA for group C (12th gear). After the 12th, 24th, and 36th sessions of the experiment, ultrasonography was used to collect the thickness of the latissimus dorsi muscle. After the 36th electrostimulation, the latissimus dorsi muscle samples were collected to measure their in vivo muscle thickness and wet weight and were then sent for HE and MASSON staining. Results:After the 12th, 24th, and 36th electrostimulation sessions, ultrasonographic sampling in groups A and B showed an increase in the thickness of the right latissimus dorsi muscle compared to the left; for example, the thickness on the right of group B increased by 37.8%. The wet weight data collected after the 36th electrostimulation in groups A and B showed an increase in the right latissimus dorsi muscle compared to the left; for example, the wet weight on the right of group B increased by 5.04%.Conclusions:Different electrostimulation modes of medium-frequency therapy technology can induce muscle fiber thickening or atrophy. In this experiment, the 9th gear (10.593 mA) of medium-frequency therapy technology may be a suitable choice for inducing muscle fiber thickening, and the 12th gear (14.124 mA) may be a suitable choice for inducing skeletal muscle thinning.

RÉSUMÉ

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effects of electromyography biofeedback (EMGBF) on motor and psychological function in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI).Methods Seventy SCI patients were randomly divided into research and control groups with 35 patients in each.In addition to conventional rehabilitation, the patients in the research group received EMGBF training while those in the control group were treated with medium frequency electrotherapy. To evaluate the patients' self confidence and motor function of their paralyzed limbs,Rosenberg's self-esteem scale (RSES) and American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) locomotor function scoring were performed before and six weeks after the interventions in both groups of patients. The changes of EMG of the quadriceps, hamstring and anterior tibial muscles of both groups in maximum contraction were also observed before and six weeks after the interventions. Results There were no significant differences in the RSES scores or ASIA locomotor function results between the groups before the interventions.ASIA locomotor function evaluation scores increased significantly in both groups after the interventions, with significantly better results in the research group. The RSES scores in the research group also improved significantly after the interventions, and RSES scoring and ASIA scoring were positively correlated in those patients. But no significant improvement in average RSES scores was found in the control group. The muscle contraction EMG amplitudes also increased significantly in patients of the research group after the interventions. Conclusions EMGBF training can enhance patients' self-confidence,which helps patients with SCI improve their motor functions.

Objective To evaluate the effects of modulated, medium frequency electrotherapy on hemodynamics after thoracic surgery to provide non-pharmacological measures for preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT).Methods Seventy thoracic surgery patients were divided into an experimental group and a control group. Both groups received conventional treatment and nursing. The experimental group (35 patients) was treated with modulated, medium frequency electrotherapy additionally while the control group (35 patients) was not. The vein systolic maximum velocity (Vmax), vein diastolic minimum velocity (Vmin) and time-averaged mean velocity (TAVM) in the femoral vein, the superficial femoral vein, the deep femoral vein, the popliteal vein and the anterior tibial vein were observed before the operation, 4h after the operation, just after 20 minutes of electrotherapy, 15 min after the electrotherapy and 30 min after the electrotherapy. Results There were significant differences among the time points in the experimental group. There was no significant difference among the time points in the control group. There were significant differences in lower extremity hemodynamics between the experimental group and the control group at end of the electrotherapy session, but no significant differences at the later time points. Conclusions Modulated, medium frequency electrotherapy has a significant effect on lower extremity hemodynamics. It is an effective method for DVT prophylaxis in perioperative thoracic surgical patients.

@#ObjectiveTo observe the effect of comprehensive therapy on forearm extensor myotenositis.Methods72 cases were divided into two groups: a control group of 36 cases who were given routine treatment, and an experiment group of 36 cases who were given thermotherapy, computerized medium-frequency electrotherapy, physiotherapy, and ADL instruction, etc. After two courses,a simple grading score(for forearms) was used to assess the effect.ResultsOf the control group,22 cases were cured,10 remarkably effective,4 effective;of the experiment,30 cured,4 remarkably effective,2 effective(u=2.04, P<0.05).The difference of average score for forearms before and after the treatment were(6.58±3.17) points for the control and(8.19±3.55) for the experiment(t=2.03,P<0.05).The average days of cure were(5.60±2.54) d for the experiment group, shorter than those for the control(7.00±2.27) d(t=2.05,P<0.05).ConclusionComprehensive therapy is effective on forearm extensor myotenositis.

@# ObjectiveTo study the rehabilitation effect on metatarsalyia with combination of thermotherapy, computerized medium-frequency electrotherapy, exercise therapy and ADL.Methods70 cases with metatarsalyia were randomly divided into two groups: the control group of 35 cases who were given routine treatment and the experiment group of 35 cases who were added thermotherapy, computerized medium-frequency electrotherapy, exercise therapy and ADL. 30 days later, the evaluating score for walking was used to evaluate the rehabilitation effect.ResultsIn the control group, 14 cases were cured, 8 cases remarkably effective, 10 effective and 3 ineffective, while that in the experiment group was 22 cured, 7 remarkably effective, 5 effective, and 1 ineffective(P<0.05). The mean of the difference in evaluation scoring before and after the treatment was (28.00±20.26) for the control,(38.29±21.35) for the experiment (P<0.05). The average cure days was (18.00±6.45) for the experiment and (23.00±7.64) for the control(P<0.05).ConclusionThe combined treatment produces is remarkably effective for metatarsalyia.

Objective To observe the effects of ultrasound medium frequency electrotherapy on pain and content of enkephalins. Methods The pain threshold of the rat was measured before and after the application of ultrasound medium frequency electrotherapy. The content of met enhephalin(MEK) and leu enkephalin(LEK) in the glandula hypophysis and hypothalamus was also measured. A linear regression analysis based on the pain threshold and the content of enkaphalin was conducted to reveal the pain relieving mechanism of the ultrasound medium frequency electrotherapy. Results The level of MEK and LEK in the glandula hypophysis and hypothalamus was significantly increased after a single use action ultrasound medium frequency electrotherapy as compared with that before the treatment ( P
