ABSTRACT Talinum paniculatum is an adventitious herb widely distributed in the Argentina. This plant is considered as an economically important herbicide-resistant weed. This species shows two morphotypes in the field which are differentiated by shape, size and colour of their flowers leaves and fruits. The aims of this work were to determinate morpho-anatomical (leave and stem), cytogenetic and molecular traits of two morphotypes from Tucumán province (Argentina) and to establish differences between them. Classical morpho-anatomical and cytogenetic techniques were used, molecular analysis based on the ITS2 marker were performed. The results showed that morphological, anatomical, cytogenetic and molecular traits of T. paniculatum allow us to differentiate the MT1 and MT2 morphotypes. We concluded that MT1 match with T. paniculatum and MT2 is a different taxon still not described for the flora of Argentina.

Résumé

Aim: Rotifer research on sessile taxa has received less attention because they are not easy to identify in fixed samples. In the Lake Xochimilco, a Ramsar site in Mexico City, three morphotypes of L. ceratophylli and a single morphotype of L. cf. melicerta occur in different densities. The aim of this study was to test if temperature was responsible for the differences in the population densities of these morphotypes. Methodology: The present study was carried out using population growth method consisting of 4 treatments (3 morphotypes of L. ceratophylli and one of L. cf. melicerta) at 20 and 25°C. Experiments were carried out in 50 ml glass jars containing 25 ml synthetic medium with Chlorella vulgaris as food. The population growth rates (r) were derived. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests were used to quantify the intra-and interspecific differences in the population growth rates. Results: The temperature levels for optimal population growth rates differed among the morphotypes of same species. At 20°C, the morphotype 1 had the highest r (0.23 d-1) similar to that of L. cf. melicerta, while morphotype 3 had the lowest (0.15 d-1). For L. cf. melicerta, the r was higher at 25°C than at 20°C. Of three morphotypes of L. ceratophylli, morphotype 3 had the highest r at 25°C similar to that of L. cf. melicerta at same temperature. Interpretation: There were significant differences among growth patterns within the morphotypes of L. ceratophylli, depending on culture temperature. These trends highlight the relative importance of environmental variables in differentiating morphotypes of a sessile species complex which could explain their possible seasonal changes in the natural waterbodies.

Résumé

Using morphometric measurements and wavelets functions, the asterisci otoliths of curimatã, Prochilodus nigricans were analysed to identify the variation in shape and growth increment of individuals from Solimões, Japurá and Negro rivers of the Amazon basin, Brazil. The morphometric and morphological analyses did not reveal evidences of population segregation among rivers, but variations were found in the estimation of otolith growth increment. Also, the otolith shape showed a high variability between individuals, identifying four morphotypes. Morphotype 1 shows a more oval shape with a posterior zone clearly rounded; Morphotype 2 shows the posterior zone rounded, but the anterior end is more elongated; Morphotype 3 shows a completely different shape, elliptic-pentagonal and Morphotype 4 shows the posterior zone rounded, but the anterior end is more elongated and it is the pattern with antirostrum and rostrum more pointed and a deep notch. Therefore, the otolith shape exhibited a phenotypic plasticity that it was not associated with the metabolism of otolith growth. Whereas the otolith shape indicated a homogeneity in the sound perception through Amazon basin, the growth rates revealed an adaptive mechanism to environmental conditions or migratory process of this species.(AU)

ABSTRACT Near-infrared spectroscopy and microstructure of the scales of Sabethes (Sabethes) albiprivus (Diptera: Culicidae). Sabethes (Sabethes) albiprivus Theobald individuals vary considerably in size and color of the reflections of the scales on their thorax, abdomen, antepronotal lobes and occiput. The goal of this study was to investigate and to characterize the differences in the color of the scales among preserved specimens and to analyze the differences in the microstructures of the scales that cover their bodies using near-infrared spectroscopy, and to evaluate whether the latter is efficient in distinguishing the populations. A total of 201 adult females were analyzed for the characterization of color patterns. In addition, absorbance spectra and scanning electron microscope images were obtained from them. As a result of color analysis, two variations were identified, one represented by specimens with yellow or green scales and the other with blue or purple scales. The same two variations were corroborated using NIRS. Analysis of the microstructure of the scales lining the mesonotum, occiput and antepronotal lobes resulted in the same variations. The three methodologies, near-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and coloration of the reflections of the scales revealed two variations within Sa. albiprivus.

Résumé

This study investigated the morphological and dietary relationships of the fish assemblage in a stream with an endemic fauna and low species richness. The ichthyofauna was sampled quarterly from September 2011 to July 2012, through the electrofishing technique. The stomach contents of 419 individuals belonging to seven species were analyzed by the volumetric method, and the ecomorphological traits of 30 specimens of each species were estimated. The main food items consumed were detritus, aquatic and terrestrial insects, and other aquatic invertebrates. We observed low levels of trophic niche breadth and diet overlap between most species. The PCA scores indicated the occurrence of three ecomorphotypes. PCA axis 1 segregated at one extreme, species with dorsoventrally depressed bodies, longer caudal peduncles, and well-developed swimming fins; and at the other extreme, species with compressed bodies and peduncles, and relatively larger eyes and anal fins. PCA axis 2 segregated species with elongated bodies and ventrally oblique mouths. The partial Mantel test revealed a significant correlation between diet and morphology, indicating independence from the phylogeny. The patterns observed suggest that the low richness did not result in a broadening of the species' trophic niches, or in the absence of some of the main ecomorphotypes expected.

Bacterial vaginosis is a frequent disorder of the vaginal flora in reproductive-age women, characterized by the presence of a grey unpleasant smelling secretion, due to the decrease of lactobacilli, the vaginal Ph increase and the presence of anaerobic bacteria. It is estimated that around 30 % of women aged 14-49 years have bacterial vaginosis. It is associated with perinatologic diseases including: premature membrane breaking, premature birth, low-weight newborns and inflammatory pelvic disease. The bacterial vaginosis diagnosis could be made applying clinical criteria (Amsel criteria) or by evaluation of the bacterial morphotypes found in the vaginal secretion gram through microbiological procedures created as an alternative to the clinical diagnosis that gradually replaced it. The firstly described and standardized microbiological methods were the Spiegel's and Nugent's ones. Later, Ison and Hay widened Nugent's evaluation system, including two new categories respectively, emphasizing the dominance of gram positive cocci in the vaginal ecosystem and the absence of bacteria in a smear. The most recent study on the theme is the validation of the study Vaginal Content Balance (VACOBA), showing that Nugent's and Amsel's criteria integration increases the test sensibility and specificity.

Résumé

Brycon pesu is a small-sized fish distributed throughout the Amazon and Orinoco Basins and other coastal basins of northeastern South America. Brycon cf. pesu specimens from the Araguaia-Tocantins Basin are currently separated into two morphotypes, Brycon sp1 and Brycon sp2, owing to different coloration of their anal fin. Brycon sp2 has a reddish margin stripe on the anal fin which morphologically distinguishes it from Brycon sp1. In the present research, nuclear and mitochondrial markers were used to test the hypothesis that the Brycon sp1 and Brycon sp2 morphotypes are distinct species. Specimens from the two morphotypes were collected from the Lajeado Hydroelectric Plant and the Palmas River in the Araguaia-Tocantins Basin. Thirty-five loci obtained by the amplification of five inter-simple sequence repeat primers were analyzed but no species-specific bands were detected. Electrophoretic profiles obtained from 5S rDNA non-transcribed spacer amplification failed to show any differentiation in morphotypes. These results were corroborated by nucleotide sequence analysis of the mtDNA control region, in which 24 polymorphic nucleotide sites, representing a polymorphism rate of only 5%, were detected. The low rates of polymorphism detected by inter-simple sequence repeat, non-transcribed spacer and mtDNA D-loop markers strongly reject the hypothesis that the two morphotypes Brycon sp1 and Brycon sp2 represent distinct species within Brycon cf. pesu. Further studies are needed to obtain conclusive data on the notion that the coloration of the anal fin is an intraspecific polymorphism, possibly related to environmental factors.

Résumé

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of subgingival bacterial compositions between periodontally healthy and diseased sites. Subgingival plaque samples were obtained from 100 sites in 20 untreated adult periodontitis patients(experimental group), and 100 sites in healthy individuals(control group). Before sampling, probing pocket depth(PPD) and clinical level of attachment(CAL), Plaque Index(PI), and Sulcus Bleeding Index(SBI) were recorded for each sampled sites. Microbial samples were collected from the bases of gingival sulci or periodontal pockets with sterile curettes. The samples were examined under darkfield microscope(x400). At least 150 bacteria were evaluated and categorized on the basis of bacterial morphology and motility, i.e. cocci, non-motile rods, motile rods, and spirochetes. In control group, subgingival microbial flora consisted of 73.7% of cocci, 20.0% of non-motile rods, 4.3% of motile rods, and 2.0% of spirochetes. The microbial samples from experimental group consisted of 51.5% of cocci, 19.4% of non-motile rods, 17.6% of motile rods, and 11.6% of spirochetes. The proportion of cocci was higher in control group than in experimental group. Proportions of motile rods and spirochetes were higher in experimental group than in control group. The proportion of nonmotile rods in experimental group and control group was not significantly different. Sulcus Bleeding Index and Plaque Index showed high correlation with the bacterial composition. These findings suggests that examination of subgingival bacterial proportion may serve as more sensitive mirror of the local periodontal status than clinical parameters.
